Hayato makes his first appearance at the end ofChapter 8 where he is introduced to Corrin's army after they successfully overcome Fuga's challenge in the Wind Tribe Village. Fuga urges Corrin to recruit Hayato into their ranks, describing him as a skilled Diviner who is in need of real-world experience. Although initially hesitant due to mistaking Hayato for an ordinary child, Corrin is later convinced otherwise by Fuga's persuasions. Before Hayato departs with Corrin, Fuga urges Corrin to take good care of him, prompting him to, in a fit of annoyance, remind him that he is no longer a child. Hayato helps Corrin settle an age-old conflict shared between Hoshido and Nohr.

Revelation

Hayato is one of the foes faced by Corrin's army during Fuga's challenge in the Wind Tribe Village duringChapter 9. Despite the effort staged by Hayato and his allies, they are eventually defeated, and the Wind Tribe is thereafter convinced of the sincerity of Corrin's intentions. Fuga then offers to provide aid to Corrin's army, only for Hayato to step forward of his own accord to volunteer himself. Hayato later helps Corrin to put an end toAnankos' machinations.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Hayato is a level 1Diviner starting in Chapter 9 ofBirthright. Starting out, his bases are a little low compared to the enemies' stats, even on Normal. However, his growths are rather solid; his HP and luck rank among the highest of all magically-inclined characters, and his magic and speed are good. His skill growth is subpar, although his base and starting class help him overcome accuracy issues; his resistance will also rely on his base and Diviner class growth to be salvaged, as it will otherwise be low. Crucially, however, Hayato possesses decent strength and defense growths for a mage, which grants him more than enough potential to run a hybrid class. His D-rank in tomes grants him access to theRat,Ox, andSheep Spirits, the latter is great to prevent the need to have a healing item in his inventory.

InRevelation, Hayato starts as a level 9 Diviner in Chapter 10. His bases are improved to better match his enemies on the route, and he is one level away from promotion, which grants him a huge increase to his capabilities. His Strength may be a little under par for an instant promotion, but can be boosted along the way.

Hayato starts with his personal skill,Pride, and Diviner's starting skill ofMagic +2. Pride allows him to deal 4 extra points of damage to enemies of the same or a higher Level, which is somewhat useful when training him; furthermore, Pride will always activate on promoted foes as long as he remains unpromoted. Magic +2 grants him a slight early boost to his magical damage. At level 10, he will learnFuture Sight, which grants him a (luck)% chance to double his experience gain upon killing an enemy; while niche, his high Luck growth makes it more reliable on him than other mages.

In his main class line, Hayato can promote toOnmyoji orBasara. Onmyoji improves his magic and grants him access to rods and staves for a supportive role. Onmoyji's growths slightly increase his magic and resistance while reducing his strength and luck. In terms of skills,Rally Magic allows him to bolster his allies' magic at any point, andTomefaire grants him an extra 5 damage when using scrolls and tomes. Basara, on the other hand, features overall superior promotion bonuses; the increases to his HP, strength, luck, and defense lean into his hybrid potential, at the cost of some magic and speed relative to Onmyoji.Rend Heaven, Basara's first skill, grants Hayato a chance to deal additional damage worth 50% of his target's strength or magic; its second skill,Quixotic, doubles skill activation rates for both Hayato himself and his target. This skill can be very good on Normal or Hard, but is riskier on Lunatic, where enemies may pack more skills. Whereas Onmyoji adds a supportive slant while improving his magical prowess, Basara serves as a hybrid combat generalist; Hayato makes a particularly strong case for Basara, as he possesses enough of a strength growth to make the hybrid playstyle more worthwhile. His subclasses even improve his Strength, should the player seek to bolster his offenses further.

Oni Savage is his other class tree; crucially, the base class raises his strength growth to 50%, at the cost of locking him out of his tomes until promotion.Seal Resistance andShove are niche skills that do not drastically aid his performance. As an Oni Savage, Hayato stands to improve his physical power and bulk with his improved growths in HP, strength, and defense; however, it may hurt his otherwise low skill, and his resistance will be rather poor. Among its promotions,Oni Chieftain deserves particular mention for providing an alternative hybrid approach compared to Basara; compared to it, Oni Chieftain will feature superior strength and defense, but lower HP, skill, luck, and resistance, making it more straightforwardly offensive, although the lower overall accuracy from the clubs and axes it wields relative to naginata and lances from Basara, and the reduced skill is worth mentioning as the only real downside. Its skills are particularly valuable for Hayato;Death Blow grants him 20% more critical rate on player phase, andCounter returns any and all physical damage done to Hayato to the attacker. The other promotion,Blacksmith, offers more HP, skill, and speed compared to his other promotions, as well as access to katanas and swords. Blacksmith locks Hayato into a purely physical role; relative to Oni Chieftain, it features higher HP, skill, speed, and luck at the cost of strength, magic, defense, and resistance.Salvage Blow will be outclassed in the lategame, as it only provides Hoshidan Iron weapons; however,Lancebreaker is worth considering, as it provides 50% extra hit and avoid against naginata and lances regardless of his own weapon type, which his native tomes are at a natural disadvantage against.

InBirthright,Felicia,Sakura, andOrochi are all viable options for a magically-inclined S support partner, with each bringing their own distinct perks to both Hayato and Rhajat. First, Felicia grants both of them access toTroubadour as another magical class tree; its main use is the mount provided byStrategist, as well as obtainingTomebreaker for better matchups against enemy mages.Live to Serve fromButler andMaid may help alleviate bulk issues; this is more relevant to Rhajat, as she is more likely to be used as Onmyoji.Sakura grants Hayato access toMonk andGreat Master, with Rhajat instead gaining access toShrine Maiden andPriestess. Both Great Master and Priestess learnRenewal as an alternative way to alleviate potential bulk issues, andCountermagic allows them to return all of a magical attack's damage to their attacker. Lastly, Orochi grants access toApothecary; Hayato's decent strength means only he could use it adequately, whereas Rhajat's pitiful Strength renders it useless for her. Additionally, Orochi possesses the highest magic growth in the game, improving upon Rhajat's already strong magic, although her low speed growth will significantly impair Rhajat's speed as well.

InRevelation, Hayato gains the ability to support and marry bothNyx andEffie on top of hisBirthright options. Nyx grants access toDark Mage, whoseHeartseeker may prove useful if the player intends to use Hayato as an Oni Chieftain.Sorcerer then offers bothVengeance andBowbreaker for very powerful skills, and Dark Knight provides yet another hybrid option for Hayato, this time with significantly improved mobility as well asSeal Magic and, most of all,Lifetaker. This last skill adds onto Hayato's already decent durability by allowing him to regain health with player-phase kills, which Oni Chieftain already facilitates with Death Blow. In exchange, Nyx gains the Diviner class tree from Hayato, which allows her to use Tomefaire to strengthen her already impressive magical power. Effie instead provides a purely physical option in the form ofKnight, along with its promotions ofGeneral andGreat Knight. Only Great Knight'sArmored Blow,Defense +2, andNatural Cover are worth considering, since Great Knight'sLuna and General'sPavise can be a bit unreliable given Hayato and Rhajat's lower skill stats.Wary Fighter is out of the question, as Hayato packs naturally good speed and Rhajat inherits a boost to her speed from Effie. This pairing should generally only be considered if the player intends to use Rhajat as a hybrid unit, as it will level her strength and magic more than most other pairings.

Hayato: Diviner of Reppu
Hayato is a diviner of the Wind Tribe. A rare prodigy, he commands a position of authority within the tribe despite his years. His stiff manner of speech and haughty attitude do leave a certain impression. Apparently, that’s just his way of dealing with his responsibilities—he doesn’t want people to feel ill at ease about his position of leadership at such a young age.In fact, he absolutely hates being treated like a kid. I hear that on one occasion, he even put a charm on himself that sent adults who made fun of him flying into a mighty tornado! That said, sometimes his boyish nature peeps through, and he can be a bit of a scaredy-cat at times too. Well, I hope that while he’s in Askr, he can just be himself and not worry too much about what other people think!
