Kaze
| ||||||||||||||||
|
| “ | Though I have served the royal family for some time, I serve no single master. I've always been troubled by this fact, but perhaps LadyMikoto arranged it... so that someday, when the time was right, I could serve you, Lord/Lady Corrin. If you will have me, then I will pledge myself to you. | ” | — Kaze, swearing his loyalty toCorrin. |
|---|
Kaze (Japanese:スズカゼSuzukaze) is a character inFire Emblem Fates. He is a ninja in the service ofRyoma. Unlike his brother, he accompaniesCorrin regardless of their decision. He is calm and polite.
Biography
Kaze and his older twin brother, Saizo, are members of a ninja clan from Igasato that has proudly served the Hoshidan royal family for several generations. Trained from a young age, Kaze became an exemplary ninja.
Before the decision
Kaze was trained in the way of the ninja from a very young age. WhenSumeragi attempted to parley withGaron by the latter's suggestion, he was attacked by Nohrian soldiers and later killed by Garon. Since then Kaze has regretted that he never went with his gut instincts that told him something was amiss. In a support conversation withCorrin, he admitted to that regret as well as apologized for being the cause of Corrin being separated from their family.
Kaze is first seen early in the game as a prisoner captured by Nohrian soldiers. Along withRinkah, Kaze was forced to battle against Corrin. Corrin would then stand against Garon to spare them, butLeo knocks Kaze and Rinkah out whileXander orders them to flee before Garon found out. Later, Kaze is seen again when Rinkah captures Corrin, where he promptly calls them "prince/princess Corrin" before guiding them to the capital of Hoshido. Kaze assists the other Hoshidans in fending offinvisible soldiers attacking Hoshido.
Birthright
Kaze follows Corrin through series of battles after their decision to side with Hoshido. He is seen guiding them to the Wind Tribe where they are attacked byFaceless monsters, to which both dispatch. After finding out it was a trick byIago, the group fights against the Wind Tribe and meets up with the leader of the Wind Tribe,Fuga.
InChapter 15, Kaze and Corrin defeat theWolfskin tribe. After the battle, the ground splits open and Corrin falls into the hole, only to be saved by Kaze. If Corrin has an A support with Kaze, he will strike an explosive gem found in the chasm which propels the two to safety. If Corrin does not have an A support with Kaze, he will confess his regrets about failing to stop Corrin's kidnapping and throw Corrin toHinoka before falling to his death.
Conquest
Kaze initially abandons Corrin after their decision to side with Nohr. He is next seen defending the Rainbow Sage in Notre Sagesse under the command of Hinoka inChapter 11. After the battle, he overhears Corrin discussing their plans to save both Hoshido and Nohr. Swayed by their earnest desire for peace, Kaze defects to Corrin's side. Unlike his fate inBirthright, Kaze will have no story plot that involves in his eventual demise.
The westernmost chest inChapter 26 is subject to an intriguing oddity related to Kaze's weapon level. If Kaze's shuriken rank is B or higher, the chest will yield aSpy's Shuriken. If it is still his base rank of C, it will yield aSpy's Yumi instead.
Revelation
Corrin refuses to side with either Hoshido or Nohr and is forced to go into hiding. Kaze reappears at the conclusion ofChapter 8 after convincingSaizo not to commit suicide in order to eliminate Corrin and he, along withSakura, decides to join Corrin's cause to take down Anankos. He rejoins with the same stats he had at the conclusion of Chapter 5 before the route split.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Kaze is one of the few units—along withCorrin,Silas, and recruitable bosses in paralogues—that is available on all three routes. His standout trait in his stat lineup is his speed, having a massive 85% growth, allowing him to easily outspeed enemies. His skill and resistance are also very good at 65% and 50% respectively. His only poor stats are luck and defense, having low growths of 20% and 25%, and having low bases. His low defense growth also isn't helped by his lower HP stat, but it has a 60% growth, letting him have a chance to fix his bulk better. His strength is not super high at 45%, but his high speed allows him to double easily.
InBirthright, Kaze joins at level 3 in Chapter 4 with serviceable bases and a D in shurikens, letting him use theIron Shuriken in his inventory, and the armor effectiveSting Shuriken to better chew throughKnight-tree enemies. InConquest, he starts at level 9, meaning he is one level away from a massive boost from promotion, and joins in Chapter 12. His bases are increased by a decent amount. He also gets a weapon rank boost to C for theSteel Shuriken in his inventory, as well as theHunter's Knife andKris Knife to deal effective damage. Finally, inRevelation, he joins in Chapter 9 with hisBirthright bases, but the only stat that is changed is an increase in strength by 4, and he loses theVulneraries he starts with beforeBranch of Fate.
Kaze starts with his personal skill,Miraculous Save, andLocktouch on all three routes. Miraculous Save gives a luck percent chance to save the units he is supporting when paired up or in a tag team from being killed. While his luck stat is garbage, the skill procs off the unit that is being supported, meaning that if the unit being supported has a high luck stat, it will activate more often. Locktouch allows him to open chests and doors for free, giving some niche use cases. At a level 10 Ninja, he getsPoison Strike, which allows non-lethal chip damage after combat ends, which helps with his potential damage issues.
For his main class tree, he can promote toMaster Ninja orMechanist. Master Ninja exemplifies what Ninja units are good at by giving more points of skill, speed, and resistance, as well as increasing his resistance growth. It also gives innate bonuses of +5 hit, crit, avoid, and dodge. The sword access isn't too special at first since he'll have to build it to gain access to more useful weapons like theArmorslayer,Wyrmslayer, andAxe Splitter. They're also mostly going to be useful to gain weapon triangle advantage against axe users who can quite easily kill him.Lethality is powerful by instantly killing non-boss foes, but the proc rate is very unreliable.Shurikenfaire is significantly better by adding guaranteed damage rather than killing at a low chance. The other promotion of Mechanist fixes some of the stats he's worse in by giving more points of HP, strength, and defense. The additional point of movement over Master Ninja allows him to keep pace with other units better. He also gains high powered yumi to fix potential damage issues. His HP, strength, and luck growths are also increased slightly. Mechanist's first skill ofGolembane will only has niche uses sinceAutomaton,Stoneborn, and other Mechanists aren't very common. The second skill ofReplicate has very good utility by providing a clone for additional support, although both Kaze and his clone share a health bar, so keep that in mind when positioning them.
His other class choice is theSamurai class tree, which reduces his skill in exchange for increased HP and luck. He also gains a damage increase through the +1 strength reclassing andBrass Katanas andBronze Swords being stronger than Iron Shurikens. Kaze also gains increases to his HP, strength, and luck growths, and reductions to his skill, defense, and resistance. However, this class takes away Kaze's biggest utility in shuriken debuffs, putting the practicality of reclassing into the spotlight. The skill access is decent, although he may be better off waiting for it.Duelist's Blow is great for a high amount of extra avoid on player phase.Vantage allows Kaze to strike first if he's at 50% HP or below, but since he can struggle to actually kill units that aren't pre-weakened, he is pretty susceptible to dying, making Vantage strats require a lot of setup. The two promotions are both decent in their own rights.Swordmaster loses a hit and dodge bonus compared to Master Ninja, but has higher crit and avoid bonuses, and decent stats compared to Kaze's main promotion options. Swordmaster's growths are the exact same as Samurai except for a slight increase to magic. The skill ofAstra is very useful, since if all five half damage attacks hit, they do more damage than two attacks at full damage, and it will proc more often with Kaze's high skill and growth. The other skill ofSwordfaire is also great, but only if he remains in a sword-wielding class, which is decently likely. The other promotion ofMaster of Arms is great on the virtue of its full weapon triangle control. This class is good to increase Kaze's bulk since it has the highest HP and defense base compared to all the other classes he can access at base, as well as having high strength and good speed. Growthwise, Master of Arms offers the highest growths in HP, strength, and defense, as well as increasing his luck to be better than Master Ninja and Mechanist, but it reduces his resistance by a lot. The first skill ofSeal Strength is nice to cripple certain enemies, andLife and Death is great to better reach one-shot thresholds on dangerous enemies, though it should be used with caution since enemies also gain extra damage to the user of the skill.
