Kris (Japanese:クリスKris) isFire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem'sAvatar unit. Kris is the first avatar unit in theFire Emblem series. Kris is one of the game's two protagonists.

Kris is customized by the player upon start of a new file, and is first playable in Prologue 1 ofNew Mystery of the Emblem. Kris seeks to serveMarth andAltea.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Creation and customization

The player will get to choose their class, name, and gender. Kris's name is limited to five characters. The available starting classes arecavalier,archer, andmage for either gender. Only males can bemercenaries,knights, andfighters, while only females can bemyrmidons andpegasus knights.

The player also gets to customize the appearance of the unit, being able to choose one of twelve hair styles, ten hair colors, and ten eye styles. A few additional styles will be unlocked throughout the game.

In addition, the player can choose Kris's fortune, which affects their starting stats and growth rates. The player must choose a past, a present, and a future, and cannot choose two fortunes that affect the same stat. The available fortunes are as follows:

Kris grew up in a small, mountainside village in Altea known as Sera. They were a childhood friend ofNorne. After theWar of Shadows concluded, Kris came to Altea Castle to become a knight. They join the 7th Platoon alongsideKatarina (who is later revealed to be an assassin tasked with infiltrating the ranks of the Altean knights),Luke,Roderick, andRyan. As a student, Kris is mentored byJagen,Frey, andCain among others. Kris became a trusted ally and friend ofMarth, assisting him throughout theWar of Heroes.

Analysis

Kris is often considered the best unit inNew Mystery of the Emblem. They are the only unit with perfect availability, from the first Prologue map until the endgame. Their base stats and growths vary depending on player choice in the character creation menu, but they will always be above-average. These factors ensure Kris maintains a sizable experience and statistical lead over your other units throughout most of the game. Kris can excel in either physical or magical classes, entirely up to the player's preference. This versatility is one of their most significant selling points.

Some of the most common choices for Kris' first class include:Armor Knight, the durability of which helps clear early chapters, andFighter, because of its offensive prowess letting Kris kill Prologue enemies the most efficiently and its high HP and low defense letting them bait enemies into attacking him while letting him take hits well. After prologue, Male Kris commonly reclasses to a Pirate to train up his axe rank and utilize that class's good strength and speed. That said, they can make use of every class exceptionally well. They can be the player's first flying unit or their first mage, depending on the player's desires.

On higher difficulty levels,New Mystery of the Emblem requires intense reclassing to beat, especially in the later chapters. There are many thresholds the player units must meet to fight enemies well. As one of the most flexible units at the player's disposal, Kris is also one of the best at filling necessary niches. If the player needs a fast unit to double enemies, Kris can become aSwordmaster; if the player needs good 2-range combat, they can be reclassed intoSniper. There are countless situations when reclassing is necessary. Since Kris can excel in almost any class, they are among the most valuable units on higher difficulty levels.

It should be noted that Kris's potential increases once the player beatsNew Mystery on Hard Mode or above. If the player has done this in a past run, male units can reclass between classes from both male unit class sets. This arguably makes male Kris generally to female Kris since he can access more classes before and after promotion, most notably axe-wielding classes which make him one of the few units who can effectively utilizeBerserker and its great caps. That said, female Kris compensates in other areas. Female Kris can accessPegasus Knight before promoting and can use theLady Sword in the early game. She can also promote toFalcon Knight with theElysian Whip.

Overall, Kris' main advantages are good base stats, superb growth rates, and incredible flexibility. Since all three of those aspects are valuable inNew Mystery of the Emblem, especially when playing on higher difficulty levels, Kris is indepensable in any playthrough, and one the strongest units in the series.

Trivia

• Kris is one of only two characters to have an item named for them inAwakening—in this case,Kris's Confect, using Kris's default name—who does not themself appear as aSpotPass or DLC character. The other character in this situation isOsian.
  • However, portraits of the male Kris do feature in the game's data alongside those of the various other SpotPass characters featured inAwakening^[1] (albeit without the brown background shared by the other portraits), possibly suggesting that he was planned to be featured, but was dropped for yet unknown reasons.
• Kris is the only main character in the series to lack a unique or semi-unique class. They are also one of only four main characters to lack a personal weapon, the others beingCelica as she appears inFire Emblem Gaiden,Robin, andShez.
