[Ordwin's] peerless knights tamed their neighbors the barbarians in the kingdom's infancy, securing [Grust's] place as one of the greatest of the Seven Kingdoms.
— Shadow Dragon narration

TheKingdom of Grust (Japanese:グルニアGrunia) was a nation ofArchanea, occupying a peninsula to the south ofKhadein andChiasmir, along the westernmost reaches of the continent.

History

Prior to game events

Prior toOrdwin, the Grustian land was a province under theDolhr Empire,[1] which formed as a kingdom in A.C. 501 atop Dolhr's loss from theWar of Liberation.[2] After being crownedArchanea's king,Caldas—in fearing the growth of Ordwin's popularity—drove him away to the Grust region,[3] where Ordwin was later known to man the Grustian garrison.[2] Many of his admirers followed Ordwin to Grust,[4] and began to cultivate the barren land into a kingdom[5] with Ordwin becoming its king. As they conquered the neighboring barbarians and thieves, Grust's renown for its peerless knights grew on the continent:[5] making it one of Archanea's Seven Kingdoms.[6] It is also known that Grust practiced coexistence with the survivingManaketes,[7] and that the Kingdom of Archanea has oppressed the country for a long time.[8]

Closer to the occurrence of theWar of Shadows, Grust's nobility/knighthood was known to neglect the citizens along the country's frontier, which gave rise toCamus leading his knights to protect them.[9] Amongst the frontier at that time wasLena—around the age of ten—where she lived with her grandfather: helping him in his duties as a priest.[10] She interacted Camus during her time there, which greatly impacted her life.[11]

During the War of Shadows

AfterMedeus resurfaced in Dolhr, Grust andMacedon were reannexed into the Dolhr Empire causing its restoration in A.C. 598.[12] Grust's current kingLudwik easily complied in this alliance as he feared Medeus[13] andGharnef—the latter of which he gave custody of his children,Yuliya andJubelo, to inKhadein.[14] The War of Shadows began two years later.[15] A majority of Grust's citizens eagerly took to the frontlines, passionate to overthrow Saint Archanea for their oppression.[8] The kingdom's knighthood was mostly obedient to Dolhr's cause,[16] but some did express the situation to be regrettable.[17]

An early form of theArchanean League containing armies from Archanea,Altea, andAurelis, confronted Grust which led to the Battle of Grust.[18] The League lost the battle to Camus and were forced to retreat.[18] Afterwards, Camus is known to have led Grustian soldiers toMenedy and fought withCornelius's forces there in the Battle ofMenedy River in A.C. 602, to which Dolhr claimed victory.[19]

Outside its kingdom, Grustian armies were spread throughout the continent during the war. They commonly grouped amongst Dolhrian forces called the "Dolhr-Grust allied forces",[20] or served as enforcers to Dolhr's demands: a small cavalry force inGalder, along with the Grust employed Galder Pirates;[21]Harmein commanded FortLefcandith;Port Warren paid taxes to the empire[22] and the northern fortresses were occupied byKannival's soldiers;Castle Deil was run byZharov, who held PrincessMaria captive there; thecapital of Arcahanea was overseen by Camus and theSable Order for two years after it was seized,[a] and after their departure the city was still occupied by soldiers of Grust;[b]Horace's land contained a Grustian army bossed byDejanira;Fort Menedy was held byGrigas and his Wooden Cavalry; Altea was briefly under Camus's watch,[25] and after he leftHollstadt was known to lead troops outside the castle with Dolhrian ones within;Dactyl led troops atHelena Castle which was a key supply point for occupying Altea;[26] and theFane of Raman inChiasmir was guarded by the Sable Order whichSternlin led. Grust was also known to hold some command over Macedon's soldiers[c]—extending even to PrincessMinerva.[28]

All known areas with Grust's presence were seized by PrinceMarth. Eventually he brought a new form of the Archanean League to the Grusthold to quell Grust's hostility around A.C. 605.[d] General Camus, wieldingGradivus, was there to meet with him. Camus lost the battle, and the castle was taken by the League. Afterwards, remnants of Grust's forces led byLarissa fled to the Lair of Fire. They held villagers hostage hoping to bar Marth from giving chase, which provokedYmir to attack them. Being unable to fend him off, Larissa's army shifted focus on the Archanean League, who ultimately defeated them and rescued the villagers.

Outcome

The Archanean League defeated Medeus and won the war. Grust in particular was deeply scarred from the war.[31] With King Ludwik now deceased,[14] PrincessNyna provided GeneralLorenz the position of Grust's regent personally,[32][33] and Lorenz tasked himself to raise Ludwik's children whomWendell rescued.[34]

Archanea's occupation

AfterHardin became Archanea's emperor, he stripped Lorenz of being regent and gave GeneralLang control of the country—deploying anoccupation army to ensure Archanea's control.[35] Hardin's ultimate goal was to eventually destroy Grust,[36] and take custody of Ludwik's children; but Lorenz sheltered them in fear of their supposed execution.[37] To find them, Lang practiced despotic methods,[38] provoking Grust's citizens to amass a rebellion which Lorenz served as its leader[39] in A.C. 607.[40]

Eventually, Marth andArran[41] led anexpeditionary force to Grust after receiving Hardin's missive demanding their aid battling the rebels, in a ploy to divide their military and invade Altea.[42] By the time they closed in on the rebels' fortress, Lorenz was in a critical state and had the presence ofOgma who helped him at theTalys King's behest;[43] soon departing with Lorenz's permission aiming to kill Lang.[44] Most of the other rebels at time had also deserted, and bandits rummaged the area.[45]

Lorenz spoke with Marth and entrusted him the royal children hoping he would protect them, and then took his life. Lang appeared afterwards and forcibly took the children, along with ordering Marth to head for Macedon to stop another rebellion there. Lang took the children away to Averne Castle and looked to execute them,[46] but Ogma came to their rescue and infiltrated the building.[47] Afterwards, he took them to Macedon in looking to meet with Wendell.

Liberation of Grust

Lang within the throne room of Arverne Castle.

After Ogma and the children reunited with Marth in Macedon, the Altean army traveled back to Grust in hopes to free it from Archanea. Their liberation was a success: they claimed Averne Castle and killed Lang. Afterwards, they rescued Wendell from the castle's prison.

Archanean Alliance

After theWar of Heroes concluded, Grust was annexed into the Archanean Alliance ruled by Marth.[48]Draug became the leader of the garrison there,[49] and Jubelo and Yuliya traveled to study in Altea and Archanea respectively.[50][51]
