Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gatrie is an armor knight available in earlygame, leaves in Chapter 7, then rejoins in Chapter 13 if Astrid talks to him. He has very high base health, strength, and defense, and uses lances (1–2 range) so he starts as a powerful bulky tank and is very valuable in earlygame; these bases are good enough for him to keep up upon rejoining too. His growths in these stats are some of the highest in the game too, almost guaranteeing he will stay a strong tank, thoughPath of Radiance enemies are usually physically weak so his high bulk is often overkill. He also has high constitution so he can shove most unmounted beorc in the game.
However, since his speed base and growth are extremely low, it will be very rare for Gatrie to double. This can be alleviated by equipping the Knight Ward to boost his speed growth to 55%, but it will take a long time for him to grow out of it due to his bad base, and is better off used on the cavaliers. Furthermore, while his skill growth is excellent, his base skill and luck are very low as well, so his accuracy with lances will be unreliable early on. Gatrie also suffers from low mobility due to his class, having 5 move unpromoted and 6 promoted (both 1 lower than other infantry). While this is less of a problem in earlygame with smaller maps and a less developed team, when maps are bigger through midgame and on, he easily falls behind. This is exacerbated by worse movement penalties of his class. He also gains swords upon promotion, but this is not much of a benefit because of its lack of 1–2 range and power.
Gatrie does not start with any skills, so the player can equip him with any skills they'd like. Luna can be useful to help Gatrie deal more damage, but he has fewer chances to activate it than other Occult users due to his lack of doubling and bad base skill. He will have very high health so Resolve and Wrath can help (keep in mind, due to his likely bad speed, Resolve won't give as much of a speed boost).
Gatrie has a light affinity, giving defense and accuracy. Marcia benefits from the extra defense and accuracy, and gives a little bit of attack with her own fire affinity; however, she is a flier and keeping her near Gatrie requires limiting her movement severely. Astrid can benefit from extra accuracy and avoid, but she is mounted and is not recommended as a support partner for similar reasons as Marcia. Ilyana has her own light affinity, giving both her and Gatrie +3 defense +15 accuracy at max support, and due to her lower mobility, she is likely Gatrie's most useful partner.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gatrie is a Lance General available from the start of Ike's team. He has excellent bases all around, with excellent bulk, strength, and even acceptable speed, so he is very valuable in early Part III. He can wield both lances and axes, and while his lance rank will be higher, the axes he can immediately use will be stronger, in particular he has access toHand Axes for superior 1–2 range. This is all complemented by his excellent growths in strength, speed, and defense, in fact being the only unit in RD with a 60+% growth in all three stats. He is also very close to capping health, strength, and speed, being one 1, 2, and 3 points respectively from capping (2 of which start capped withPath of Radiance transfers), so it is easy to fix his weaker stats with BEXP.
Despite his statistical prowess his class severely limits him long-term. His class cap limits his speed to 23 as a General, which will cut his speed growth short and on hard difficulty prevent him from being able to double most non-slow enemies in Part III, especially later on, and his level isn't high enough to get enough levels on hard to promote quickly without excessive investment. Furthermore, his class severely limits his mobility, with only 6 move and taking heavier terrain penalties, making it hard for him to keep up with other infantry units and especially mounted units, so he'll often lag behind in most maps and can't be utilized much without the player slowing down, while it'll also make him get experience even slower as he'll naturally see less combat. Since he'll cap HP, strength, and speed so early, usually doing so by level 15, and with his speed cap being so hindering, he'll really benefit from being given aMaster Crown to promote early. But as aMarshall he'll still have his movement problems that limits his ability to contribute, and the Greil Mercenaries only get one Crown before III-11 that most other units can make better use of, while if significantly used Gatrie should be on the cusp of promotion through leveling by the time the Greil Mercenaries get another Crown, and if not there should be other better units with important stats capped that are still multiple levels away from 21.
In Part IV, withMicaiah's team having a desert level that will make him unusable andTibarn's team having a swamp level that will make him near-unusable, Ike's team is the only real option for him, especially as Ike's maps are more compact and thus will make Gatrie's movement less of an issue. If promoted to a Marshall by Part IV he can be a good contributor for IV-1 and IV-4, as he will be an exceptionally durable and strong unit that can wield forged Hand Axes and can double most units if he gets enough levels post-promotion for his speed growth to kick in, and he can be placed in spots where enemy reinforcements come in to limit his mobility issues. If not trained up he can still be a solid filler unit for IV-1, as his bases and some levels will keep him decently durable and allow him to deal strong individual hits while at his tier-2 speed cap he won't get doubled by non-Swordmaster enemies, though his low skill will give him accuracy issues without high hitrate forges and his low luck will leave him vulnerable to crits, then in IV-4 on Hard there will be severalWarriors,Snipers, andHalberdiers that can double him at his tier 2 cap, requiring him to be promoted by then to contribute there. For the endgame Gatrie will have speed cap issues again, as the Marshall's 31 speed cap will prevent him from doubling non-dragon enemies from IV-E-2 onward. However Gatrie's great physical durability, strength, and ability to wield theHammer will allow him to perform well against the abundant Generals of IV-E-1, and he can have good resistance for a physical unit too with a 30 cap that will keep his durability up against the magical enemies, though his resistance growth is shaky and he will typically require several BEXP levels to approach that cap. Additionally with theWishblade he will have very strong 1–2 range against the dragons, as well as have access to theWyrmslayer if the player gets his sword rank up to B. Overall Gatrie isn't particularly good for the Tower but can contribute well for IV-E-1 and IV-E-3.
Gatrie starts with no skills. He has high enough constitution to shove almost any unmounted beorc in the game, so one could give himSmite; however, it can be put to better use on a laguz unit who have much higher constitution to shove even armored and mounted units, as well as vastly superior movement to keep up with units while Smiting them. Resolve is an excellent skill for him due to his high health, which patches his speed issues enough for him to reliably double, and is not very risky due to his high bulk; on the other hand, it may be difficult to bring him to resolve health because of his bulk, and for the Greil Mercenaries to get Resolve they need it transferred over byIlyana from the Dawn Brigade, who arguably need it more. This is similarly the case for Wrath. Many other skills depend on the speed stat to activate, which he lacks once he caps it, so they are better used on other units, and with his bulk Gatrie benefits a lot less than other units from skills that prevent counterattacks likeCancel andDisarm. With Gatrie's exceptional durability he makes a good user ofProvoke to draw away enemy attention from your more fragile units, though his mobility issues will limit his usage of it when he can't keep up with the front line.
Gatrie has a light affinity which gives defense and accuracy. Additional defense is mostly overkill and not that useful on Gatrie, but with his lowish skill base and growth he can benefit from the accuracy boost, especially if he isn't being significantly invested into. Titania has another light affinity, and would get a useful +3 defense when paired with Gatrie, but she is a mount so keeping them together requires severely limiting her movement or having her carry Gatrie. Mia and Boyd appreciate the extra defense from Gatrie, and give their own attack and accuracy boost too, but they too have higher movement than Gatrie and will be held back trying to stay in support range.
