History

The Four Winds were originally established in the alternate Elyos after the second war against Sombron to protect Nel and Nil.[2]Mauvier was the founder of the group, but he personally took on the role of second-in-command while insisting Zelestia become the official leader, though still took charge at times to mind her well-being.[3] The Four Winds mainly served in scouting duties and preferred to avoid or retreat from confrontations.[4] Despite lacking in numbers compared to the forces of other nations, their defensive efforts were still effective in saving Nel and Nil's lives on multiple occasions.[5]

The group was only formally founded by Mauvier after the war, but its members and their protectees share common histories inElusia and had informally become acquainted with each other during the war, as some individuals had met separately before they had congregated atLythos. Zelestia had escaped from the attack on the Mage Dragon village in Elusia to Lythos in the first war,[6] while Nel and Nil had arrived to Lythos soon after Sombron showed signs of returning in the second war 1000 years later.[7] At a later point while the alternate Alear was still alive, Gregory fled from a Fell Dragon church[8] and defended Zelestia from Corrupted at Givre Port while she was on a scouting mission,[9] and she eventually managed to invite him to join the forces with Lythos.[10]

On the other side of the Winds, Mauvier initially served in Sombron's army as the alternateVeyle's knight and sworn protector, but he changed sides after her death in a pointless battle, regretting his failure to keep his oath[11] and feeling personally responsible for her premature death.[12] Eventually, he found himself in Madeline's ruined hometown just in time to protect her from the Corrupted. From that point on, he took her in and they started traveling to Lythos together, while also protecting and training her for battle.[13] Nel was suspicious of his intentions initially, but in time he proved himself to be trusted by the alternate Alear.[14]

As individuals, the Four Winds shared a great deal of trust in each other and time spent together, with Zelestia feeling that the group served as a found family that could fill in the mutual voids left by their own past losses.[15]

During theFell Xenologue, the Four Winds were scouting out the actions of each nation separately, with Zelestia atFirene, Gregory atBrodia, Madeline atElusia, and Mauvier atSolm. The former three eventually regrouped with their lords andAlear to fight off the other nations for their bracelets, while Mauvier successfully halted the ritual to resurrect Sombron at Hasaude Cathedral. Soon after, Nel and the Winds were baited by Nil into a temple full of Corrupted. The Winds held back the Corrupted to allow Nel to escape initially, but the lone exit was later blocked by a sigil. With no other options other than to die fighting either way, they decided to bring the temple down to prevent the Corrupted from pursuing Nel and Alear. However, Mauvier had secretly planned to warp the others out at the last moment, and passed on his second-in-command role to Gregory before his end.[16] The surviving Winds ended up regrouping at the fallen Somniel, just in time to save Nel from Fell Nil and support her and Alear in their final battle.

After the events of the Fell Xenologue, the remaining Winds traveled to the main Elyos to supportAlear, swearing their loyalty as their attendants.[17] Even after Nel had returned with Rafal, and she considered the Winds' duty to her fulfilled and saw their relationship now as equals,[18] Zelestia and Gregory still made efforts to be at Nel andRafal's sides.[19][20]

  3. "As founder, he could have made himself the leader, but he insisted that I take that role. Although, there were times he took charge, like when I would forget to eat regular meals. He would sometimes scold me too!" —Zelestia toMadeline,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  4. "How do you think we managed to survive this long? Not by fighting bravely every time someone comes after us, but by running away." —Gregory,Fell Xenologue 3,Fire Emblem Engage
  5. "Nel: Beyond operations to place the Emblems into slumber, we are in no position to attack anyone.
Zelestia: Perhaps if the Four Winds were equal to other nations' knightly orders, it would be different. But alas, we're not. I fear we are something of a disappointment.
Nil: Nonsense. The Four Winds have saved our lives time and time again. My sister and I are very proud of you.
    " —Nel,Zelestia, andNil,Fell Xenologue 3,Fire Emblem Engage
  6. "Over a thousand years ago, when Queen Lumera was still alive... Sombron laid waste to the Mage Dragons’ village. I barely escaped with my life. I thought I might find refuge there, since Mage Dragons also lived in those lands." —Zelestia toMadeline,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  7. "Zelestia: Then Queen Lumera lost her life, and the young Divine Dragon took her place. I served the throne for the thousand years of peace thereafter. When Sombron showed signs of returning, the Divine Dragon was distraught.
Madeline: That’s a surprise. Outwardly, the Divine Dragon always seemed calm, if a little aloof. Was it around then that Lady Nel and Lord Nil─ I mean, Lord Rafal─came to Lythos?
Zelestia: Yes. At first I found it difficult to accept them. I even attacked them when we first met, intending to kill them, of course.
    " —Zelestia andMadeline,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  8. "I used to live in Elusia as a follower of Sombron. But I couldn't act like the others. The Fell Dragon craved pain and blood, and his disciples were only happy to oblige. I just couldn't join their fervor. So I faked it. And when a priest found out... I had no choice but to run. Run, or give up my life to the Fell Dragon." —Gregory,Fell Xenologue 3,Fire Emblem Engage
  9. "Zelestia: This story is from before you joined us. Back when our Divine Dragon was still alive.
Gregory: Oh, well, that’s real ancient history.
Zelestia: I was on a scouting mission at Givre Port in Elusia when I spotted some of the Corrupted. I was alone, but I couldn’t ignore the threat, so I charged in. Incredibly reckless, in retrospect. They overwhelmed me. It was too late to get away. I realized I was probably going to die. That’s when a lone figure came out of nowhere and started fighting to protect me.
    Gregory: You don’t mean...
Zelestia: I remember what he said. “This is when you run away. What will you do if you get hurt here?”
Gregory: I did say that, huh? It’s been so long, I’d completely forgotten.
    " —Zelestia andGregory,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  10. "Well, thanks to you, I lived to fight another day. More importantly... I knew I’d found a friend I could trust to watch my back. That’s why I invited you to fight alongside us in Lythos right then and there. Haha! You were so scared of the invitation. You panicked and turned me down repeatedly." —Zelestia toGregory,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  11. "Mauvier had sworn to protect her no matter what. But it was an oath he was unable to keep. He said she died in a trifling battle. He always regretted the fact that he couldn’t protect her." —Zelestia toVeyle,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  12. "I only heard Mauvier mention it once. He just said he regretted that he couldn’t protect her. He said she died too soon because of him, all in some pointless fight." —Gregory toZelestia,A Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  13. "Zelestia: I was hoping we could reminisce, Madeline. You and Mauvier met in your hometown, is that right?
Madeline: Yes. I had just lost my parents and was trying to protect my town from the Corrupted. One day, a huge horde─the biggest I’d ever seen─descended on the town. They surrounded us. There were fires, people dying in the streets... I thought I was doomed. Then, out of nowhere, a knight appeared.
    Zelestia: And that was Mauvier.
Madeline: Since he bore the armor and banner of the Fell Dragon’s forces, I thought him an enemy. But he cut down all the Corrupted around me. Every last one. And when I looked into his eyes, I knew with certainty that he was on my side.
Zelestia: And so you were saved. Then you traveled together to where I was. You lost your parents, your hometown... I was worried by how depressed you were back then.
Madeline: Yes... It’s embarrassing to think on now. Even my memory of going to Lythos is fuzzy. If not for dear Mauvier, I would’ve surely died en route. He saved my life many times.
Zelestia: But you carried on. You’re so strong now...it’s like you’re a different person.
Madeline: I have my mentors to thank, Mauvier most of all. He taught me many skills. Having taken me in, he must have felt a duty to teach me. We trained together often. And I can’t even count how many times he protected me from danger. Like at the temple...
    " —Madeline andZelestia,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  14. "For that very reason, I initially suspected Mauvier of being a spy. I thought perhaps Sombron had tasked him with tracking Nil and me down. But my suspicions proved unfounded. Mauvier earned the Divine Dragon's wholehearted trust." —Nel,Fell Xenologue 4,Fire Emblem Engage
  15. "Gregory: Zelestia...you call the Four Winds your family. What do you mean by that? Family was never really a good word for me. I’d imagine it was the same for the rest of us.
Zelestia: You’d be right. Each of us suffered difficult losses before we met. I lost the Mage Dragons, you lost your home, Madeline her parents, and Mauvier...his master.
Gregory: I only heard Mauvier mention it once. He just said he regretted that he couldn’t protect her. He said she died too soon because of him, all in some pointless fight.
Zelestia: We’re all burdened with sorrows. Having a place to return to is what eases these burdens. None of us had something like that. I think that’s why Mauvier formed the Four Winds.
Gregory: I suppose it makes sense... But isn’t that different from a family?
Zelestia: I would have agreed at first. The Four Winds were friends and allies, not family. After we spent time together, laughing and talking, I realized we were filling those voids. The four of us have supported each other in a way others couldn’t. It’s something that can only be done by those closer than friends─by people you deeply trust.
Gregory: That does sound like a family.
Zelestia: That’s what I believe. It’s why we must look out for each other. The Four Winds are family. If one of us is lost, the rest still need to protect what we have. Even to the very last.

  16. "Gregory, you are Zelestia's new second-in-command. Serve her well." —Mauvier,Fell Xenologue 6,Fire Emblem Engage
  17. "Then from now on, the remaining Winds will swear our loyalty to you as your attendants. We will go with you, Divine One." —Zelestia,Fell Xenologue 6,Fire Emblem Engage
  18. "The sentiment is appreciated. But our relationship is no longer hierarchical. We now aid the Divine Dragon as equals. You served me well in our world. And I consider your duty in that regard fulfilled." —Nel toZelestia,C Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  19. "I hope you don’t mind. This is what it pleases me to do. I want to stay by your side." —Zelestia toNel,C Support,Fire Emblem Engage
  20. "As great as it sounds to just stand aside and avoid all conflict... If I stop watching you and you get killed, I could never look the Divine Dragon in the eye again." —Gregory toRafal,B Support,Fire Emblem Engage
