Henry (Japanese:ヘンリーHenri) is a playable character first appearing inFire Emblem Awakening. He is aDark Mage that defected fromPlegia.[1]
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Henry is the second, and last, character of the Dark Mage class to be recruited, with the first beingTharja. He first appears and is recruited inChapter 13 within a murder of crows.
In his appearance in Chapter 13 he states that he wishes to joinChrom's army to get more opportunities to kill people.[2]
While Henry makes his in-person appearance after the Plegia–Ylisse conflict is two years over he was present in the Plegian military;[1] though he never saw full deployment in battle against Ylisse.[3] According to a conversation between him andPanne he is responsible for informing her of the attempt onEmmeryn's life inChapter 6.[4] Presumably due to being in the Plegian military for a time, Henry is familiar with several Plegian generals, such asVasto and evenMustafa.[5]
Once Henry joins the Shepherds he accompanies the group until the defeat ofGrima.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Henry is a level 12Dark Mage starting in Chapter 13 ofAwakening. He comes with an interesting stat lineup. He comes with a decent HP base for a magic character, great magic and skill, lowish speed, decent luck and defense, and terrible resistance and strength. His growths all relatively good except resistance and luck. His strength growth is good for a magic character, giving him a better chance to use his reclass options. He starts with both of Dark Mage's skill,Hex andAnathema, which both reduce the avoid of nearby enemies, and Anathema reduces crit avoid as well. He also starts with a C in tomes, letting him use decent tomes like all the tomes that start with arc.
Henry only has his base class line for a magical one. His strength growth becomes decent if he promotes toDark Knight, being 50%, making it a much better option to be able to utilize all its attributes. For skills, Dark Knight getsSlow Burn, which increases accuracy gradually during the battle, andLifetaker is great when paired with his low defensive stats.Sorcerer furthers his magical power, and gives access to great skills.Vengeance adds extra damage to his attack at a chance if the enemy land an attack on enemy phase, andTomebreaker is a powerful skill that gives an extra fifty hit and avoid against tomes, which he needs with his terrible resistance.
His reclass options are both physical, but with his decent strength growth when reclassed, they can be great to get skills from.Barbarian givesDespoil for a chance at extra gold, but with his lowish luck and growth, it will not activate reliably.Gamble reduces accuracy, but gives some extra critical, and his great skill can make this ability more worth it. Both of the promotions have their own attributes.Berserker has more strength, HP, and speed, but loses the crit bonus it had in other games.Warrior gets more skill, defense, resistance, and gets access to bows. For Berserker's skills,Wrath gives some extra critical if he is at or below 50% HP, andAxefaire is only good if he will remain in an axe fighting class. Warrior getsRally Strength for a great supportive skill, andCounter for an amazing skill that damages the foe back if they hit at full damage without any reduction.
Thief still has a decent strength growth at 50%, and givesLocktouch to open chests and doors for free, andMovement +1, which is great for when he is not a mounted class.Assassin increases his strength growth to 55% and supplies better promotion bonuses thanTrickster, and gains access to bows. For skills,Lethality does not activate reliably due to the activation rate is skill divided by four, andPass lets him move past enemies, which can trivialize enemy blockades quite easily. Trickster reduces his strength growth to 45%, and gives him access to staves, which use his higher magic stat.Lucky 7 gives him twenty extra hit and avoid for the first seven turns, andAcrobat gives him unimpeded movement over movement reducing terrain, which is more helpful for lower movement classes.
When married, Henry passes better growths to HP, skill, speed, defense, and a little to magic despite being in a magical class. In any case,Sumia is usually his best wife, so thatCynthia can be a mixed offensiveDark Flier. Some goods skills she can inherit from him will probably be eitherVengeance,Tomebreaker, orLifetaker if Henry stays in magical classes, orMovement +1,Wrath, andCounter if he branches into other classes. All of his other potential wives exceptSully,Nowi, andTharja are all suitable if the player wishes.

Personality
Henry is casually cruel and psychopathic, a stark contrast to his eternally smiling, cheerful exterior. He seems to think nothing of the casual references he constantly makes to torture and dismemberment, often in the same breath as more innocent subjects[6], and he also has absolutely no problem with putting curses on other people, even his allies, or with killing people in battle. According to his profile in thebarracks he has the lowest blood pressure among his comrades; this may be related to the constant facade he puts up around other humans. He always wears a smile around others though some are able to see through this. His hollow attitude does not extend to animals, namely crows and ravens, which he can often make an almost instant emotional attachment to.[7] Henry tends to deny that his smile is fake when confronted about it by others.
Despite his lack of empathy towardshumans, he shows kindness to those he does get attached to, he tries to comfortKellam when he is told that he feels lonely and ignored, albeit in a very unusual way; he tries to cram himself into Kellam's armor while he is still wearing it.[8] He also shows caring and restraint towards his child, stating that he will stop at any time in training if things get "kind of scary".[9] He is suggested to be a very caring and loving father.[10] Henry also seems to be somewhat possessive, as he states that he would like to curse his lover to be unable to look at other men.[11]
Henry has an affinity for animals of all kinds. He is able to tell individual animals of the same species apart, to the respect ofCherche.[12] Henry states that this is due to him often being left alone by his parents; he would use the time he was abandoned as time to interact with animals.[13]
Awakening's localization plays up his affinity for crows and puns.[14]

AfterGrima's demise, Henry made a cold, clean break from history, never to stain its pages again.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Robin, High Deliverer
Many wrote of Robin's legendary exploits, but accounts of her origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone—she loved her husband, Henry, above all else.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Lissa, Sprighty Cleric
Henry settled down with Lissa and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son, however, developed a notably bizarre personality, in no small part because of his colorful parents.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Sully, Crimson Knight
Henry settled down with Sully and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Sully trained their newborn daughter hard in the art of war, and the girl rose to every expectation.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Miriel, Rapier Intellect
Henry settled down with Miriel and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son grew up surrounded by his parents' vast library, dooming him to a future as a bookworm.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Sumia, Maid of Flowers

Henry, Twisted Mind & Panne, Proud Taguel
Henry settled down with Panne and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son was far more taguel than human and would come to be known as his dying race's last hope.

Henry, Twisted Mind & Tharja, Grim Stalker
Henry settled down with Tharja and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn daughter's mood was said to shift violently, perhaps a side effect of having two dark mages for parents.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Olivia, Shrinking Violet
Henry settled down with Olivia and turned out to be a surprisingly good father. Their newborn son inherited both his father's grin and his mother's undying love for entertaining others.
Henry, Twisted Mind & Cherche, Wyvern Friend

Trivia
- Henry's birthday happens on November 13th, and he is recruited in Chapter 13 ofAwakening; in Western culture, 13 is an unlucky number associated with witchcraft. Given Henry's characterization, this was probably a very deliberate choice.
- Ironically, November 13th is World Kindness Day.
- When Henry steps on an event tile, sometimes he mentions that he once saw a man transform into a raven, probably referencing theRaven tribe from the Tellius games.
- Henry shares his Japanese voice actress, Akemi Okamura, withEmmeryn.
- Henry has a unique victory pose that depicts him laughing gleefully over his fallen opponent if he is in a class that lacks a mount.
- In a support conversation with Miriel, Henry references the "band camp" line from the filmAmerican Pie.

- ↑"Henry: I know I'm here a lot, but I always feel safe and happy when I'm with Minerva.
Cherche: ...So now that you're here, Henry, I hope you'll let me ask you something. You're always smiling and laughing and acting as if you hadn't a care in the world. Yet, you never seem to make friends with people or allow them to get close. ...Even me.
Henry: What? You think so? Nya ha ha! I'm not like that at all!
Cherche: There you go with that laugh again. It just sounds so hollow... I wonder if it's even possible for someone to be your true friend?
Henry: Sheesh, Cherche. It's not like that! We're already friends! Anyway, I'm glad we had that chat, but are we going on patrol today? I want to fly on Minerva's back again!
Cherche: ...No. Not today. I think it's best if you don't see her for a while.
Henry: Wha—?!
Cherche: I'm very happy that you like Minerva and you two get along so well. But I think you need to spend more time with human friends—namely, me. So I'm going to carry out my patrol on foot, and you're coming with me.
Henry: Huh. Well, all right. If that's what you want, it's fine by me!
Cherche: Good. Let's go, shall we?
Henry: Forwaaaaaard, march!" — Henry, toCherche,Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑"I think I get it now. Seems to me you're barking up the wrong tree, tin man. Visibility isn't your problem—you're just lonely! So all we gotta do is find a way to make you stop feeling lonely! [...] I'm trying to climb inside with you! I figure that suit's so big, there's gotta be plenty of room in there for both of us!" — Henry, toKellam,Fire Emblem Awakening

- ↑"Henry: Sure have! She's as cute as a button, that one. ...Well, if buttons were cute. We had wyverns in Plegia, you know, and also the occasional fell beast. But we didn't have a single wyvern that was as pretty as Minerva.
Cherche: You're very astute. Not many humans realize how beautiful she is. They think wyverns all look the same, but people like you and I know better!
Henry: Yeah, it's sad that some folk can't tell the difference from one animal to the next. I mean, pegasi, wyverns, dogs, birds... They're all as different as you and me!
Cherche: You must really love animals.
Henry: Yep! I make four-legged friends wherever I go! And even some two-legged ones. I'm also pals with a three-legged bear, but that's a story for another time." — Henry and Cherche in asupport conversation,Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑"Henry: Well, when I was young, my best friend in the entire world was a giant wolf. My parents ignored me most of the time, so that wolf became my whole family. Then one day she came to visit me, and some hunters in the village... They shot her full of arrows. Killed her on the spot." — Henry,Fire Emblem Awakening
