Kotaro (Japanese:コタロウKotaro) is an antagonist inFire Emblem Fates. He is the daimyo ofMokushu, famed for itsninja, and schemes to expand his holdings, resulting in his siding withGaron ofNohr; he is fought in each route.
Biography
Prior to the events ofFates, Kotaro was involved in the destruction of the Kingdom ofKohga, home to another ninja clan of whichShura was a member; and the killing ofSaizo andKaze's father.
Prior to being seen in any route, Kotaro allies with Nohr, seeking to expand Mokushu's territory by taking that of Hoshido.
Birthright
Kotaro is seen inChapter 10, where Corrin's army—ignorant of Mokushu's alliance with Nohr—passes through Mokushu and are ambushed by Kotaro. Kotaro expects Garon will reward him well for killing Corrin, but is himself defeated and killed in the ensuing battle.
Conquest
Kotaro is seen inChapter 17. Kotaro meets Corrin's army when they arrive in Mokushu to aid them against Hoshido. As they clear out Hoshidans, Corrin encounters Saizo, who explains Kotaro's dishonorable actions, including usingKagero as a hostage. Corrin is convinced and confronts Kotaro; when Corrin refuses to permit such action, Kotaro elects to kill Corrin's army, though he is himself killed in the ensuing battle.
Revelation
Kotaro is seen inChapter 11. Kagero passes through Mokushu, believing it to be Hoshido's ally, to deliver a message from Ryoma, but is captured by Kotaro; he explains to her his ambition of taking over Hoshido by aiding Garon. Saizo leads a mission to rescue Kagero and establishes a signal to warn off nearby allies, but Corrin notices this signal and moves their army to his aid. Saizo's team joins Corrin's army, and Kotaro is killed in the ensuing battle.
Fire Emblem Fates
Role
Kotaro is a recurring boss character inFire Emblem Fates; he is a minor antagonist in all three routes.

Kotaro is a cunning and ambitious opportunist, allying himself and the Mokushujin to Nohr so that King Garon can grant them considerable Hoshidan territory. He is not above using underhanded tactics. DuringConquest Chapter 17, he took Kagero as a hostage in order to make the Hoshidan army surrender and tricked Corrin and the Nohrian army into a deadly trap under the pretext of his army being depleted fighting the Hoshidans.
