Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Jean joins in the first paralogue inEngage with low bases and a low base level of 1 at a point in the game where most of your units are getting close to promotion level, as well as unimpressive growth rates in all areas, aside from a decent growth in speed. To compensate, Jean has the powerful personal skill,Expertise, which doubles the natural growth rate bonus added from his class growth bonuses. This significantly improves Jean's growth rates and lets him get considerably more use out of his level ups.

Due to his low base stats, Jean is ill equipped for combat when he joins and instead his main use is as the second healer in the army alongsideFramme, along with being able to perform aChain Guard thanks to his base class. However, unlike Framme, Jean doesn't come with a strong utility personal skill and isn't available for several chapters to get time to build up his levels before enemy bosses start to get promoted inchapter 7 and promoted generic enemies start to become more common inchapter 12.

Because of Jean's short time frame for self improvement his best option is to equip eitherCelica and get to bond level 10 for access to theRecover staff or to useMicaiah for staff utility andGreat Sacrifice. Jean's main problem is that other playable units in the earlygame make similar or better use of theseEmblem Rings and also desire experience to be able to compete with the enemies and strong prepromoted midgame playable units such asPandreo.

If Jean does manage to gain enough experience to get to promotion level, he can promote into aMartial Master orHigh Priest. Both classes significantly improve his combat due to the Martial master giving him additional strength and build, while the High Priest class utilizes Jean's proficiency in tomes. Jean can also easily reclass into any class due to his personal skill doubling class growth bonuses, with options such asMage Knight for strong combat orGriffin Knight for flying utility combined with still being able to utilize his high base rank in staves.

Overall, Jean can become a strong unit if given enough investment in the earlygame, but due to the strong prepromoted units that join the players army for 0 investment, the high experience requirement and reliance on Emblem Rings, the effort needed to train up Jean to a usable level is higher than the returns Jeans gives to the army upon becoming a strong unit.
