General
- This article is about the recurring class. For the skill inThree Houses, seeGeneral (ability).
| ||||||
|
TheGeneral (Japanese:ジェネラルGeneral) is anadvanced armoredclass which debuted inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and is present in almost every game since; with the sole exception of the first game, it is thepromoted form of theKnight or its weapon-specific variants. It is absent inGaiden andEchoes: Shadows of Valentia, where it is replaced by theBaron class; inRadiant Dawn, where it is divided into three weapon specialist variants—theSword General,Lance General, andAxe General; and inThree Houses, where it is replaced by the equivalentFortress Knight.Engage, similarly toRadiant Dawn, has three weapon-specific variants of the General, but they vary only by their choice of weapon.
Generals almost always have the option to wieldlances, with the sole exception ofFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light where they can only useswords. Their other weapons have varied wildly across the series, withGenealogy of the Holy War andThracia 776 even giving them access to all four physical weapon types.
As with their basic form, Generals epitomize slow and defensive gameplay: their immensedefense andHP grants them excellent defensive capabilities, at the expense of lowspeed and the lowestmovement of any class. Though theirresistance stat is average, it is low compared to their defense, making them relatively vulnerable to magical attacks.
Their combat capabilities are decent, with goodstrength and typically possessing access to a wide variety of physical weapons, but they are hindered by their low speed often leading to them beingfollow-up attacked, and by their low movement preventing them from keeping up with other allied units in crossing the field. The ideal use for Generals is as defensive pivots to guard choke points and thrones indefensive maps, or as bait to lure physically-attacking enemyunits and sponge their attacks.
The General is the promoted form of the Knight in most games, with some exceptions. Despite both classes existing at the time, neither was associated with a class change line inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light; this was changed inMystery of the Emblem with the establishment of the General as the Knight's advanced form. InGenealogy of the Holy War,Thracia 776, andEngage, the weapon-specific Knight variantsSword Armor,Lance Armor, andAxe Armor take the Knight's place in the class line.The Sacred Stones,Awakening,Fates, andEngage allow Knights or their variants the option of promoting to either General orGreat Knight.

- Generals are unable to wieldLevin Swords inShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light due to graphical glitches resulting from their battle animations.
- The General is one of only two playable classes inFire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (the other being the unpromotedArmored Knight) and the only playable class outright inFire Emblem: Thracia 776 to be able to wield lances while unmounted.
