Felix Hugo Fraldarius (pronounced /⁠ˈfilɪks ˈhjugoʊ fɹɑlˈdɑɹiəs⁠/^[key]; Japanese:フェリクス＝ユーゴ＝フラルダリウスFelix Hugo Fraldarius) is a character appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. He is a member of theBlue Lions house at the Officers Academy.

Biography

Felix is the eldest surviving son of the house of Duke Fraldarius, and isDimitri's childhood friend. Felix had an older brother namedGlenn, who died in battle while protecting Dimitri during theTragedy of Duscur. Felix interpreted his fatherRodrigue's remark thatGlenn "died like a true knight" regarding the honor in his brother's death as detached, so he developed a resentment towards his father and nobility in general, and became disillusioned with concept of chivalry. In Imperial Year 1178, he fought alongside Dimitri to suppress a rebellion. Dimitri's enjoyment of the bloodshed and slaughter horrified Felix and led to their friendship being strained, and Felix began to contemptuously refer to him as the "boar prince". In 1180, he enrolled in the Officers Academy atGarreg Mach Monastery and joined theBlue Lions, studying and fighting alongside them.

After the timeskip, if Felix is a member ofByleth's class, he returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. If not recruited on the Verdant Wind route, he reunites with Dimitri and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder, where he can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. If not recruited on the Crimson Flower route, he is one of the defenders of Arianrhod alongside Rodrigue,Cornelia,Gwendal, and a non-recruitedIngrid, and is slain in battle. Felix makes no appearances in the story on the Silver Snow route, but it is most likely he is one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.

Analysis

Felix is a ruthlessly strong unit on par with the likes of the lords of each respective route. From the start, Felix is incredibly strong with good bases, one of the bestcrests in the game, and a strong personal skill for the early game. With his personal skill ofLone Wolf, which boostsmight by five if he has nobattalion equipped, Felix has amazing damage output as it boosts his strength to an effective fifteen which is even higher thanDimitri andEdelgard's respective bases. However, in the long term, bonuses granted by even D-rank battalions will wildly outstrip the five point bonus to damage output or give other desirable boons, so you are best off reaping the benefits for the first few chapters then developing Felix's authority rank to at least C-rank. Felix's other major boon is his major crest of Fraldarius. The crest grants him a 40% chance of boosting weaponmight by five during normal weapon attacks. The crest of Fraldarius adds to Felix's already high damage output and has great synergy withbrave weapons andgauntlets as Felix's crest has an 87.04% chance of procing at least once in a string of four attacks. The combination of all these factors make Felix dominant in the early game and thanks to his excellent growths in bothstrength andspeed he will maintain his lead throughout the game. Felix's only shortcomings are his averagedefense andHP and his lowresistance, though these can be mitigated later on by equipping the relic of Fraldarius, theAegis Shield, which grants Felix 6 defense, 3 resistance and a whopping50% chance to take half damage; however, its 6 weight increases the risk that he will be doubled. Overall, you will likely find that Felix can easily dispatch most enemies in lower difficulties and, barring that, has enough speed to preventfollow-up attacks from many faster enemies on maddening mode while dealing high damage in retaliation.

The best early promotion pathway for Felix isFighter thenBrigand, make sure to master the class forDeath Blow, after which point Felix can reclass and excel in essentially any physical class. While he does make a greatSwordmaster, his excellent physical prowess means that he can also be a viable candidate for some of the best classes in the game, such asSniper for guaranteed double attacking viaHunter's Volley,Wyvern Lord for general combat prowess andCanto,Assassin for high speed and the best infantry movement in the game, andHero for an innate Vantage and good HP, strength, and speed modifiers. However, as alluded to before, the Crest of Fraldarius specifically grants Felix great synergy with theBrawler,Grappler, andWar Master classes. The latter two both grant good class modifiers, six movement, andFistfaire and each has its own attractive boon. Grappler providesFierce Iron Fist, acombat art that hits consecutively three times, and War Master provides a generalCrit +20,Fistfaire and a much higher strength modifier of five as compared to the Grappler's one, making both optimal endgame options for Felix. In terms of skills, Felix will have an easy time passing and subsequently mastering theMercenary class forVantage. If done so, it is recommended he also masters theWarrior class forWrath. As Felix will need an B+ to A-rank in Axes to pass the War Master exam, Felix will naturally meet the requirements for Warrior as well if the player sets Axe as one of his goal early on. A War Master Felix with the Vantage-Wrath combo, Quick Riposte, Death Blow and Killer Gauntlets and his relic equipped should be able to take on even some of the most resilient foes, both on player and enemy phase.

It is also worth noting that Felix can perform adequately in magical classes despite a low growth inmagic. Felix'sbudding talent grants himBlack Magic Crit +10 and has good synergy with Felix's highcrit spells ofThunder and the excellent three-range spell ofThoron allowing him to turn out high damage, albeit infrequently. Due to the fact that magic-enabled classes before the master tier are limited to four movement, unless you want a side promotion toMage forFiendish Blow, it is still best to lead Felix down a physical class promotion path then promote him into aMortal Savant,Dark Knight,Trickster, orWar Monk (the latter two if one has DLC) if you are set on having Felix use magic. That being said, there are many drawbacks to using a magical-oriented Felix. The most notable downside is that Felix's black magic spell list is very small, learning only two spells, preventing him from effectively capitalizing on the increased magic crit. Along with his Faith spell list lackingPhysic, a magical Felix is a somewhat inferior option for him, especially when his excellent combat prowess means that he has better performance in physical-based classes.

Recruiting for Other Routes

When recruited outside of Blue Lions, Felix will come having received training insword andbrawling. Felix's recruitment requirement of a B+ in swords is somewhat high but is still achievable asByleth is easiest to place on a sword-focused promotion path, making Felix a simple yet very powerful recruitment option. Moreover, the recruitment requirement can be lowered to Byleth's base sword rank of D+ by reaching a B-support between him and Byleth. Felix will easily excel in routes other than Blue Lions and can instantly be promoted into aBrawler if recruited fromChapter 6 onwards. Even if the player doesn't intend to recruit Felix, he can still be recruited for his paralogue loot, which is quite decent. TheAegis Shield is a good improvement to the durability of any crest-bearing unit, and hisFraldarius Soldiers have highest crit out of any battalion.

The first version of Felix—a special winter variation—was added to the game as part of theA Festival Miracle update, and was made available to players in the thirty-fourth edition of theTempest Trials+, "Burden of Gifts", which initially ran from December 18, 2020 through December 28, 2020. The second version of Felix, based on his appearance in Part I ofThree Houses, was added in theWorld of the Past update, and was first available to summon from April 17 to May 8 of 2023. A version of Felix, based on his appearance as aMortal Savant in Part II ofThree Houses, was made available for winning theChoose Your Legends 2024 poll, and was made available to summon on August 16, 2024.

Personality

Felix is somewhat hard to approach. He is obsessed with honing his skills with the sword, and will challenge any worthy-looking opponent he meets to a duel. He can often come off as cold and unforgiving, not willing to hold a conversation unless it is important or involves possibility to improve his own strength. His behavior intimidates people such asBernadetta,^[2] and he is often misunderstood, as his honest opinions are mistaken for sarcasm byAnnette.

Despite seeming unsympathetic and cruel, Felix is secretly caring, valuing his allies and friends lives dearly. Though he hates to admit it, and tries to hide it out of embarrassment, he loves his friends greatly.^[3][4] He also has a soft spot for cats.^[5]

Felix's need for strength and haste to challenge anyone he deems a worthy opponent stems from him sparring with his late brotherGlenn, and vowing to win against him, although he says it feels like fighting a corpse. Regardless, he stills pursues strength, as he vowed to continue.

Following Glenn's death in theTragedy of Duscur, Felix began to strongly disagree withFaerghus's ideals of chivalry, believing that dying honorably does not justify a death, and despises it when his fatherRodrigue refers to Glenn's death by stating that he "died like a true knight".^[6]

Although he was once a close friend ofDimitri, their relationship was strained after he witnessed his lust for blood during their part in suppressing a rebellion in the kingdom;^[7] he started to consider the Dimitri he once knew "dead" and he often refers to him using derogatory terms such as "beast" and "boar prince".^[8][9] After Dimitri went completely insane after learning theFlame Emperor's true identity, Felix lost even more respect for him.^[10] Once Dimitri finally calms down and atones for his past behavior following Rodrigue's death in the Azure Moon route, Felix begins referring to him by his name again, as a sign of their friendship healing.^[11]

He hates sweet foods, and likes meat, although his lack of tolerance for desserts can change through gaining support withLysithea.

Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Bored and restless in his capacity as Duke Fraldarius, Felix abandoned his title, jumping at the opportunity to wield a sword again. Little is known of his whereabouts thereafter, but even many years later, soldiers continued to whisper rumors of a mysterious man able to deal swift death to scores of enemies.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Felix, Meandering Sword (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth married Felix almost immediately after ascending the throne of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. When it came to matters of governance, Felix often took on duties that would have required his wife to dirty her hands and thus came to be called The Royal Sword. After they accomplished all they had set out to do, the couple left the rule of Fódlan to the next generation, disappearing into obscurity with blades in hand. Thereafter, history only provides unconfirmed reports of a pair of traveling mercenaries who possessed unmatched strength and skill.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Felix, Meandering Sword (Crimson Flower)
Byleth and Felix were engaged to be married soon after the Battle of Fhirdiad. The war against those who slither in the dark was long and arduous, but they found solace always in one another. When the fighting was finally done, they held a modest wedding ceremony and entered a new life together as husband and wife. Where they went afterward is not known, but it is widely believed that they traveled the world as mercenaries, side by side, blades in hand.

Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Felix, Meandering Sword
After the war, Felix attempted to set out on his own, but was waylaid by Bernadetta, who begged him not to go. Persuaded to stay, Felix ended up marrying into House Varley, the title of which Bernadetta had inherited. The couple got along smoothly, although it was rumored that in the early years of their marriage, she once had to restrain him physically to prevent him taking a trip to the Oghma Mountains to train. As the years wore on, Bernadetta became more reclusive, and Felix took over many of the day-to-day duties of running the house. Documents from their later years were increasingly signed with the name Felix, Count Varley.

Dorothea, Mystical Songstress & Felix, Meandering Sword
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, and some years later found himself in Enbarr. There he encountered Dorothea, who had just resumed her career as a songstress in the opera. From that time on, no matter how far Felix traveled, he always found himself drawn back to that opera house. It is said that, when Dorothea saw his face in the crowd, she sang only for him.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. Decades later, he reunited briefly with Sylvain, who had need of his services as Margrave Gautier. Felix departed as soon as the job was finished, however, and the two never met again. Years later, a sword that was thought to have belonged to Felix arrived on Sylvain's doorstep.

Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, seeking battle as if he had a death wish, but his violent path came to an end when he reunited with Mercedes. She had begun a new life as a cleric in service to the goddess, and with her kindness and generosity, she was able to turn his life around. No one knows what became of them after that, but the tales of a swordsman who made warriors across Fódlan tremble with fear all come to an end at that point.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
After the war, Felix intended to abandon his noble title and make a living with his sword. On the day that he was to depart, however, he was waylaid by Annette, who begged him not to leave her behind. Instead, she proposed that they relocate to the Officers Academy when it reopened, and take up positions as teachers. When the school did reopen, it is said that the new sword instructor was notoriously harsh, but that he eventually learned to enjoy his work. He was seen to smile, on occasion, but only in the presence of the friendly professor of sorcery.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. Unwilling to leave him to travel alone, Ingrid, too, relinquished her claim to nobility, and they both became wandering mercenaries. They skirted the line between life and death countless times in their dangerous work, but once they had a child, they settled down in a small farming village far from their homeland. With all but each other left behind, they began a warm and tranquil life as a family.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
After the war, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, seeking battle as if he had a death wish, but his violent path came to an end when he happened upon Lysithea, who had been living in a small house in the middle of nowhere with her parents. Seeing her—condemned to live a shortened life, but smiling and making the most of every day with her family—convinced Felix that life was precious. He gave up his sword to join her, and the two spent their lives baking sweets. Lysithea's recipe became known far and wide, and the treat became a tradition for the people of that region.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
After the war, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He accepted Leonie as his partner, and together they became wandering mercenaries. Their different fighting styles complemented one another well, and their combined skill was enough to handle any enemy. Some time later, the mercenary group formerly led by Jeralt joined them, and under their leadership, became the most feared company in Fódlan. After the post-war chaos passed, however, work became scarce, and the pair eventually became so desperate that they rebranded themselves as street performers. They proved surprisingly capable in their new profession.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Even after the war's end, skirmishes continued to break out across Fódlan. Learning that there were still places where he could fight, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He traveled the land, seeking battle as if he had a death wish, but his violent path came to an end when he arrived at Garreg Mach. It was there that he reunited with Flayn, who was saddened to see that Felix had continued to use his sword to kill. She left to travel with him, and it is rumored that her kindness helped turn his life around. No one knows what became of them after that, but the tales of a deadly swordsman did suddenly cease.

As Duke Fraldarius, Felix worked for years to revitalize and rebuild his territory. He became the king's right-hand man, serving as a trusted adviser on a range of subjects, especially military affairs. Later in his life, he inherited his father's nickname and was known throughout the Kingdom as the Shield of Faerghus's worthy successor.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Felix, The Shield's Successor
Byleth married Felix, who had become Duke Fraldarius, shortly after she was named to succeed Rhea as archbishop. Felix focused his efforts on restoring his territory and the Kingdom and became the archbishop's closest confidant, both privately and officially. They often spent a lot of time apart, but whenever they reunited, they had a tradition of crossing blades before crossing words. Attendants remarked that the smiles they wore on their faces during these bouts were never seen elsewhere.

Dimitri, Savior King & Felix, The Shield's Successor
After his coronation, Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. At his side every step of the way was his right-hand adviser, Duke Felix Fraldarius. Their lifelong bond grew so strong over time that, when Dimitri finally passed, it is said that Felix's grief was more potent even than the queen's. The stories of their lives were passed down to future generations as chivalric tales that rivaled those of Loog, the King of Lions, and his sworn friend, Kyphon.

After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. He married Bernadetta, who abandoned claim to House Varley in order to start a life with him. While he was away, Bernadetta handled local affairs while holed up in her room in the castle. The frigid air of northern Faerghus caused her to hide away even more than usual, but whenever her beloved husband returned, she would rush out to greet him.

After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. He married Dorothea, and the two began a happy life together. After they had finished restoring Fraldarius territory, Felix traveled across Fódlan as the king's right hand. Dorothea traveled with him always, and even threw herself into battle alongside him every so often. Tales of their bravery endured for generations, thanks in no small part to the operas that Dorothea wrote and composed herself.

After the war, Felix and Sylvain inherited their respective titles of Duke Fraldarius and Margrave Gautier, and set to work restoring the Kingdom. Each led a busy life, but that only seemed to enhance their friendship over the years. Each became known for making surprise visits to the estate of the other, in order to deliver the latest taunting in a friendly but relentless game of one-upmanship. It is said that, in their later years, they became so close that they passed away on the same day, as if conceding that one could not live without the other.

After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. A year later he married Mercedes, who helped complete the rebuilding effort by paying special attention to children who had lost their families during the war. When their efforts were complete, they settled into a busy life together, with Felix serving as the king's trusted retainer, and Mercedes supporting him in all things. It is said that every so often, the pair would venture out of their territory in order to visit a graveyard for fallen Imperial soldiers. There, they left flowers on a mysterious, unmarked grave, and prayed for the one who rested there.

After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. Some time later, he married Annette, and the pair earned renown together by working hard at restoring their territory to and beyond its former glory. The people adored the pair: Felix for his fierce determination, and Annette for her boundless cheer. Years later, Annette threw herself into songwriting, and with the support and encouragement of her husband, she produced melodies that remained popular for generations. The lyrics became distorted over time, however, and the original meaning of the music was lost.

After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. He married Ingrid, the daughter of Count Galatea, and the couple spared no expense in restoring both their territories, paying special attention to Galatea's desperate need for food and funds. Some years later, there was an attack on the castle town, and the duke lost the use of his sword arm from an injury sustained protecting his wife. It is said that he never regretted it, as he was only fulfilling a promise that he made to his beloved wife a long time ago.

Felix, The Shield's Successor & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
After becoming Duke Fraldarius, Felix married Lysithea, who assisted his efforts to restore both his territory and the Kingdom at large with countless insights. She became known for walking among the people, sharing with them her wisdom. After her death, Felix received a visit from a local artisan, who brought to him a cake and claimed that Lysithea had given him the recipe. Felix adored the flavor, enjoying that style of cake for the rest of his days. The people acquired a taste for it too, and Lysithea's treat became traditional in the north of Faerghus.

Felix, The Shield's Successor & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie took over the mercenary group formerly led by Jeralt. She made a name for herself as a superb mercenary and was eventually hired by the young Duke Fraldarius, Felix. He entrusted her with many important tasks, and over time, Fraldarius territory became Leonie's home base. The two spent a great deal of time drinking together, but Felix, knowing Leonie's reputation and habits, learned to extract her payment for the drinks in advance.

Felix, The Shield's Successor & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
After becoming Duke Fraldarius, Felix married Flayn, and the couple worked tirelessly to restore their territory. Thanks to Felix's dedication and Flayn's compassion, they were well loved by the people, whom they visited and spoke with frequently. Felix served as Dimitri's sworn sword throughout his reign, but when the king passed away, he gave it up in favor of a quiet life with his wife. In his later years, the sword was only used for parlor tricks, such as slicing juggled fruit out of the air—a display of skill that never failed to delight Flayn.
