Falchion (Valentia)

| “ | Thus it was that Naga bestowed Falchion upon Duma. She did so to prepare for the day our madness would drive the land to ruin, that the people might have a means to destroy us. That Falchion might become the fangs they lack... and the hope they deserve. | ” | — Mila |
|---|
Falchion (Japanese:ファルシオンFalchion), often referred to in dialogue as theDivine Falchion (Japanese:聖剣ファルシオンHoly Sword Falchion), and also known as theKingsfang (Japanese:ファルシオンFalchion), is asword introduced inFire Emblem Gaiden. It was originally given toDuma byNaga upon his departure fromArchanea, so that the people ofValentia would have a means to lay Duma andMila to rest once they degenerated into madness, a fate faced by all dragons. Duma would later give the sword to EmperorRudolf ofRigel in order to seal Mila away, setting into motion Rudolf's plan to free Valentia from the grip of the sibling gods once and for all.
History
In the ancient past,Duma, a member of theDivine Dragon clan ofArchanea, fought with the clan's ruler,Naga. Duma was defeated, and, alongside his sisterMila, chose to depart Archanea. Naga knew that Mila and Duma would one day fall victim to the process of degeneration and become but mindless shadows of their true selves, a fate shared by all dragons, and so she chose to bestow one of her fangs upon Duma, in the form of Falchion, so that Duma and Mila's people would have a means to lay them to rest once they had degenerated.[1] Duma and Mila left Archanea, eventually settling inValentia. The two fought over how the people of Valentia should be treated, with Duma believing in forcing them to become strong through hardship, and Mila believing that they should be free to pursue lives of pleasure and comfort. Mila and Duma's long dispute ended with the formation of the Divine Accord, which split Valentia into the nations that would come to be calledRigel, ruled by Duma, andZofia, ruled by Mila, with Duma retaining possession of Falchion.
Centuries later, when a pirate nation threatened Valentia, Duma formed a blood pact with a human known asRigel and granted Falchion to him. Rigel returned Falchion after the war, but his bloodline retained the ability to use Falchion.
Later,Rudolf, the emperor ofRigel, sought to end Mila and Duma's control over Valentia, having witnessed the descent of the Zofian people into hedonism, while his own people in Rigel knew only hardship and toil. He obtained Falchion from Duma, and used it to seal Mila away. Mila's corpse, with Falchion embedded in her skull, was brought to theDuma Temple, which lay deep beneath Rigel Castle. Mila, knowing that the end was near for her and Duma, chose to seal Falchion away along with herself, hoping to prevent her brother from meeting the same fate.[2] Rudolf then launched an invasion of Zofia, the next stage of his scheme.
Seeking to end the war with Rigel, theDeliverance of Zofia, led byAlm, invaded Rigel, finally clashing with Emperor Rudolf at Rigel Castle. Rudolf was defeated, and as he lay dying, he revealed the truth to Alm—that Alm was, in fact, his own son—and implored Alm to find Falchion, and use it to lay Duma, who had by then degenerated into total madness, to rest once and for all.
Deep within Duma Temple, in a room which could only be accessed by Rigelian royalty, Alm came across the petrified skull of Mila, with Falchion protruding from her forehead. However, he was confronted byCelica, who had been forced byJedah to surrender her soul to Duma and become a witch, and, now under Jedah's control, she attacked Alm. Mila spoke to Alm, and told him to grasp Falchion. As soon as Alm laid hands on the sacred blade, it freed itself from Mila's skull. Mila told Alm to trust in Falchion, and Alm thrust the blade into Celica's soulless body, seemingly killing her. Mila, however, used the last of her power to revive Celica, and spoke to the two brand-bearers, telling them to use Falchion to free Duma from his madness, and to take the future of Valentia into their own hands.
At the end of Duma Temple lay the Altar of Duma, where the fell god awaited Alm with his army of followers. Alm used the sacred blade to defeat Duma, fulfilling Rudolf's final request. Duma entrusted Valentia to the care of its people, and entered into eternal rest.
It is unknown what became of the Valentian Falchion in the millennia that followed, as it does not feature in any form, nor is it mentioned at any point, inFire Emblem Awakening.
