Hanneman von Essar (pronounced /'hænəmɪn/[key]; Japanese:ハンネマン=フォン=エッサーHanneman von Esser) is a character appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a teacher at the Officers Academy and a scholar who studies the power of thecrests.
Biography
Hanneman is a formerAdrestian noble born in House Essar. In Imperial Year 1159, Hanneman became an authority on Crestology in the Empire due to his discoveries onCrest research. In 1164, his sister died due to mistreatment and abuses caused by her spouse seeking children bearing crests. Disillusioned by his inability to save her, Hanneman renounced his Imperial peerage and absconded from Adrestia one year later, becoming a professor at theOfficers Academy, where he continued his Crest research with the goal of creating technology that could replicate the power of Crests and thus shatter the status-quo of the nobility system.
In 1180,Byleth arrives at Garreg Mach Monastery and becomes a teacher, whom Hanneman becomes interested with due to their mysterious crest, later revealed to be theCrest of Flames once they obtain theSword of the Creator. Hanneman becomes the homeroom teacher of theBlue Lions (if Byleth does not choose them) or theGolden Deer (if Byleth does choose the Lions) and participates in the first mock battle between the three houses, but refrains from participating in the Battle of the Eagle and Lion as a result of his rivalManuela being unable to do so as well.
If Hanneman was recruited during Part I, after the timeskip he returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth and their chosen faction throughout the war. Should Hanneman not be recruited on the Azure Moon route, he rejoins the Adrestian Empire and becomes one of the imperial commanders guarding Arianrhod inFaerghus; he can be either circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Hanneman is the worst magic-oriented unit in the game. You may think that it is impossible for a unit with a spell list that features excellent spells such as the 3-rangeThoron, the long rangeMeteor, andSagittae to be bad yet Hanneman begs to differ. Hanneman joins with the lowestspeed stat out of all units recruitable in Part I. To give you an idea of how bad Hanneman's base speed of nine is, evenRaphael, the unit with the lowest speed growth in the game, starts with a higher speed stat when recruited out-of-house. Accompanying Hanneman's bad speed is astrength of ten and a pitiful strength growth, meaning that Hanneman suffers from a chronically lowAS and is virtually incapable of doubling any enemy unit besidesFortress Knights on the lowest difficulty, even then he will likely fail to double unless he uses his lightest spell,Wind. Hanneman's bad offensive stats also give him a very weak enemy phase where he will easily be doubled by enemies with mediocre speed on low difficulties and, consequently, easily get killed in one round of combat. Unlike physically-oriented units with lacking speed, however, Hanneman cannot compensate for low speed by usingGauntlets due to his aforementioned low strength and due to the only magical gauntlets requiring an A-rank proficiency. Essentially, Hanneman is completely reliant on his MinorCrest of Indech to double enemies, but due to its 10% proc rate it is far from reliable. Despite not doubling, Hanneman will still hit the enemy hard, at least giving him chipping utility despite the fact that he will fall short of one-shotting all but the most frail enemies. Furthermore, on maddening mode, Magic-users will essentially never double most enemies, meaning that on higher difficulties, ironically enough, Hanneman is a better unit being one of few with a good magic growth and the powerful, ranged spells of Thoron and Meteor. That being said, Hanneman is still held back in being a fairly late recruit, meaning that Hanneman will start with no tutoring and, consequently, no healing utility and a D-rank in authority at base, all without inherently havingRagnarok and Meteor, his highestmight, and arguably best, spells. Even on maddening, Hanneman will likely still fall short of your other magical units in damage output as well as support and will require investment and attention to reach basic competence—not mastery—in combat.
In addition to being inferior in general combat, Hanneman's unique combat arts are useless and his options to support allies are severely lacking when compared to most other magically-oriented units. In a truly baffling decision, Hanneman was granted twocombat arts withBows which are both useless as they both calculate damage based off of Hanneman's bad Strength stat and inflict odd debuffs.Schism Shot in addition to being weak in Hanneman's hands, inflicts a debuff toResistance despite being a physical combat art. The art is incredibly niche, as you will rarely have mages together close enough to take advantage of the debuff, not to mention that Hanneman could likely weaken the enemy more by attacking with magic.Ward Arrow is locked to two-range and inflictssilence; meanwhile theSilence spell that bothMarianne andManuela have is 3-10 range and has 100 basehit, rendering Ward Arrow useless by comparison. Despite having a personal skill that grants himRally Magic, Hanneman has no other rally skills, making him far inferior to rally bots likeAnnette as well as units with better rally skills likeDorothea and Manuela who both haveRally Charm. Hanneman also lacks ranged healing likePhysic andFortify, preventing him from supporting allies despite the low movement of all magical classes. These factors combined mean that when Hanneman cannot attack the enemy, he essentially cannot do anything besides use a good support battalion, utility that even a level 1Caspar can provide. Overall, you would be better off giving any attention you would give to Hanneman to essentially any other unit recruited earlier.
If you are truly dedicated to using Hanneman, then you are best off following a magical promotion path. Hanneman's only good utility comes in his ability to hit enemies once with high might magic; therefore, his most viable path focuses on maximizing his damage output withReason spells. Hanneman should first master his base class of Mage forFiendish Blow, then promote toWarlock, then end inDark Knight for inherentBlack Tomefaire, seven movement, andCanto. Dark Knight at least allows Hanneman to see combat more often by allowing him to keep pace with other frontliners in addition to allowing him to useRecover and reposition himself to avoid any unwanted attention on the following enemy phase. Alternatively, if you want Hanneman to be able to use Meteor twice per map or use Hanneman as a 10-range support bot by keeping Meteor equipped on him, you can keep Hanneman as a Warlock especially since the class still has inherent Black Tomefaire.Bishop can also be good for an amazing supportive role with his high magic combined withWhite Magic Heal +10 for high amounts of healing, but it is best if you don't want him to fight often. If you want to go even further beyond, you can also make him master theArcher class, a certification he can obtain with his base weapon levels, forHit +20 so his spells never miss.

Endings
Hanneman, Father of Crestology (single ending)
Though Fódlan had changed, Hanneman's goal remained unwavering: to determine the workings of the Crests and to do away with the inequality caused by them. To that end, his research resulted in magical tools that could be used even without the aid of Crests. This proved to be yet another worthwhile discovery by the Father of Crestology.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Hanneman, Father of Crestology (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced her marriage to Hanneman shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Hanneman provided counsel to the queen as she worked to restore Fódlan, but his goal remained to determine the workings of the Crests and to do away with the inequality caused by them. To that end, his research resulted in magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests. The queen made good use of these tools, and they soon became a cornerstone for continued progress.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Hanneman, Father of Crestology (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced her marriage to Hanneman shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Hanneman provided counsel to the archbishop as she worked to restore the church, but his goal remained to determine the workings of the Crests, and to do away with the inequality caused by them. To that end, his research resulted in magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests. The archbishop made good use of these tools, and they soon became a cornerstone for continued progress.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Hanneman, Father of Crestology (Crimson Flower)
Very soon after Byleth and Hanneman had finished their quiet wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. The pair fought in many battles, eventually bringing true peace to Fódlan. Afterwards, they worked together to pursue Hanneman's goal to determine the workings of the Crests and to do away with the inequality caused by them. Their research resulted in magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests. The Father of Crestology and his spouse earned worldwide renown for devising tools that became a cornerstone of progress.
Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
As the new Adrestian emperor, Edelgard gave all she had to breathe new life into the government of Fódlan. To that end, Hanneman's research proved invaluable. Seeking to determine the nature of Crests, and to do away with the inequality caused by them, the Father of Crestology produced magical tools that could be used even without the aid of Crests. These were put to eager use by Edelgard, who saw both of their dreams realized. It is not hard to imagine that a pair with such similar ideologies and plans for the future would eventually settle into an affectionate and fulfilling relationship.
Dorothea, Devoted Heart & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
Though Fódlan had changed, Hanneman's goal remained unwavering: to determine the workings of the Crests, and to do away with the inequality caused by them. To that end, his research resulted in magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests. This proved to be yet another worthwhile discovery by the Father of Crestology. Hanneman also became a father in more literal sense, by raising many children with his wife, Dorothea. Their marriage was not publicly known, however, as the songstress elected to keep it secret for the sake of both of their careers.
Annette, Bloomed Overachiever & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
After the war, Annette and Hanneman both accepted teaching positions at Fhirdiad's school of sorcery. There, while educating the next generation of mages, they made great strides in their research of Crests and magic. Working side by side, the pair—formerly teacher and student, now partners and colleagues—brought great progress to the world and prestige to their institution. It is said that the wait list for students to enroll in either of their classes was notoriously long.
Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
After the war, Lysithea returned to her parents in Ordelia territory. She was joined by Hanneman, and together the two worked to research a method by which to extend her lifespan. Some years later, their efforts bore fruit, and they devised a procedure to remove her Crests. Afterward, Lysithea renounced her noble claim and continued to assist Hanneman with his research. When he passed, she took up his mantle, and by the great discoveries she made, came to be called the Golden Child of Crestology.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
After the war, Marianne and Hanneman stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. When Hanneman's Crest research fell on hard times, Marianne was able to secure Margrave Edmund's financial support to allow his work to continue. The research bore fruit in the form of magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests, and the funding allowed these tools to be produced in great number. After Marianne inherited her adoptive father's house, she guided Hanneman to create a branch of research devoted to peaceful applications of Crestology. These advancements, which Hanneman provided, became the legacy of Marianne's later years.
Hanneman, Father of Crestology & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Hanneman and Manuela held a grand wedding ceremony, to which all of their many students were invited. Later, as Garreg Mach came to be restored, the Officers Academy finally reopened, with a renewed focus on accepting students regardless of status. Manuela and Hanneman returned to work as teachers, almost as if nothing had changed, and filled the halls with their banter in the way only married couples can. Their relationship spawned a trend of romances among colleagues at the Officers Academy, but that is an entirely different story.
Hanneman, Father of Crestology & Manuela, Divine Songstress (Crimson Flower)
After the war, Hanneman and Manuela held a grand wedding ceremony, to which all of their many students were invited. Later, after the church was transformed and rehabilitated under the supervision of the Empire, the Officers Academy finally reopened, with a renewed focus on accepting students regardless of status and offering classes on a wider variety of practical subjects. Hanneman and Manuela returned to work as teachers, almost as if nothing had changed, and filled the halls with their banter in the way only married couples can.
