Flourish (Japanese:小手調べWarm-Up) is a combatskill which is exclusive toFire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. When equipped, it gives units the option of using a Flourish attack which halves theirattack power (that is, the damage they deal before enemy defensive stats are taken into account) for the duration of one round of attack, significantly reducing their damage output.

While it is effectively useless for serious combat, Flourish is a helpful tool for feedingexperience to weaker units, as a stronger unit can use it to cut an enemy's HP down to the point where weaker units can quickly kill them. However, as it requires being activated by command when moving its user, Flourish cannot be used to reduce the damage of its user's counterattacks against approaching enemies during the enemy phase.

Trivia

  • The North American help description erroneously states that Flourish causes the resulting damage to be halved. In actuality, it causes the user's Attack to be halved. Enemy defenses remain the same. This error was not present in the Japanese version and was corrected in the PAL release.

Flourish

Likely refers to flourishes in the sense of needless displays of a talent, such as sword-wielding, which have little practical value and are meant only to show off to others. By analogy, this means that an attack with the Flourish skill would sacrifice the attack's effectiveness at harming foes in favor of just looking impressive and fancy.
