Hana (Japanese:カザハナKazahana) is a character inFire Emblem Fates. She is aSamurai fromHoshido, subordinate ofSakura, and distantly related to royalty.

Biography

Best friends with Sakura ever since childhood, Hana acts as one of her personal retainers.

Birthright

Hana is first introduced in Chapter 7 as one of Sakura's retainers, the other beingSubaki. They both offer to help defend Fort Jinya from a Nohrian assault commanded bySilas.

After repelling this attack, Hana joinsCorrin for the rest of the story to help settle an age-old conflict shared between Hoshido and Nohr.

Conquest

Hana appears in Chapter 22, defending Fort Jinya alongside Subaki,Yukimura and Sakura from Corrin's assault. Their efforts fail, and the fort falls to Nohr. When Hans starts executing prisoners, it is mentioned that Hana, Subaki, Yukimura and Sakura were fortunately spared from Hans' wrath. It is unknown what happens to her afterwards.

Revelation

Hana appears at the end of Chapter 8, where she and Subaki follow Sakura after she leaves to join Corrin's cause. Upon catching up with her, she express disappointment at Sakura for leaving without telling her and proclaims that she will always support her in all the decisions that she makes. Hana stays with Corrin for the rest of the story to stop the real threat,Anankos.

Hana is a playable character inBirthright andRevelation, and appears as an enemy inChapter 22 in theConquest route.

Analysis

Hana is aSamurai that joins inChapter 7 ofBirthright andChapter 8 ofRevelation. InBirthright she is capable of doubling some enemies at base, but not the faster ones such asFighters. On player phase she can dodge enemy counterattacks somewhat reliably thanks to her highspeed andDuelist's Blow. Unfortunately, this is hampered bylance-wielding enemies being fairly common inBirthright's early game, meaning she suffersweapon triangle disadvantage and will also likely take large damage as a result due to her low bulk. A defensepair up can be given to her to improve her survivability. InRevelation she joins with two less base strength and skill, which means she will be unable to do damage to even the axe-wielders she would have weapon triangle advantage against in Chapter 8, making her contributions outside of being a speed pair up bot are minimal.

Hana has very typical myrmidon-like growths, having high growths in strength, speed andskill, but low or mediocre growths in everything else. Hana primarily uses swords and her base D sword rank is normal for the point she joins in. However, somewhat comically, she cannot useher own sword at base because it requires a C rank to be used. She comes with the skillsFearsome Blow and Duelist's Blow. Fearsome blow deals damage to adjacent enemies whenever defeating an enemy in a battle Hana initiated; this skill can be useful in some cases, but usually falls short outside of choke points, and will not affect enemies using pair up as they aren't considered to be adjacent to each other. Duelist's Blow is an excellent player phase skill, but sadly does not work on enemy phase, meaning it is often better to use this skill on weakened enemies. Hana can also learn the skillVantage at level 10, but considering her low HP this skill is highly risky and situational.

Hana can choose between promoting toSwordmaster orMaster of Arms. Swordmaster gives Hana innate +10 bonuses in avoid and crit, along with giving her the skillsAstra andSwordfaire. These skills makes her into a much more potent combat unit with better opportunities to deal more damage. Master of Arms, on the other hand, gives Hana additional bulk and access to lances and axes for full weapon triangle control. These additional weapons are mostly useless on Hana as she can only use E rank lances and axes upon promotion and she does not have the necessary bulk to use them safely nor the strength to deal significant damage with the lower ranked weapons. Master of Arms gives her the skillsSeal Strength andLife and Death. Seal Strength can cripple high-attack units, and when it is used in tandem with Duelist's Blow, will grant other ally units the ability to safely finish off weakened foes. Life and Death is overly risky on a unit with poor bulk such as Hana and the additional damage is only useful for dangerous enemies such as bosses.

On the subject of reclassing, Hana can reclass into aShrine Maiden, but because of Hana's lowmagic this class and its promotions are suboptimal for her, especiallyOnmyoji. The only one that could have use, albeit temporarily, would bePriestess. Priestess can use the physical weapon of bows, making getting some class skills much easier.Renewal can help with her low bulk by healing some damage that was taken before the beginning of player phase, andCountermagic deals magical damage back to the foe if the foe attacks with magic. The main downside is that she will only have a base E in bows, so the player should keep this in mind when deciding if the Priestess class skills are really worth it.

Hana'sFriendship Seal options do give her some notable tools to her arsenal.Felicia gives theTroubadour class tree, which has similar issues with with Shrine Maiden in the fact that it also uses her worse magic stat.Strategist also continues the trend of being a poor class for Hana despite having a mount and useful support skills.Maid is the only more useful class since it has shurikens that allow Hana to weaken enemies further with debuffs, or even deal minimal chip damage with physical shurikens. Since Hana's best classes don't use staves,Live to Serve is a worthless skill. Hana's lower resistance makesTomebreaker quite a good skill, though it will take a bit of grinding to achieve and actually be put to use.Setsuna gives theArcher class tree, which is pretty good for fixing some of Hana's damage issues since theBrass Yumi has higher might than the Iron Katana, Archer has a higher strength base than Samurai, and the skillQuick Draw gives extra damage on player phase. As an additional bonus, Hana can avoid damage from counterattacks by fighting at range to somewhat circumvent her poor bulk.Sniper gives an innate +10 crit just like Swordmaster, but instead gives +10 hit rather than +10 avoid. In combination with Hana's good skill and high growth, and Archer'sSkill +2,Certain Blow can contribute to give her perfect accuracy on player phase.Bowfaire also gives extra damage with bows on both player and enemy phase, further solving Hana's damage issues. The alternateKinshi Knight gives Hana a mount, but her strength is reduced by one, and theBrass Naginata is quite weak. However,Air Superiority gives Hana more hit and avoid against flying units, making her perfect for fighting enemies from theWyvern Rider class tree if she is reclassed back to a sword class. As aRevelation exclusive option,Effie gives theKnight class tree, which fixes her bulk issues in HP and defense, but not really in resistance.Defense +2 andNatural Cover also give extra bulk.General gives the highest amount of defense, and the second highest HP stat, while having a respectable amount of resistance. Hana's high skill growth also makesPavise a pretty good skill in the right situations.Great Knight has worse bulk than General, but gives a mount, and access to the main three weapon types to completely control the weapon triangle.Luna gives a chance to reduce an enemy's bulk to deal more damage, with Hana's good skill complimenting procing well enough, andArmored Blow gives additional defense on player phase.

Overall, Hana is a mediocre unit. If she is given sufficient training, she can potentially deal great damage to enemies and often one round them, but her poor bulk, the high quantity of enemies inBirthright andRevelation, the high hit rates of weapons inFates, and lack of reliable 1-2 range make Hana's enemy phase mediocre at best. At base, her offenses are also commonplace inBirthright and she faces competition from other raw combat units such asRyoma andScarlet along with having no utility outside of combat.

There are two different variations of Hana available toHeroes. The normal variation of Hana is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch, and is also the third of twelve characters that are part of the game'sHero Battle rotation. She was first made available via Hero Battle at 7:00 AM UTC on February 4, 2017 through 6:59 AM UTC on February 5, 2017, and her Hero Battle has been available during the same time period every twelve days thereafter. A ninja-themed variation of Hana was first added to the game as part of theIn the Moment update, and was made available to players in the thirty-fourth edition of theTempest Trials+, "Ninja Novices", which initially ran from November 7, 2020 through November 17, 2020. A Valentines-themed variation of Hana was added in the A Special Gift update, and was first available to summon starting February 6, 2023.

The normal variation of Hana is one of a select few characters to have been inherently available at all five rarities, although inherent availability at five-star rarity has been limited to summoning focuses.

Hana: Focused Samurai
Hana is one of the personal retainers to Sakura, the second-eldest princess of Hoshido. She’s a ray of sunshine who keeps everyone’s spirits high, as well as a master samurai who trains day in and day out!	Hana and Sakura have been friends since they were children. In fact, I hear Hana often picked up a lot of scrapes during her training back then, and Sakura would treat her injuries. How sweet!	Nowadays, Hana’s wounds mainly come from protecting Sakura on the battlefield, and I hear they’ve left a lot of scars—marks that Hana proudly considers proof of her service as a samurai.	When Hana was just a girl, there were some people who thought she couldn’t cut it as a samurai, but I think she’s done a pretty good job at proving just how wrong they were! Nice work, Hana! We’ll show ’em what real strength is!

Hana’s a samurai from Hoshido here to give the Day of Devotion her best shot! Strictly speaking, she’s here to keep Sakura safe, but that doesn’t mean she can’t dress up for the festivities!	And what an eye-catching outfit this is! She’s wearing a glamorous Hoshidan haori decorated with a cherry-blossom design inspired by her master—the namesake of Hoshido’s national flower!	Intertwined roses and cherry blossoms adorn her scabbard, and if you look closely at the sword itself, you’ll see that even more Hoshidan cherry blossoms have been engraved into the handguard and the base of the blade!	It looks like Hana’s also brought a special Day of Devotion present for Sakura, who’s been her friend since they were children. I can’t wait to find out what it is!
