Jakob (Japanese:ジョーカーJoker) is a character inFire Emblem Fates. He is aButler who works underCorrin. He is unsociable with most people, but gets along with Corrin.

Biography

Jakob is a butler who serves Corrin in the Kingdom of Nohr. Although born into aristocracy, Jakob lost connections with both of his parents, a fact that, according to his supports with Azura, stems from them never loving him, never forging happy memories with him, and eventually abandoning him. Electing to follow Corrin regardless of the choice that they make, Jakob attributes this to the kindness and compassion that they displayed towards him when he was alienated during his induction into the service of the Nohrian royalty, keeping him around despite his initial blunders.

Analysis

Jakob is a level 1Butler joining inChapter 2 of all routes inFates ifCorrin is female. He leaves temporarily at the end ofChapter 3, but returns inChapter 6 of all three routes. Despite being in a promoted class, his base stats are not much higher than most other units you obtain at the start of each route. However, he gains experience as if he were unpromoted, allowing him to obtain skills from promoted classes much earlier than anyone else on top of having four built-inEternal Seals; these extra 20 levels help compensate for his lower stats. While this seems to make him a unit that can snowball with his stats, his somewhat average growths prevent his stats from spiraling out of control.

When Corrin is male, he joins in Chapter 15, but is markedly worse for combat. He is best off reclassing as soon as possible after obtaining the powerfulTomebreaker skill, which is only two levels away for him.

Jakob starts with only a handful of skills:Evasive Partner,Resistance +2 andGentilhomme. Evasive Partner, his personal skill, grants Corrin +15 avoid and −3 damage taken, which is useful when training them. Resistance +2 provides some additional magical bulk, and Gentilhomme reduces the damage incurred by female units in his vicinity by 2. While Gentilhomme andDemoiselle are superficially equivalent, the earlygame male units benefit more from the damage reduction of Demoiselle than the earlygame female units do from Gentilhomme.

If left inButler, Jakob makes a passable staffbot, though his healing will be worse thanFelicia's due to his lower magic. His higher strength makes him better at securing kills with daggers than Felicia, all while serving as a solid debuffer. Furthermore, Jakob learnsLive to Serve at level 5, which allows him to heal himself when using healing staves. The aforementioned Tomebreaker is particularly powerful on Jakob, granting him 50 hit and avoid when fighting tome-wielding enemies, significantly improving his matchup against them; this is particularly relevant if Jakob is reclassed into a class with lower resistance. He may add further options to his supportive toolkit by reclassing toStrategist and obtainingRally Resistance andInspiration; however, his base and growth in magic only increase slightly, and he is initially locked to the weak E-rankRat Spirits andFire tomes.

Jakob's middling magic means he is better off reclassing to theCavalier class tree, which capitalizes fully on his physical abilities.Paladin is a powerful class that provides balanced stats on top of 8 movement;Great Knight instead focuses more on HP, strength, and defense at the expense of speed, luck, and resistance, while still packing 7 movement. Jakob will benefit from the added strength in either class, as he starts at an E-rank in all weapon types without usingArms Scrolls. In any event, either class will provide Jakob with Cavalier's skills ofElbow Room andShelter within two levels. Elbow Room grants him 3 points of free damage on non-special tiles, rendering it universally useful; Shelter allows him to pull units into apair-up with him, thereby protecting them from harm. Paladin'sDefender increases all of Jakob's stats by 1 on top of pair-up bonuses when paired up; meanwhile,Aegis provides a chance at damage reduction, although this skill is somewhat unreliable. Great Knight comes withLuna as a potentially decent offensive skill to reduce the enemy's defense or resistance, although it suffers from the same reliability problems as Aegis; meanwhile,Armored Blow grants Jakob +10 defense when initiating combat, turning him into a physical player-phase tank.

As mentioned before, Jakob's ability to obtain extremely powerful skills such asLife and Death orTrample much earlier than other units can turn him into an earlygame juggernaut that will last well into the later stages of the game. If the player wishes to invest heavily into Jakob or turn him into a project unit, he can marry female Corrin before Chapter 10 of any route and gain access to the promoted version of Corrin's Talent class throughPartner Seals. Typically, this is done with theWyvern Rider Talent on Corrin, allowing Jakob access toMalig Knight orWyvern Lord very early on. If he is to marry Corrin for her class line, then he is ideally reclassed into Paladin during Chapters 7 through 10 for its solid combat stats. Bear in mind, though, that this will deprive many units of aHeart Seal who may particularly want one in the earlygame, such asElise,Mozu, orAzama.

Jakob's class pool fromFriendship Seals is not that large.Silas andGunter both grant him the option to use a Friendship Seal to become a Paladin or Great Knight; depending on when he is recruited, though, he is either perfectly fine to remain as a Butler for some time or joins later into the story, when reclass Seals might not be as contested. OnlyTakumi provides him with a completely new class line, that beingArcher.Skill +2,Quick Draw,Certain Blow, andAir Superiority are all solid skills that he can obtain from this tree.

Overall, Jakob can be a great unit if invested properly. While it should be noted that most units will also turn out very well in the short term stat-wise with a similar level of investment, what Jakob brings to the table is the ability to obtain very lucrative (and potentially rare) skills significantly earlier than other units. A similarly trained Silas or reclassed Wyvern Rider Elise can produce similar results in theConquest campaign without needing to marry Corrin, but that should not deter players from turning Jakob into a viable project unit with long-term potential.

Personality

Jakob is hardworking and exceptionally dedicated to Corrin. He is very kind, dutiful, and courteous only towards Corrin prior to supporting anyone. This part of him leads him into constant spats with other people about Corrin's wellbeing, most notable with Camilla, who too is very protective of Corrin. His dedication to Corrin tends to cloud his judgement and can sometimes get him in a very tight spot in order not disappoint Corrin, despite the fact they would not care.

Around other members of the army, Jakob is quite rude and doesn't curve his tongue around them. It is not uncommon to see him talking to others only to poke fun at them. This attitude is even shown with his son, Dwyer, who he sees as competition because he fears that Dwyer is a better butler than he. However, he will get over his dislike for his allies temporarily if ordered to work with them by Corrin. Despite that, he will still continue to be competitive, rather aggressively too, when it comes to work and things needing to be done.

Jakob is the one who would follow Corrin to the ends of the earth. He hates mornings the most out in the army.

Jakob: Devoted Servant
During Corrin’s childhood in Nohr, the young royal was served by a truly outstanding butler. He was sharp as a whip, skilled with daggers, and unfailingly loyal to his charge… Who wouldn’t want Jakob as a butler?	Jakob seems to do just about anything without much effort, but he actually struggled a great deal during his younger days. Though born to a prestigious family, he was made a servant at the royal castle, and it wasn’t an easy adjustment for him. At all.	Fortunately, both his master and his teacher were nothing short of ideal. With the help of Corrin’s kindness and Gunter’s strict instruction, Jakob grew into the perfect butler.	Jakob employs every trick of the trade that he’s learned in order to protect Corrin. I’d love to have a butler just like him watching my back!

We’ve got a particularly cool and composed Hero joining us at the harvest festival—it’s Jakob, Corrin’s butler, and he’s arrived dressed as a monster from another world!	This look was inspired by an artificial human who’s powered by lightning, with metal parts sticking out of his body that can absorb lightning and control his monstrous strength. I suppose the restraints are to keep him under control?	For this outing, Jakob’s armed with an enormous bow. I’m not sure how he manages to pull the “string,” but apparently it uses the power of lightning to fire arrows!	So that was Jakob’s monster outfit—he might be a cool and collected butler on the inside, but if Corrin winds up in trouble, those restraints won’t be able to stop him!
