— Kempf

Kempf (pronounced /kɛmf/[key][2]; Japanese:ケンプフKempf) is aboss and antagonist appearing inFire Emblem: Thracia 776. He has a burning hatred and jealousy forReinhardt and, by extension, his sisterOlwen. He is a noble ofFriege and serves theGrannvale empire in combat and by assisting with thechild hunts.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Kempf is first mentioned inChapter 10; he is discussed byLargo andOlwen as a petty commander who sends people he doesn't like, likeOlwen, on menial tasks, like making daily reports on a remote fortress unlikely to be attacked.[3]

DuringChapter 11 after the fortress in Nowell Valley ended up being attacked Kempf pays it no mind; he uses the excuse thatOlwen did not gather enough data on the attackers to warrant risking the possibility that it is a trap. He also tells Olwen that generalLargo, the man defending the fortress, is disposable due to his old age.[4]

Olwen is upset at Kempf's dismissal of Largo, but Kempf cuts her off, threatening her with charges of insubordination.[5] Regardless the altercation escalates after Kempf insults Olwen and tells her that all she can do is "go crying to big brother Reinhardt".[6] Olwen does not directly retaliate until Kempf insults Reinhardt directly,[7] to which Olwen draws her weapon. Kempf is not particularly intimidated and has his nearby guards imprison her in the dungeons for attacking a superior.Fred, a knight seen accompanying Olwen often, confronts Kempf for instigating the fight and Kempf laughs it off and orders him to head the defense force, telling him if he fights to the death Olwen may yet live.[8]

Upon spotting theLeonster army arriving to assault the Fort Dandrum, he orders the plan "Portcullis" to be executed, in which the enemy is trapped in a corridor while arrows from ballistae hail down on them. When Leonster's forces eventually break through the choke point Kempf flees immediately after being attacked.

Kempf is seen retreating inChapter 11x to report the fall of Dandrum fortress. He ordersOltoph, one of his subordinates working in the prison under the fortress, to stay behind and fight to the death to buy him more time to retreat. Kempf specifically orders the tactic "Murder Holes", which involves trapping two people in a room together to fight to the death. Additionally, Kempf orders that the prisoners present be executed, citing that they would be a nuisance if they were to escape.[9]

Later, having rejoined with Friege's army at Fort Norden, duringChapter 16A Kempf prepares to defend the fortress againstLeonster's forces. Shortly before the battle he is chastised byNikalaf for his cowardice, and is ordered to guard the bridge leading to the fortress and to not leave the cover of their ballistae until reinforcements fromUlster arrive. He disobeys these orders since he wants the credit to go to himself and not Ulster,[10] and orders his troops to attack and leave no one alive. His disobedience earns him a defeat at the hands ofLeif's forces.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Main article:Kempf/Heroes

There is one variation of Kempf available inHeroes.

Personality

Kempf is petty and cowardly; he has no reservations of fleeing Fort Dandrum whenLeonster's forces break through. Kempf inherited his position in theFriege army; and is not a leader to be looked up to due to these qualities.[11] Kempf also has little discipline and will ignore orders from his superiors if he thinks it will further his reputation.[10]

Possibly due to becoming generals at roughly the same time and at the same age, Kempf considersReinhardt something of a rival. Much to Kempf's anger, Reinhardt however does not see a rival relationship between them and appears to pay Kempf little to no mind.[12] Kempf uses Olwen, Reinhardt's younger sister, as an outlet for his frustration with Reinhardt; he often sends her on daily missions to the nearby fortress inNowell Valley, which apparently had seen little conflict beforeLeif attacked it.[3] Either way, Kempf does not seek an honorable rivalry with Reinhardt and attempts underhanded tactics, like framing his sisterOlwen for treason, to damage Reinhardt's reputation.[13]

Trivia

"In America!", a strange addition by theShayafan translation.
  • In theShaya fan translation ofThracia 776, Kempf declares "In America!" upon the execution of Portcullis. This is likely a reference to episode 12 ofYu-Gi-Oh!: The Abridged Series, in which the character Bandit Keith, who is known for his extreme American patriotism, says a similar line.

Kempf: You say the fort was attacked, but who exactly are the invaders? What was your mission, Olwen? Surveillance, wasn't it? You fail to even identify the enemy, and then you come running back demanding for reinforcements? I think not.
Olwen: We were caught off-guard, so we need more men! I decided to come back and report first...
Kempf: But what if this enemy that you speak of is merely a trap to lure us away from our post? Our 12 Legions are what make Dandrum the impregnable fortress that it is. There is no way I will send out troops without even knowing who the enemy is.
Olwen: But...what about General Largo! He is out there fighting as we speak...!
Kempf: An aged general or two is no big loss to our army. He would have died some time soon anyway. Now I don't have to worry about it.

Olwen: Are you insulting my brother?! You...!
Kempf: Drawing your sword, are you? What are you going to do, kill me? Stupid bitch. Guards! Throw General Olwen into the dungeon. Her charges are disobedience and turning her blade to her superiors!
    " — Kempf andOlwen,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
  8. "Kempf: Hm? What's the matter, Fred? Is something wrong?
Fred: You know what's wrong! What did Lady Olwen do? Punishing troops for personal reasons goes against military laws. Please release her immediately, or else I will take this matter to Queen Ishtar!
Kempf: Personal reasons? Why, I never. General Olwen drew her blade right here, to kill me.
Fred: What? No... That can't be...
Kempf: What did our military code say about turning your blade to your superiors? I recall it meant death, or some other severe punishment...
Fred: ...So is that your plan. ...Dirty schemer...
Kempf: Anyway, you will have to take responsibility for your commander's misbehavior. I order you to go out and meet the enemy. But this is a punishment. Fight to your death. If you dare retreat, Olwen will die. Understood?
    Fred: Kempf! ...You shameless bastard!

Kempf: Of course, General Nikalaf. They call themselves a Liberation Army, but their strength is but that of simple brigands. I shall take them down with my legion with ease.
Nicaraf: With ease, you say? Don't give me that nonsense, boy! Who was it who shamefully abandoned his troops and fled from Fort Dandrum? That was you, Kempf! Now listen to me. We are up against Leonster's Lanceritter forces. With Prince Leif leading them and their homeland in front of them, their morale is as high as the midday sun. You will die if you take them lightly!
    Kempf: Yes... I'm sorry...
Nikalaf: You will stay here and defend the bridge. The ballistae will cover you from the rear lines. Do not fight outside their range. This is an order!
    Kempf: Yes...
Nicaraf: We will start our offense when the reinforcements from Ulster arrive. We will charge the enemy from front and rear and crush them in one quick stroke.
    Kempf: Reinforcements from Ulster?
Nikalaf: Yes. Count Conomore will bring about 100 of his knights. The enemy will suffer a surprise attack from behind by the strongest army in Northern Thracia.
Kempf: I see... ...But then the credit won't be mine... I need to defeat them on my own...
    " — Kempf andNikalaf,Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Olwen: General Kempf thinks my brother is his rival.
Largo: ...Well, they are about the same age, and were both made generals rather young. I understand how he feels, but...
Olwen: But my brother doesn't think of him as a rival at all...
