TheFell Dragons (Japanese:邪竜Evil Dragon) are a type of dragon that have appeared in bothYlisse andElyos. They are among the most powerful kinds of dragons, with power rivaling or even surpassing that of thedivine dragons, and are often characterized by a disdain forhumankind and a desire to eliminate them. One fell dragon,Grima, is revered as agod by the country ofPlegia.

The only known Fell Dragon in Ylisse is Grima. Long before the events ofShadow Dragon, Grima was created byForneus, an alchemist fromThabes who sought to resurrect the dead and create a "perfect life form". Forneus created Grima through unknown means (though it is implied he was created fromdivine dragon blood[1]), and Grima began to grow when he received some of Forneus's blood.[2] Forneus also created the Death Masks that could turn corpses into Risen soldiers.[3] Eventually, the senate of Thabes sealed Forneus, Grima, and the Death Masks within Thabes Labyrinth.[4]

In Archanean year 608,Alm andCelica sailed fromValentia to Archanea's west coast; there, they removed the seal from Thabes Labyrinth and ventured inside, where they encountered and defeated Grima.

One thousand years later, Grima emerged from Thabes Labyrinth and wreaked havoc on Archanea, now known as Ylisse. In doing so, Grima made blood pacts with humans and came to possess them; these followers would become theGrimleal. Eventually, Grima is defeated by thefirst exalt ofYlisse—an ancestor toChrom—and is put into a slumber. Following Grima's defeat, the Grimleal founded the country ofPlegia, and awaited the birth of a child whose blood was pure enough for a resurrected Grima to possess.

One thousand years after his first attack,Robin is born to the Grimleal memberValidar, and is a suitable vessel for Grima. The Grimleal successfully steal the Fire Emblem and resurrect Grima, allowing him to devastate Ylisse once more. After years of resistance, Chrom's daughterLucina usesNaga's power to travel back in time and prevent Grima's resurrection; Grima follows her and attempts to posses Robin, but is too weakened by the time travel to do so. Though Lucina is unable to prevent Grima's resurrection, she is able to aid Chrom and Robin in defeating him before he can destroy Ylisse.

Characteristics

Physical forms

Fell dragons in all worlds are typically black and dark purple, with more than two red eyes. They are among the largest types of dragon, with Grima in particular growing to be larger than even castles.

The fell dragon seen in Ylisse has a very unusual appearance for a dragon, appearing more serpentine or almostcentipede-like. It has a scaly exoskeleton, a soft underbelly, and three pairs of feathery wings. Its head is especially abnormal, having three pairs of eyes, multiple sets of teeth, and an uncanny human-like face underneath its jaws.

Fell dragons seen in Elyos have a somewhatwyvern-like body structure, having two back legs, hand-like claws on their wings, and a long tail with a claw that can also be used like a hand. Their heads look very similar tocobras, featuring their distinctive neck hoods and forked tongues.

Powers

Fell dragons have a natural affinity with darkness, being able to breathe deadly miasma. Their affinity with dark magic can also be seen clearly in theGrima's Truth andObscurité tomes, the former of which explicitly channels the power of a fell dragon. These traits are similar toShadow Dragons.

Both the Ylissean and Elyosian fell dragons are capable of creating undeadmonsters by raising human corpses; theRisen are created by the former, while theCorrupted are created by the latter. The fell dragons ofElyos are also capable of summoningEmblems from theirrings by using incantations.

Fell dragons are also exceptionally resilient, with the Ylissean fell dragon being unable to be completely destroyed; even the full power of adivine dragon will simply put them in what can better described as a state of sleep for centuries, and they can be reawakened through the use of human sacrifices or the power of theFire Emblem. The Ylissean fell dragon can only be truly killed forever by its own power.

Behavior

The two most notable fell dragons,Grima andSombron, are both highly antagonistic, with the former having an open disdain forhumanity, while the latter seems to be at best uncaring about their fate. Despite their name, however, fell dragons do not appear to be inherently evil, as shown by Sombron's children,Veyle andAlear. Under normal circumstances and within her "true" personality, the former is generally kind and pleasant. Alear, on the other hand, while shown to be cold and seemingly emotionless prior to receiving the powers of the divine dragon, is still shown to have benevolent or at least non-violent tendencies during this time.
