Gunter (Japanese:ギュンターGunther) is a character inFire Emblem Fates. He is aGreat Knight well versed in battle. He servesCorrin, and also tutored Corrin in combat.
Biography
Prior to the events of the game,Garon offered Gunter dragon's blood as long as he swore loyalty to him. Gunter, however, did not want to abandon his wife, child, and home, and refused.[2] This enraged Garon, causing him to have Gunter's wife and child killed, along with the rest of the people from Gunter's town. After his family was killed, Gunter vowed to get revenge on Nohr and Garon. He helped raise Corrin to use them against Garon, although he eventually developed genuine affection for the young child.[3]
Gunter is Corrin's fighting instructor, and accompanies Corrin if they side withNohr or neither nation.
Gunter accompanies Corrin on their first handful of assignments and gives advice on battle. Before the route choice Gunter is attacked byHans and falls down theBottomless Canyon after a skirmish with theHoshidan's on the border.
Birthright
Gunter is absent and presumably never rescued if Corrin chooses to side with Hoshido. He is briefly mentioned by Corrin when they say that Hans "killed" him and wants to avenge Gunter.
Conquest
InChapter 15, Corrin andAzura recover Gunter from anunseen realm; he stays by Corrin's side for the rest of the campaign, although he is not a major story character. It is unknown if he is affected by his trip to Valla in this instance; he exhibits no symptoms of such during Corrin's journey in the invasion of Hoshido. This is also proven asTakumi is the one possessed by Anankos instead of Gunter. After the war is over and a peace treaty is thereafter signed between Hoshido and Nohr; Gunter crowns Xander as the new king of Nohr and lecturesElise offscreen for making a scene during the coronation.
Revelation
If Corrin sides with neither kingdom, Gunter is also recovered from the unseen realm; however, it is revealed that he is under the control ofAnankos, serving as a sleeper agent during Corrin's travels. He is responsible for the death ofScarlet. After Corrin figures this out, Gunter summons Vallite forces and attacks Corrin's group. After his defeat, Gunter explains that his family and town were killed by Garon, sparking the feelings of hatred that allowed Anankos to control him. After his confession, Gunter plunges his sword into his gut in a suicide attempt, butSakura and Elise are able to heal him. Gunter then rejoins Corrin's forces in the final battle against Anankos. After the final battle, he quietly takes his leave and is never seen again. It is said in his ending that he may have died shortly after leaving Nohr and Hoshido, or he may have found a new place to live alone until his death.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gunter can only be described as theJagen ofFire Emblem Fates, and that he is. However, even though he should have spectacular bases, they are actually only relatively the same to the enemies. He comes with rather low HP, middling strength, luck, defense, and speed, high skill, and poor resistance. While his stats are in line with units that join around this time, his growths are all awful, with none over 40%. He also is not available for the entirety of the game, only joining in Chapter 15 ofConquest, and Chapter 7 inRevelation. He does do significantly better inConquest with him having much better bases in all areas aside from magic and a small boost to resistance. Gunter can serve as a pretty decent filler unit, even when his stats start to fall off a bit, as his good strength and high skill make him a good chip damage dealer withHand Axes andJavelins.
Gunter starts with his personal skill,Forceful Partner, andElbow Room andShelter for starting skills, and inConquest, he starts withLuna. Forceful Partner givesCorrin some extra hit and damage when paired up with each other, but he might end up getting benched several chapters later, at least inRevelation, where his terrible growths and low bases hurt long-term viability. Elbow Room only works when he is not on terrain that gives effects, and gives +3 damage when the conditions are met, which is useful to keep his damage up. Shelter gives him the rescue command to pull a unit into pair up with him. InConquest or when Gunter reaches level five, Luna halves the enemy's defense or resistance for one strike. Gunter has a very high skill base, which means he can proc it relatively often.
When Gunter will inevitably fall off,Great Knight is still an excellentPair Up backpack, granting +2 strength, +4 defense, and most importantly, +1 movement. Gunter is usable solely for his Pair Up class just because of how good the stat boosts are, which gives him some reason to stick around. However, later in the game, other units can make use of the Great Knight class better than Gunter can, and serve as the Pair-Up backpack when needed, at which point Gunter tends to be benched. If still going for skills, at level 15, he getsArmored Blow for +10 defense on player phase, giving him extra tanking power.
Gunter's baseCavalier also has the promotion option ofPaladin, which takes away some of his physical bulk and strength, for more of everything else, where the +4 resistance is great considering his low base. Gunter's pair up nature makesDefender a naturally synergistic skill for him to use if he needs additional stats.Aegis gives a chance to halve damage, where his high skill base support frequent procing.
Gunter's first reclass set isMercenary, entailing the classes ofHero andBow Knight. Both classes give Mercenary's skills since Gunter is promoted.Good Fortune has a luck% to heal damage, though his low luck base make procing not very likely.Strong Riposte is a relatively powerful skill by giving +3 damage on enemy phase, although Gunter can't really enemy phase well since a majority of enemies will end up doubling him and likely killing him in the process. Circling back to classes, Hero reduces several stats, but gives him +2 speed and +4 skill. Even then, this is probably the worst of his base classes mostly due to having six movement, when all his other classes except Great Knight's seven move, have eight points of movement.Sol is another proc skill, where it can be decent for self-healing, andAxebreaker gives extra hit and avoid against axes, which can help circumvent his low skill growth. Bow Knight makes Gunter less physically bulkier, stronger, and accurate than Hero, but makes him slightly faster, gives much more resistance, and has more movement.Rally Skill gives Gunter a support niche, which can be a fine option when his combat suffers.Shurikenbreaker gives tons more hit and avoid against shurikens, which Gunter appreciates to avoid them debuffing his stats, which he can struggle to get more of with his low growths.
Gunter's final reclass isWyvern Rider, where its high movement in both promotions make this a useful reclass.Strength +2 helps improve his combat a bit, andLunge gives him extra movement opportunities. The main promotion ofWyvern Lord loses HP, strength, and resistance, but has +3 skill and +1 movement.Rally Defense is another neat supportive skill, andSwordbreaker gives extra hit and avoid against swords as another way to fix Gunter's later accuracy issues.Malig Knight is a relatively poor class for Gunter, as it reduces almost all of his stats, and gives a negligible increase to his magic, meaning he won't be able to fight well with tomes with him having six points of magic and E-rank tomes. However, the skill access can make up for this class's shortcomings if Gunter exclusively uses axes.Savage Blow gives more utility with dealing a good amount of chip damage after combat, andTrample gives more damage against unmounted foes, which are very common in both routes he is present in.
Due to plot restrictions, Gunter can only build supports in theConquest route. There, he can only support both genders of Corrin,Jakob, andKana is he is Gunter's child. Jakob gives GunterTroubadour via aFriendship Seal, but since he is promoted, he’ll gainStrategist andButler for new classes. From either of these classes, Gunter can obtainResistance +2 for extra magical bulk, which is useful considering his poor base, andGentilhomme to reduce damage taken by female units. Strategist is no help to him whatsoever, especially with an abysmal base 7 magic and lack of physical weapons.Rally Resistance andInspiration are not worth the trouble to get despite being decent skills in their own right. Butler's saving grace is the fact that most daggers are physical weapons. However, Gunter loses several points of his strength, daggers are low might weapons, and he'll start at E rank for a bit. In addition, he trades a lot of his HP and defense for only a few points of resistance, but improves his already stellar skill, and his speed and luck. Since Gunter doesn't do well in most staff-wielding classes, he won't needLive to Serve.Tomebreaker, however, is an immensely useful skill considering his low resistance base and poor growth, as it lets him have a better shot at avoiding tome attacks, in addition to improved accuracy. This will be a very investment-heavy skill, however, but it can be really nice if the player intends to use Gunter in the long run.
Overall, Gunter is a unit that suffers from low growths in both routes, and low bases inRevelation, with no way to really improve them without depriving other, better units that may be more worthy of investment. The player can either bench him soon after, fix him with stat boosters and tonics, or keep him as a good pair up bot with Corrin.

Personality
In typical situations, Gunter is a grounded and formal individual. He was an initially loyal knight in the service ofNohr, but later grew distrustful of the noble class of society.
AfterGaron murdered his family and destroyed his home Gunter was filled with hatred and patiently waited for the chance to get his revenge. His first step to revenge was turningCorrin against Garon, though through this process he ended up legitimately bonding with Corrin as a child. When Gunter was tasked with Corrin's care, Garon refused better living conditions for the child so Gunter took matters into his own hands, this included: requesting spare meal portions, reading Corrin stories at night for comfort, and fashioning a toy ball from a whip intended to be used as a punishment tool.
Gunter is a strict tutor and will hound his students until they fully grasp their tasks. He was responsible for trainingJakob from street urchin to first class butler, and still critiques him in the present even though he himself has admitted Jakob has grown into his role excellently.
