Briefly recapping one event from theprevious chapter, anarrator begins to explain the plight of aHoshidan prince and the few allies that he has gathered, the prince brooding over a recent defeat while his allies tended to their deep, non-mortal wounds; it is revealed that the prince's injuries had been inflicted by shadowy minions of a dragon.

We cut to what appears to be a Hoshidan-style forest, where five children run onto the scene;Shiro notices that the figures they were pursuing got away, to whichRhajat vows to curse the figures for a thousand years for causing her pain, whileMidori asks if anyone is hurt bad and offers herall-natural painkiller.Caeldori goes on to state that it may be for the best that their enemy fled, as the group might not have survived had they continued with a full-force assault, to which Shiro states he's not going to stand for being beaten in that fashion; as Shiro vows to do something when his wounds heal,Asugi assumes that Shiro is going to suggest that they run away, to which Shiro refutes. Asugi, noting the group's injuries, asks Shiro if his plan is for the others to die in his stead, after which Caeldori suggests that they all take a break to cool their heels—they were lucky to even meet up after escaping theirDeeprealms, and they've been fighting nonstop since and the fighting is taking its toll, with Midori adding in agreement that a break would give her remedies more time to work. The group then start to discuss the tactics of a previous battle, including statements of the involvement of a dragon, which blows up into a full-on argument between Shiro and Asugi; Caeldori attempts to quell the argument, to which Asugi states it's not his job to keep anyone safe—his father might have beenShiro's father's retainer, but he didn't inherit the position. As Shiro and Asugi continue to argue and Caeldori continues to attempt to stop them, Caeldori brings up that their homes had been taken from them in a coordinated ambush—and they need to know more about their enemy and why they've done what they did, and they can't be picking fights until they know this information. At this point, all except Asugi start to reveal that they were separated fromtheirrespectivefathers protecting them as they escaped their Deeprealms, with Shiro being given theRaijinto in the process in his case, with Asugi stating that his escape was easier but he never saw his father, with Shiro claiming Shiro's father called for Asugi's father to go help him; after these revelations, Rhajat suggests that they try to prove themselves once more now that the enemy no longer has the presence of a dragon on their side, having to reveal that the dragon's signature presence is now absent when Midori inquires, and suggests that the advantage might swing back their way without a rampaging dragon on the enemy's side. Caeldori states that she noticed something strange about the enemies with the dragon, as they acted less predictably than the enemies that stormed the Deeprealms, then suggest they take those enemies prisoner in order to find out the reasoning; Midori suggests that the enemies in question might also be tired out from the last fight and suggests that they might be able to win this time should they sneak up on them, to which Shiro then asks if everyone is ready. Midori states that if Shiro gives her a little more time, she can brew up some more medicine, and also wants to make sure Asugi is aboard with the plan before they go; Asugi states he's on board for his own reasons and not any of theirs, to which Shiro gives some words of wisdom before calling the group into action. After a shift of scene in what appears to be aNohrian-style forest, the battle begins.

Once the battle ends, Shiro vows revenge against theVallites left standing and is ready to close in on them when Asugi asks Shiro to hold his fire and states that he wouldn't count the Vallites out quite yet; Rhajat notes that these Vallites still mean to fight and the situation could turn unfortunate for one of them, with Caeldori suggesting that they stand down only for Shiro to rebuke the suggestion. Shiro moves forward despite Midori's protest, and as he prepares to take the offensive, Midori asks Shiro to watch himself, with Asugi leaping into the action to take a hit aimed at Shiro; Shiro asks Asugi why he leapt into action despite his misgivings, to which Asugi states he wouldn't hear the end of it from his father if he didn't attempt to protect Shiro, then suggests fleeing to which Shiro finally agrees, after which Caeldori notes that the Vallites are preparing to attack again. Right as the Vallites start to attack,Kana (the female one fromI: In Endless Dreams) and thenKiragi arrive on the scene and guard Caledori and Midori respectively, after whichMitama,Selkie, andHisame also arrive on the scene; Kiragi, noting the closeness of the situation, asks Shiro if he's OK, to which Shiro asks Kiragi what he's doing in the area, to which Kiragi asks Shiro to hold all questions until after everyone's escaped, and he knows a place to lay low, with Kana asking that they wait to judge until they've seen the location. Kana then asks Mitama if she could heal everyone once they've reached the location, to which Mitama agrees; Selkie appears disappointed that they're appearing to playtag and nothide-and-seek, with Hisame adding that they'll be facing those particular Vallites again and that they can save the games for then, to which Selkie agrees.

Cutting to a different part of the forest, Kiragi suggests that this area should be far enough away for them to be safe, with Caeldori noting that the enemy didn't give chase; after Mitama heals Asugi's and Shiro's wounds and gets thanked for the job, Kana then introduces herself, Hisame, Selkie, and Mitama to Shiro and his group and asks Shiro if he already knew Kiragi, with Shiro confirming Kiragi is his cousin and then introduces himself and the rest of his group to Kana and her group. As Selkie and Caeldori state that some of each of the others' groups appear to be familiar to them but not others, the combined group then start to talk about just who appears to be familiar with others, Rhajat in particular claiming they're all strangers, after which Shiro asks Kiragi where his group came from; Kiragi states that his group heard a horrible roaring sound and came to check it out not expecting to run into Shiro's group, then reveals that something happened tohis parents, with Shiro asking if his uncle is OK. After brief talk about their similar backstories, the group then talks some more about the Vallite adversaries; upon Selkie stating that the ones her group was fighting got away, she then brings up the ghostly lady that came to them, with Midori asking if she introduced herself with Kana denying but also stating that the ghost gave her adragonstone. Kana then brings up that the ghost asked if the Vallites they faced appeared weird and deduces that that might have been her way of implying that they were human; the group then vows to find out the mysteries surrounding them together.

At this point, the Raijinto begins glowing to Shiro's notice, after which Kiragi states that the same thing also happened with theFujin Yumi, followed by Kana stating that theYato has also started glowing again; at this point, the Noble Yato transforms into the Blazing Yato, to which Shiro notices the change with Kana introducing the name of the Yato's new form. Shiro asks Kana if she made the name up on the spot, to which Kana states the ghost told her this transformation would happen, and that the Yato's changed a lot since she got it fromher father; Kiragi then tells Shiro he should have seen the Yato before it reacted with the Fujin Yumi, Shiro notes the Blazing Yato is an aptly-named weapon that should blaze a trail right through their enemy. Kana states that she can't wait to save her father, after which Shiro states that that their group has the advantage now, and this time it's for keeps.

We cut to another area, where Shigure, the narrator from earlier, sings the third verse ofLost in Thoughts All Alone, stating it to be a song for one who haschosen the difficult path between two chasms; an offscreen voice tells Shigure that, in this particular case, that path was broken andnever came to its proper end, before appearing as the ghost ofAzura. Shigure states he knows what happened and notes that's why Azura spared him, after which Azura states that her time is almost up, apologizng for having to send Shigure down the one path she never wished for him, but wishes to teach him the rest of the song before she leaves; Shigure asks if there's really more to the song, to which Azura states that she failed to use the song's full potential when she sang—there is a fourth verse that holds tremendous, dangerous power, and Azura deduces that she's still here so she can teach Shigure that verse. Azura then asks Shigure if he remembers when she told him he could use the pendant the same way she could, to which Shigure confirms but also states that she warned him to never do so; Azura notes that there's no other way now and that he has more potential within than she ever did, and that the power flowing through him is equal to the ancient kings of Valla, to which Shigure states Azura never told him much of them. Azura starts to talk about the ancient kings of Valla, with the first king,Cadros, is mentioned in particular as being a close friend ofthe dragon and that Shigure is said to have much in common with him; as Shigure and Azura continue talking about the song and their eventual parting, Azura wraps things up by singing the first part of the fourth verse of Lost in Thoughts All Alone.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

This chapter sees a sharp uptick in difficulty compared to the previous two due to the lack of a healer, with the player having to rely on limited healing options, beingMidori'sConcoction andAzura's Salve, theVulnerary andElixir dropped by enemies,Asugi'sSweet Tooth, andCaeldori'sCamaraderie.Dual Guards are also going to be incredibly useful to completely negate damage. Pairing up Asugi withRhajat gives him more power with theFlame Shuriken, and pairing up Midori with Caeldori grants her some more speed to resist getting doubled.Shiro will be doing most of the heavy lifting with the sheer combat power he has withRaijinto. Fortunately, some of the stronger foes will not end up moving to intercept the player, while some will move on turn 7. Do be careful to not get caught by reinforcements that spawn from the marshes. Plan around efficiently taking out as many foes as you can in one turn, while also trying taking minimal damage in return.
