Four-Fanged Offense (Japanese:四牙襲来Four Fang Attack) is the twenty-third chapter ofEliwood's tale and twenty-fourth ofHector's tale inFire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. To playLinus's version of this chapter, the combinedlevels of all lords must be 50 or higher. Otherwise,Four-Fanged Offense (Lloyd) will be played instead.

Plot

The group arrives at a border village inBern preparing for the coming-of-age ceremony of PrinceZephiel.Pent states that he does not know the location of theShrine of Seals, but thatLycian lords searching for it may instigate a war between Lycia and Bern; however, asLouise is distantly related to QueenHellene, they can arrange a meeting where they will attempt to learn as much as they can. Pent and Louise then leave; ifHawkeye is alive, he stops them—Athos gave Hawkeye aHeaven Seal to give to the Lycian lords "when the time is right", but feels Pent and Louise to be better judges of when that time will be and gives it to them.

In the village,Lloyd andLinus encounter a fellow member of theBlack Fang,Nino. Nino tells them that she is delivering a message on behalf ofher mother and requests that they all do something together once they have all finished their jobs, then departs. Lloyd and Linus wonder how Nino could be Sonia's daughter.

The lords tire of waiting for Pent and Louise to return;Legault – if he is alive – or Hector suggests that the group gather information on the Black Fang, which they begin to undertake. Hector andLyn depart together, leaving Eliwood andNinian alone. Ninian teases Eliwood about his apparent need to chaperone the others and Eliwood responds by saying that he likes her laugh. Despite attempting to keep a low profile, Eliwood is spotted by Linus and Lloyd. Linus insists that they finish their target now, but Lloyd is against attacking them in town; Lloyd opts to informhis father of Eliwood's presence and tells Linus to track their movements. Once Lloyd is gone, Linus decides to ignore Lloyd's plan and orders the Black Fang to prepare for battle, and orders them to be sure no villagers are harmed.Igor, a Black Fang member, taunts Eliwood's group into the town, thus beginning the battle.

During the fight,Geitz appears on the battlefield, and decides to discreetly join Linus's side.Dart can talk with Geitz; Dart and Geitz recognize each other, and Geitz joins Eliwood's company. Meanwhile, Nino is waiting for her contact to arrive; as she wishes she could aid the Black Fang,Jaffar suddenly arrives. Nino notices Jaffar has been seriously wounded; Jaffar tries to get her to ignore the wound but faints, leaving Nino unsure of what she should do.

Once Linus has been defeated, he lulls Eliwood into letting his guard down and grabs him from behind. Eliwood tells him to "do as [he] must", and asks Linus why they must fight considering the honor the Black Fang demonstrate. Linus is confused by Eliwood's actions, as they do not match howSonia and his father characterized him; Linus then leaves to clarify the situation with the other Black Fang members. After Linus departs, Eliwood and Lyn hope that there might be no need to fight the Black Fang, though Hector asserts they are misguided to have such faith and storms back to camp.

Jaffar awakes after Nino has taken care of his wounds; he is ungrateful for Nino's help, stating she should have simply killed him and left. Nino responds that she could not allow a comrade to die, and begins to treat Jaffar's wound when resumes bleeding, which Jaffar does not prevent. Outside the village, Linus is uncertain about the Black Fang's righteousness; suddenly,Limstella appears and drains hisquintessence, killing him. Limstella leaves Linus's body behind for Lloyd to find. Lloyd encounters his brother's dead body and assumes that he was killed by Eliwood; Lloyd resolves to kill Eliwood and his companions in revenge.

At the Bern Manse, KingDesmond arrives to speak with Zephiel on his coming-of-age ceremony; Queen Hellene meets the king in Zephiel's stead. Hellene relishes in the fact that her son will soon be recognized as the true heir to the throne of Bern. As Hellene gloats about her victory over her husband's illegitimated daughter, Desmond reveals that theFire Emblem was stolen last night; without it, the coming-of-age ceremony is impossible to conduct and must be cancelled. Hellene accuses Desmond of arranging the theft of the Fire Emblem and asks why he despises Zephiel; Desmond admits that he is jealous of Zephiel's talents and the adoration he has earned from the public. Desmond leaves, leaving Hellene desperate. Pent and Louise then come to speak with Hellene; Hellene confides her worries in the couple and they return to Eliwood. Pent informs Eliwood that Hellene has asked him to find the missing Fire Emblem within ten days, and in return will likely grant any request Pent may have; the group agree to undertake the request.

To survive this trial, you will need lances, bows, and...strong magical attacks. As for items...take pure water and a Barrier staff. Swordreavers should come in handy, too. Something else... You'll meet someone. Very powerful...with an axe. He may aid you. Send an envoy who smells of the sea to treat with him. ...That's it.

The chapter ends as soon asLinus is defeated, so the main task is to reach him. Move your main party upwards, and keep some of your stronger units on the right side, since a large number of wyvern riders and pirates will come from that side.Geitz can attackDart from two spaces away, while Dart can only talk to Geitz from one space away, so baiting him out with a unit with high avoidance or bulk is recommended. The bottom village has anEarth Seal and thesecret shop on the lone island is the last possible place to purchase weapons that dealbonus damage, but caution is due when considering the prevalence ofballistae. Linus himself is rather strong, but his relatively low resistance can be exploited by magic attacks.
