TheHero (Japanese:勇者Hero) is anadvanced infantryclass which debuted inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in almost all subsequent games, acting as thepromoted form of theMercenary in most of its appearances. It is absent inGenealogy of the Holy War andThracia 776, in which its role as the promoted class for theSword Fighter is filled by two functionally identical classes: theForrest in the former, and the Mercenary in the latter. In addition to its usual role as a normal class, the Hero has twice served as aLord-like class exclusive to the protagonist of a game: it isAlm's promoted class inGaiden and its remake,Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, andIke's second-tier initial class inRadiant Dawn. Additionally, it exists as a class exclusive to the NPCGreil inPath of Radiance, unavailable to the player.
Ever sinceGenealogy of the Holy War, the Hero (or its substitutes) has acted as a counterpart and opposite to theSwordmaster class: compared to Swordmasters, Heroes trade someskill andspeed for greaterstrength and slightly improvedHP anddefense. As such, they typically make for superior front-line units, capable of dealing very substantial damage while being durable enough to survive bombardment in theenemy phase. As with most other physically-oriented units, however, the class'sresistance is lacking on average.
Traditionally, the Hero is thepromoted form of the Mercenary, although variations on this exist.The Sacred Stones,Awakening, andFates give Mercenaries a secondary alternative to Heroes, theRanger andBow Knight respectively, while also allowingFighters to promote to Hero;Fighters also promote to Hero inGaiden andShadows of Valentia, with both being Alm's personal classes. Heroes do not promote from anything inPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn, and in the latter as Ike's initial class it has a third-tier promoted form, theVanguard. InEngage, Heroes instead promote from Sword Fighters, who are allowed to choose between two different variants—one that useslances as its sidearm, the other using axes—depending on the unit's weapon proficiencies.

Trivia
- The Hero is the only class inGaiden andShadows of Valentia that wields two physical non-monster weapon types.
- Additionally, inGaiden, the Hero is the only class to have a baseluck stat that is not 0.
- Although Heroes share the same idle stance as theTrickster class inThree Houses while wielding a sword, their attack animations are distinctly different from the latter. This contrasts towards other classes that share the same attack animations and idle stance while wielding certain weapons such as theSwordmaster andMortal Savant class.
- Although the Hero class does not appear inWarriors: Three Hopes, generic NPC Heroes can be seen in theBase Camp in all three routes. This is likely due to the class being scrapped late into development.
