Hartmut (Japanese:ハルトムートHartmut) was the leader of theEight Legends ofElibe and a hero ofthe Scouring. He was the original wielder of bothEckesachs and theBinding Blade, and went on to found the Kingdom ofBern.
Biography
Late inthe Scouring, Hartmut was chosen as one of the eight mightiest warriors of mankind to wield the newly-forgedlegendary weapons against thedragonkin.[1] He was appointed the leader of this group of eight and given bothEckesachs and theBinding Blade, and led the Eight Legends in an attack on theDragon Sanctuary in order to defeatIdunn, thedemon dragon. During this battle, the sheer power of the legendary weapons caused theEnding Winter and forced the dragons to revert toweak, human-like forms.[2] Hartmut and the other Generals took the opportunity and easily slaughtered the manaketes.
Hartmut and the Generals pressed on into the Sanctuary, where they found Idunn in her manakete form. Confronted with what appeared to only be a human girl, the Generals hesitated; Hartmut, in particular, had come to pity her for the rumors of how she had been created.[3] When she transformed and attacked them, Hartmut fought back with the Binding Blade and dealt her a grievous wound, but the blade's power shifted to reflect how, deep down, Hartmut did not wish to kill and instead stunned her. He convinced the other Generals that there was no need to kill Idunn, then traveled deep into the remote mountains of what would later becomeBern and constructed theShrine of Seals, where he used the Binding Blade andFire Emblem to safely seal Idunn away. He then built the Kingdom of Bern in the territory surrounding the Shrine of Seals and took its throne as its first king, and after his death his descendants, the Bern royal family, continued to guard the Shrine of Seals for a thousand years,[4] until his descendantZephiel deliberately unsealed Idunn as part of his plan to return Elibe to dragon control.
Other appearances
Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi
Hartmut is revealed to beAl's true father late inHasha no Tsurugi. When Al visitedNiime, the two witnessed Hartmut's battle with Idunn and its aftermath through her crystal ball. Through this crystal ball, it was revealed that Hartmut had unknowingly fallen in love with a manakete, Milithia, and fathered a child with her. When she revealed that she was a dragon, Hartmut knew that he – the man who purged dragons from Elibe – could not be romantically involved with one and used the Binding Blade on her and the infant Al, sealing them away in a cavern.
