Katarina (Japanese:カタリナKatarina) is a tactician and mage in the service ofAltea. Formerly one ofEremiya's assassins under the nameReese (Japanese:アイネEine), she was originally tasked with infiltrating the Altean knights to assassinateMarth, but instead came to befriend and care for her fellow Altean recruits. Though she fled Altea after her attempt on Marth's life failed and her true identity as an assassin revealed to all, she was later persuaded to leave Eremiya's service byKris.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

Katarina appears throughoutNew Mystery of the Emblem as a major character. She is first a major NPC in the Prologue chapters as a member of the 7th Platoon and Kris's friend. However, inPrologue 8, she reveals herself to be an assassin working withClarisse andLegion underEremiya, attempting to kill Marth: she is fought as the boss of this chapter. She appears in a cutscene at the end ofChapter 13x, where she attempts to save Clarisse from her wounds: however, Eremiya refuses to allow her to do so, and Clarisse dies.

She appears as the boss ofChapter 16x, and can be recruited if Kris talks to her three times in succession. After this, she joins Marth's army for the remainder of the game.

Katarina also appears as a playable character in the bonus episodeThree Assassins, set before the events of the main game.

As with a number of other characters inNew Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Katarina available throughEveryone's Conditions:Reese's Tome.

Growth rates when reclassed

Analysis

Katarina joins late into the game, but compensates in many ways. She joins as aSage, a promoted class, so she can reclass into any promoted class available for females. Her weapon ranks are incredible; B-rank tomes is very high, and C-rank staves is also useful. She can usePhysic staves at base, so she may contribute as a support unit. She is also a solid combat unit, because B-rank tomes is enough forNosferatu andAura.

To reach her full potential, Katarina needs some investment. Katarina does not excel as a combat unit unless the player gives her severalSpeedwings. Otherwise, she has doubling issues, and while her base stats are good, she will not one-round.

If she does receive two or more Speedwings, Katarina becomes excellent at fighting. WithNosferatu, she can fight on enemy phase despite her frailty. Enemy resistance tends to be lower than defense, letting Katarina deal high damage. Even in higher difficulties, she can face many enemies and one-round them. On player phase, Katarina can nuke foes withAura or useCutting Gale to debilitate fliers. To double faster enemies, Katarina can reclass intoSwordmaster. As a swordmaster, Katarina can use theLevin Sword. She is a good user of it thanks to her good base magic of 7. The player can also give Katarina a fewSpirit Dusts to maximize her offense.

Even when she is not fighting, Katarina can contribute with staves. C-rank is enough for Physic andWarp. If she reaches B-rank, she also gains access toRecover andAgain. Should the player not want to use her as a combat unit, she can stay back and heal allies.

Katarina underperforms in physical classes, because her personal stats are magic-oriented. Her best classes also tend to have low defenses, making Katarina frail. That said, she can circumvent her low durability in a few ways. She can useNosferatu as aSage to heal herself by dealing damage, as long as she can counter. Katarina is also a good user ofSeraph Robes, especially if the player intends to make her fight on enemy phase.

Used to her full potential, Katarina can trivialize parts ofNew Mystery. Even in high difficulties, her ability to enemy-phase withNosferatu is remarkable. She is a support and combat unit in one, and among the best users of investment in the game. Her only competition isLinde, who has an availability lead and can also useAura. That said, Katarina's personal bases and initial weapon ranks are superior.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

Two versions of Katarina are playable as bonus characters: aSpotPass version, released with theNew Mystery of the Emblem character set, and aDLC version as part of theApotheosis DLC package, the final DLC character released.

Katarina appears as an ally unit in the DLC chapterLost Bloodlines 1 and as an enemy unit in the DLC chaptersLost Bloodlines 2 and3 andRogues & Redeemers 1,2, and3, serving as the boss ofRogues & Redeemers 2.

Katarina: Wayward One
Katarina is a trainee tactician who belongs to the 7th Platoon of Altea's royal knights.	When she took the Altean knights' recruitment test, Katarina teamed up with Kris, and passed with flying colors. The two were then assigned to the 7th Platoon.	Kris was made the leader of the platoon, with Katarina serving as its tactician-in-training. They continued to perform as a fantastic team, and were victorious in a number of battles!	However, Katarina has a big secret that she hasn't revealed even to Kris—or so I hear. I wonder what it could be!

Don't tell anyone, but they're going undercover to infiltrate a festival, and that's why she's wearing Plegian-style attire!	Plegia is infamous for the baking sands of its deserts, and perhaps that's why Plegian clothing tends to…leave little to the imagination. Katarina might need some time to get used to the look, but I think she's blending right in!	Incidentally, I hear that torch she's carrying has a special power. They say that Plegian magic is all about hexes and curses, so I'm curious about what that torch can do!	Katarina and Kris might be working undercover for a mission, but I don't think there's any problem with them enjoying the festival while they're at it, do you? In fact, I'd say that's the best way for them to hide in plain sight!

• Katarina is the only character to have two different character-based weapons named after her:Reese's Tome inNew Mystery of the Emblem, andKatarina's Bolt inAwakening. However, their localized names position the tomes as being based on her two different identities, as opposed to both being based on a single alias.
