Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

Imhullu (Japanese:マフーMafu) is atome introduced inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is the signature weapon ofGharnef, the Dark Pontifex and ally toMedeus, and its power prevents attacks from any weapon butStarlight.

History

There are two differing explanations given for Imhullu, one given inShadow Dragon and a differing one given inNew Mystery of the Emblem. The first is thatGotoh was the guardian of the tome, knowing its immense power could be used for evil; his pupilGharnef took the book and vanished.[1] The other is that Imhullu was first created by Gharnef, the future Dark Pontifex, during his tutelage under the White Sage Gotoh. Out of envy and wrath over Gotoh picking rival studentMiloah as the successor ofKhadein and theAura tome, Gharnef used theDarksphere, one of the gems adorning theBinding Shield, to create Imhullu. In the process of creating Imhullu, Gharnef's heart was sealed in the Darksphere, corrupting him.[2]

Much as the effects of the Darksphere itself can only be countered by theLightsphere, so too does Imhullu have a weakness toStarlight, a tome forged from the Lightsphere. One who wields Starlight can use its power to pierce the dark protection Imhullu bestows upon its wielder. To this end, Gotoh hadMarth gather the components to forge Starlight for use against Gharnef himself.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem OVA

InPrince of Aritia, the first episode ofFire Emblem, a flashback shows Gharnef using Imhullu in battle against theFalchion-wielding KingCornelius ofAltea, and with it easily kills Cornelius by piercing him through the stomach. The spell is depicted as a large number of glowing dark tendrils, each ending in what looks like a screaming human face, emerging from the Imhullu spellbook, which bombard the target before exploding.

Trivia

  • InChapter 23 ofShadow Dragon, the fake Gharnefs scattered across the map all wield fake copies of Imhullu; outside of battle, they display the same stats and description as the real Imhullu, but in battle they instead have the stats ofElfire and do not negate damage. Versions of this chapter in earlier games simply have the fake Gharnefs wield regular, undisguised tomes:Swarm inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, and Elfire inMystery of the Emblem Book 1.

  1. "Marth: Is Imhullu so powerful a magic, then?
Gotoh: Yes. The mage who wields it cannot be killed; cannot be so much as scratched. I was the magic's guardian once. Knowing its forbidden power could work terrible evils, so I kept it close. But Gharnef, one of my two pupils—Miloah being the other—took the forbidden tome and vanished. Now you are paying for my carelessness. Forgive me. I wish to make amends by teaching you the only way to undo Imhullu's power." —Marth andGotoh,Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
  2. "Gharnef, along with Pontifex Miloah, were Lord Gotoh's best pupils. But Lord Gotoh saw Gharnef's weakness, and so he left Khadein and the Aura tome to Pontifex Miloah. Gharnef, overcome by jealousy, stole the Darksphere from Lord Gotoh, and created the Imhullu tome. As a result... His heart was trapped within the Darksphere for all eternity. Wrath and envy led him to ruin." —Wendell,Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
