| “ | I said "sweeten the deal", didn't I? Don't get me wrong, I'll take the gold, too. Later. Unless you've got more of these. ...Have you got more of these?! | ” | — Gaius, toChrom |

Gaius (Japanese:ガイアGuire) is a playable character inFire Emblem Awakening. He is aThief living inYlisse and will do any job if paid the right price. He loves sweets and has candy hidden all over his body.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
He appears as an enemy inChapter 6 withValidar's forces. While most of the others under Validar's command enteredYlisstol to assassinateEmmeryn, Gaius was only told that they were going to rob a vault.[1] Gaius, having no intention of harming Emmeryn, even calling her as a "sweet lady",[2] is then easily persuaded to switch sides byChrom andLissa's bag of sweets after a brief conversation.
Despite not being a legacy character, there is a unique item named for Gaius available through theBarracks orevent tiles:Gaius's Confect.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gaius is a level 5Thief starting in Chapter 6 ofAwakening. While many of his stats, such as his HP, strength, luck, defense, and resistance may be unimpressive, his speed and skill are his biggest selling points the moment he joins. With his base speed, he can handily double every unit on the map except the other Thief, even on Lunatic difficulty. His only low growths are magic, luck, defense, and resistance, while all the others are in the 60s or higher. He comes with a base D in swords, which may not be very good, but it at least lets him use iron weapons rather than being stuck at bronze for a while. He even has some extra points until he reaches the next rank, making the process of getting to C easier. He comes with Thief's first skill ofLocktouch, allowing him to open chests and doors for free. At level 10, he getsMovement +1, which is great since having more movement is always helpful no matter the class, but especially unmounted infantry units.
In his base class promotions, Gaius can either promote toAssassin orTrickster. Assassin continues to capitalize on his high skill and speed, while also making him stronger and bulkier. He also gains access to bows for a better ranged weapon than the only ranged sword, being the rareLevin Sword that other units can use better than he can. Assassin is also great on the growths front, with the only reduced growth being magic. The first skill this class gets isLethality, which is a very unreliable skill, having at most a 12% proc rate as an Assassin with capped skill. The second skill ofPass is much more helpful, letting him move past enemy occupied squares. The other promotion of Trickster turns Gaius into a mixed support and offensive unit by gaining staves for a secondary weapon, though Gaius won't be very good at using them with his low magic and growth, and the promotion gain doesn't fully fix this flaw. He does gain some much needed resistance, though this also won't be enough. The classes growths aren't particularly great, since his magic and resistance growths will still be low even with the increases. The skills do somewhat make up for the class being lackluster in Gaius's hands.Lucky 7 is decent for giving extra hit and avoid for the first seven turns of battle, which is perfect for maps with time-sensitive objectives.Acrobat negates all movement penalties on certain tiles, which is also very useful.
Myrmidon will function relatively similar to Thief, but Myrmidon will have slightly better stats, making this a great reclass choice. The starting skill ofAvoid +10 is nice if the player has few available skills, andVantage is a very powerful skill if used properly, and in the right situations. Myrmidon can also promote to Assassin, meaning the only unique promotion option isSwordmaster. This class is a bit weaker than Assassin, but is slightly faster and bulkier, and trades a bit of his skill growth for a bit more to his resistance growth.Astra is a useful skill that has a higher proc rate than Lethality, but still has a somewhat low activation rate, with at max 22% with a capped skill Swordmaster. The last skill ofSwordfaire is great, giving a boost of five damage with the weapon Gaius will end up using most often.
Fighter is a wildly different reclass option that focuses on bulk and strength compared to Thief. The first skill ofHP +5 gives extra bulk, but will potentially be outclassed very fast. The same goes for the second skill ofZeal, which only gives an extra five crit. For promotion choices,Warrior continues the trend of being bulky and strong with its promotion bonuses. The first skill ofRally Strength is one of the best rally skills, and the second one ofCounter deals all damage taken back to the foe, with no reductions. The other promotion ofHero brings him closer to his original playstyle of a fast and accurate combat unit compared to Warrior. However, this classes does makes him slower and less accurate, but bulkier than Assassin.Sol is a great skill since he has low defensive stats, and his high skill base and growth support frequent procing, andAxebreaker is an amazing skill for an extra fifty hit and avoid against axes regardless of the weapon being used.
As a father, Gaius passed better growths in HP, strength, skill, and speed. His biggest utility is passing thePegasus Knight class line onto a female child, letting them have access to the covetedGaleforce skill.Sully,Nowi, andTharja are all choices he must pick from to give one of their children Galeforce. Since Gaius' Myrmidon class is very powerful, its inheritance should also be taken into consideration.Kjelle already gets Myrmidon from Sully, making her the worst of the three options.Nah is a decent option if the player does not keep her as aManakete.Noire is the best since she can use this in conjunction with her ability to grabBowfaire to become either an Assassin orBow Knight.

Personality
Gaius is a cool and collected individual. Although he is a professional thief, he is loyal to his morals, refusing to participate in Validar's assassination attempt on Emmeryn. This is further proved when he stays loyal to the group, while understanding some of the Shepherd's view on him, shrugging them off immediately and reassuring them his loyalty. Another example is when he refused to harmMaribelle in the past and tried to help out Chrom and Lissa with stuff he believed was a must be for anyone, regardless of their social standing. Gaius is also a slob; he does not see any problems with wearing the same clothes for an extended amount of time untilCordelia convinced him to tidy himself up. His hobbies include honey collecting, sewing, card tricks, and making his own confections.
He is aloof and loves sweets and candies; to a degree it is implied he gets paid with them instead of gold. His in-game expressions are references to this, with him saying things like "Piece of cake" or "Sweet" when he levels up or receives help from an ally.
He gets the most nosebleeds in the army. In conversations, he tends to give other people nicknames, with all known nicknames detailed in the following table. In conversations withSully, she is the one that gives him one instead: "Chuckles".
| Character | Nickname | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Robin | Bubbles | Used regardless of Robin's gender. |
| Chrom | Blue | Due to his hair. |
| Lissa | Princess | Mocking her delicateness. |

Trivia

- Gaius placed fourth in the men's bracket on the officialAwakening website's character popularity poll.[3] Like the other high ranking characters in said poll he received a swimsuit graphic in theScramble series of Awakening's DLC; specifically inSummer Scramble.
- In Gaius's swimsuit graphic, he has a piece of cloth tied around his left forearm. It is possible, and heavily implied by Gaius's conversation withAnna,[4] that this is meant to cover up his convict's tattoo mentioned in hissupport conversation withRobin.[5]
- The cloth around his arm also appears in the artwork for his Thief Exposed variant inHeroes.
- InAwakening, Gaius states that he would never lay a finger againstEmmeryn. However, in Chapter 6, should Gaius reach Emmeryn as an enemy, his AI will not hesitate to attack and kill her.
