— Gaius, toChrom

Gaius (Japanese:ガイアGuire) is a playable character inFire Emblem Awakening. He is aThief living inYlisse and will do any job if paid the right price. He loves sweets and has candy hidden all over his body.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Role

He appears as an enemy inChapter 6 withValidar's forces. While most of the others under Validar's command enteredYlisstol to assassinateEmmeryn, Gaius was only told that they were going to rob a vault.[1] Gaius, having no intention of harming Emmeryn, even calling her as a "sweet lady",[2] is then easily persuaded to switch sides byChrom andLissa's bag of sweets after a brief conversation.

Despite not being a legacy character, there is a unique item named for Gaius available through theBarracks orevent tiles:Gaius's Confect.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Gaius is a level 5Thief starting in Chapter 6 ofAwakening. While many of his stats, such as his HP, strength, luck, defense, and resistance may be unimpressive, his speed and skill are his biggest selling points the moment he joins. His only low growths are magic, luck, defense, and resistance, while all the others are in the 60s or higher. He comes with a base D in swords, which may not be very good, but it at least lets him use iron weapons rather than being stuck at bronze for a while. He even has some extra points until he reaches the next rank, making the process of getting to C easier. He comes with Thief's first skill ofLocktouch, allowing him to open chests and doors for free. At level 10, he getsMovement +1, which is great since having more movement is always helpful no matter the class, but especially unmounted infantry units.

Gaius may start somewhat weak, but will grow stronger fast. In his base class promotions, the choices are eitherAssassin orTrickster. Assassin gives more points of HP, strength, skill, speed, and defense, and gets access to bows for a better ranged weapon than the only ranged sword, being the rareLevin Sword that other units can use better than he can. Assassin also increases growths to HP, strength and skill, and only reduces his magic growth. The first skill this class gets isLethality, being a mostly unreliable skill, having at most a 12% proc rate as an Assassin with capped skill. The second skill ofPass is much more helpful, letting him move past enemy occupied squares. The other promotion of Trickster gives more magic and resistance, and gets access to staves, which are rendered worthless with Gaius low magic. The classes growths reflect the promotion bonuses, with magic and resistance being increased, and strength and speed getting reduced. The skills somewhat make up for the class being lackluster in Gaius's hands.Lucky 7 is decent, giving extra hit and avoid for the first seven turns of battle, andAcrobat negates all movement penalties on certain tiles.

Myrmidon will almost function the same as Thief, with both being fast and accurate, but Myrmidon being slightly stronger. The starting skill ofAvoid +10 is if the player has less skills, andVantage is a great skill if used properly, and in the right situations. Myrmidon can also promote to Assassin, where it once again gives more HP, strength, and skill, and gets access to bows, but does not give more speed and defense, and even loses one point magic. The skills and growths are already mentioned above. The main promotion ofSwordmaster gives more magic, speed, defense, and resistance. For growths, Swordmaster increases HP, strength, and resistance, and only reduces magic. For skills,Astra is a useful skill that has a higher proc rate than Lethality, but still has a somewhat low activation rate, with at max 22% with a capped skill Swordmaster. The last skill ofSwordfaire is great, giving a boost of five attack with the weapon Gaius will end up using most often.

For a wildly different reclass option,Fighter is an axe fighting class, not one that uses swords like all the others. Fighter increases growths to HP, strength, and defense, but also reduces magic, skill, and speed. The first skill ofHP +5 is fine to start, but will get outclassed very fast. The same goes for the second skill ofZeal, which only gives an extra five crit. For promotion choices,Warrior gives more points of HP and strength, gives access to bows, and has the same growths as Fighter. The first skill ofRally Strength is one of the best rally skills, and the second one ofCounter deals all damage taken back to the foe, with no reductions. The other promotion ofHero supplies more magic, skill, speed, and defense, and gains access to swords. Hero increases growths to HP, strength, and defense, but reduces growths in magic and speed. For skills,Sol is great since he has low defensive stats, andAxebreaker is an amazing skill for an extra fifty hit and avoid against axes regardless of the weapon being used.

As a father, Gaius passed better growths in HP, strength, skill, and speed. His biggest utility is passing thePegasus Knight class line onto a female child, letting them have access to the covetedGaleforce ability.Sully,Nowi, andTharja are all choices he must pick from to give one of their children Galeforce.

Personality

Gaius is a cool and collected individual. Although he is a professional thief, he is loyal to his morals, refusing to participate in Validar's assassination attempt on Emmeryn. This is further proved when he stays loyal to the group, while understanding some of the Shepherd's view on him, shrugging them off immediately and reassuring them his loyalty. Another example is when he refused to harmMaribelle in the past and tried to help out Chrom and Lissa with stuff he believed was a must be for anyone, regardless of their social standing. Gaius is also a slob; he does not see any problems with wearing the same clothes for an extended amount of time untilCordelia convinced him to tidy himself up. His hobbies include honey collecting, sewing, card tricks, and making his own confections.

He is aloof and loves sweets and candies; to a degree it is implied he gets paid with them instead of gold. His in-game expressions are references to this, with him saying things like "Piece of cake" or "Sweet" when he levels up or receives help from an ally.

He gets the most nosebleeds in the army. In conversations, he tends to give other people nicknames, with all known nicknames detailed in the following table. In conversations withSully, she is the one that gives him one instead: "Chuckles".

Endings

Gaius, Candy Stealer (single ending)
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Tales of Sticky-Fingers Gaius are still told in taverns everywhere.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Robin, High Deliverer
Many wrote of Robin's legendary exploits, but accounts of her origins and character varied. Scholars, poets, and bards agreed on one thing alone—she loved her husband, Gaius, above all else.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Lissa, Sprightly Cleric
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Lissa always insisted on going along, and the two survived many a comically dire predicament together.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Sully, Crimson Knight
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Sully disapproved and was said to pester her husband to take the examination for Ylissean knighthood instead.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Miriel, Rapier Intellect
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Miriel soon began researching new and more-powerful sweeteners for her husband to enjoy.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Sumia, Maid of Flowers
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. His wife, Sumia, raised pegasi, and her flower-petal readings were said to bring good luck to all.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Maribelle, Dire Damsel
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Having studied to become a magistrate, Maribelle feared the day she would meet her own husband in court.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Panne, Proud Taguel
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Amazingly, Panne dirtied her hands right along with her husband, using her keen night vision to expedite jobs.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Cordelia, Knight Paragon
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. As his wife, Cordelia was in charge of keeping law and order, Gaius dreaded the thought of seeing her on the job.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Nowi, Eternal Youth
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Nowi found her husband's work intriguing and was said to often come along and help out.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Tharja, Grim Stalker
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. Meanwhile, his wife, Tharja, set up shop and hexed people for a living. The pair were said to get many odd looks.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Olivia, Shrinking Violet
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. His wife, Olivia, wandered down more than one dark alley just to make sure he was safe and sound.

Gaius, Candy Stealer & Cherche, Wyvern Friend
Gaius never lost his sweet tooth, though he ultimately returned to less savory enterprises. When her work in Rosanne was done, Cherche would return home and cook for her husband, much to his delight.

Gaius is a thief from Ylisse, and he's here for the beach! He's well known for his love of candy, and sure enough, he's arrived wearing candy-themed swim trunks!Take a look at those sporty shorts—they're covered in cute little pictures of colorful candy!Even his bow and arrows are designed with that sweet-tooth theme in mind. The arrowheads look like ice pops, while the bow itself is covered in sweet treats of all different kinds!During hot weather like this, you might worry about it all melting away in the sun. But I don't think treats like these will last long with Gaius around!

Trivia

Gaius's swimsuit CG fromSummer Scramble.
  • Gaius placed fourth in the men's bracket on the officialAwakening website's character popularity poll.[3] Like the other high ranking characters in said poll he received a swimsuit graphic in theScramble series of Awakening's DLC; specifically inSummer Scramble.
  • In Gaius's swimsuit graphic, he has a piece of cloth tied around his left forearm. It is possible, and heavily implied by Gaius's conversation withAnna,[4] that this is meant to cover up his convict's tattoo mentioned in hissupport conversation withRobin.[5]
    • The cloth around his arm also appears in the artwork for his Thief Exposed variant inHeroes.
  • InAwakening, Gaius states that he would never lay a finger againstEmmeryn. However, in Chapter 6, should Gaius reach Emmeryn as an enemy, his AI will not hesitate to attack and kill her.
