TheGreat Knight (Japanese:グレートナイトGreat Knight), known as theAxe Paladin (Japanese:斧騎将グレートナイトGreat Knight) inFire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, is anadvanced mountedclass, primarilyaxe-wielders, which debuted inFire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. The class exists divided into two variations over the course of theFire Emblem series, which share some fundamental similarities with each other but are intended somewhat differently.

In its original incarnation inGenealogy of the Holy War,Thracia 776 andRadiant Dawn, the Great Knight (Axe Paladin inRadiant Dawn) is thepromoted version of theAxe Knight, exclusively wields axes, and is a counterpart to its fellow weapon-specific advanced mounted classes:Bow Knight/Bow Paladin,Duke Knight/Lance Paladin andRanger/Blade Paladin. InThracia 776, Great Knights are forced todismount to enter buildings or participate in chapters set entirely indoors, and when doing so are forced to wieldswords instead. The second variation is that ofThe Sacred Stones,Awakening,Fates,Three Houses, andEngage, acting as a promoted class for bothCavaliers andKnights in the first three titles while possessing access to swords, lances and axes in equal measure but only possessing lance and axe proficiency inThree Houses and only having access to a mix of two out of the three standard melee weapons inEngage—they also gave cavalry bonuses when used withEmblem Rings in the latter.

In both cases, Great Knights are built to be bulkier and more defensively oriented than the Paladin by possessing greaterHP anddefense and slightly superiorstrength at the expense of lowerskill andspeed, though this is more pronounced in theThe Sacred Stones/Awakening version of the class. TheThe Sacred Stones/Awakening variant is designed as a hybrid betweenmounted andarmored classes, possessing theweaknesses of both categories and acting as a mid-point between the stat spreads of the two; similarly, theThe Sacred Stones/Awakening/Fates version possesses lowermovement than all other advanced mounted classes, while theGenealogy of the Holy War/Thracia 776/Radiant Dawn version possesses equal movement to its counterparts. TheSacred Stones/Awakening/Fates Great Knights are also very effective in melee combat, as they are able to use all three weapons in theweapon triangle; they can easily pick a weapon that is advantageous against the weapon they are facing.
