Jeralt Reus Eisner[3] (pronounced /'d͡ʒɛɹəlt 'aɪznɚ/[key]; Japanese:ジェラルトJeralt) is a character appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. He was once a legendary knight ofSeiros,[4] but is now captain of a mercenary troop and the father ofByleth.
Biography
In roughly 881, likely during the Crescent Moon War betweenFaerghus andLeicester, Jeralt was a mercenary assisting theKnights of Seiros when he was mortally wounded protectingRhea.[1] Rhea saved his life with a transfusion of herCrest-bearing blood, granting him the Crest of Seiros and a significantly enhanced lifespan. Afterwards, Jeralt accepted a post as a Knight of Seiros.[5]
Jeralt served as knight-captain for hundreds of years, deploying all acrossFódlan for the Knights of Seiros. In 1146, during one of these missions, he appointed an orphan,Alois Rangeld, as his squire, due to his physical resemblance to a previous squire who died in a plague.[6] Eventually, Jeralt met and marriedSitri, and she became pregnant, giving birth on the 20th of the Horsebow Moon, 1159. Unknown to Jeralt, Sitri was an artificial human created by Rhea, and the birth was a dangerous one; the child was stillborn and Sitri was dying. At her request, Rhea removed Sitri'sCrest Stone to save the child,Byleth.[7] Jeralt was told only the surface details, that his young wife had died in childbirth. Despite her assurances, he soon grew suspicious and eventually fearful of Rhea, learning that the newborn never cried or laughed and had no heartbeat. On the 7th of the Wyvern Moon after, Jeralt took advantage of a fire to fake their deaths and flee the monastery.[8] Jeralt spent the next 20 years wanderingFódlan as a mercenary, raising Byleth in secret to avoid Rhea's scrutiny[9]. During a visit toLeicester in this period, he briefly taught a self-proclaimed apprentice from Sauin Village namedLeonie Pinelli. Jeralt was also part of a mission where Byleth faced and destroyedBerling's Mercenaries, leaving a youth namedShez as the sole survivor.[10]
In the Great Tree Moon of 1180, shortly before a mission toFaerghus, Jeralt and his mercenaries are approached by the noblesEdelgard von Hresvelg,Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd, andClaude von Riegan, who enlist his aid in driving off a group of bandits led byKostas. Afterwards, Alois discovers him and browbeats him into returning toGarreg Mach Monastery.[11] He reunites with Rhea and reluctantly agrees to return to the Knights of Seiros in an advisory capacity.[12] Over the next eight months, Jeralt goes on missions for the Knights of Seiros while Byleth accepts a post as a teacher at theOfficers Academy at the monastery. Jeralt directly accompanies Byleth on a mission to Remire Village and aids them in subduing the villagers, who have been driven homicidally insane by the dark bishopSolon. Afterwards, he and Byleth are confronted by theFlame Emperor, a masked individual who has been launching attacks on the Church; the Flame Emperor denies involvement in the Remire massacre, but Jeralt does not believe them and unsuccessfully attempts to arrest them.[13] The following month, Jeralt and Byleth are forced to slay several students who have been transformed intoDemonic Beasts. In the aftermath, the assassinKronya, disguised as a student namedMonica von Ochs, stabs and mortally wounds him. Byleth attempts to useDivine Pulse to save him, but is sabotaged by Kronya and Solon's masterThales, and Jeralt dies in their arms.[14]
InWarriors: Three Hopes, the three lords instead encounterShez while fleeing Kostas, changing the course of history. In this timeline, Jeralt and Byleth remain mercenaries, taking a long-term contract with the KingdomSB or EmpireAG, GW when the war erupts. Late in the war, Jeralt takes a lead role in a pivotal battle. If avoided or delayed with clever strategies, he eventually defects to Shez's army, alongside Byleth and Alois. If Jeralt is killed, Byleth killsRandolph,SBRodrigue,AG orJudithGW in retaliation. Afterwards, they abandon the mercenaries to Alois, and give their body toSothis to pursue vengeance against Shez.

On one fateful occasion, the band of mercenaries he belonged to fought alongside the Knights of Seiros. I was traveling with the knights at the time, and Jeralt jumped in front of an attack meant for me. He was gravely wounded. On the verge of death. I tended to his wounds in a desperate attempt to save his life. Thankfully, my efforts were not in vain. Jeralt managed to escape a seemingly certain death. I made arrangements for him to receive further care at Garreg Mach. Leonie: At that age, you must have had some real talent and courage to stand out as a future knight!
Alois: Oh, no, it wasn't that. I was just an orphan boy living in the monastery. I was a timid little thing.
Leonie: Really? He didn't choose you for your bravery? What made him choose you, then?
Alois: My face looked like the dead boy's." — Alois andLeonie in theirC support,Fire Emblem: Three Houses - ↑"I thought that I could regain all I had lost, if only I could revive my mother... And so I tried to bring her back by creating a body, and then burying a Crest Stone within it. A young woman I created... my twelfth try after much heartache... was a failure. She grew up lacking the conscience of the progenitor god and fell in love with the captain of the Knights of Seiros. In time, she became pregnant... but she and the child were not able to survive the birth. The child she bore was not breathing, and she herself was in grave danger. The new mother pleaded with me to take the Crest Stone of the progenitor god from her own body and place it within the baby. If I had done nothing, both mother and child would have died.
