In the ages before the founding of theAdrestian Empire, the goddessSothis descended upon the continent of Fódlan, where she gave birth to herchildren. She and her children shared their knowledge with the people of Fódlan. Eventually, the people of Fódlan, thinking of themselves as gods, challenged Sothis. In the following war, the majority of humans was killed.[2] Under enormous effort, Sothis restored the world, and fell into a long slumber in theHoly Tomb.[3] Eventually, a thief namedNemesis, with the help ofthe survivors of the previous war, appeared inZanado, killed Sothis, and began to hunt down the remaining Children of the Goddess.Rhea, the sole survivor of this massacre, began to gather the remaining Nabateans who were scattered across Fódlan, eventually appearing in the city ofEnbarr, where she would meetWilhelm Paul Hresvelg.

Wilhelm eventually founded theAdrestian Empire with Enbarr as its capital,[4] Wilhelm eventually raised an army with the goal of unifying the continent under Adrestia's banner,[5] leading to theWar of Heroes. The War of Heroes ended with the death of Nemesis. For the following centuries, Adrestia would rule over the continent of Fódlan.

In Imperial Year 747,Loog, a descendant ofone of the 10 elites, raised an army to rebel against the empire, leading into a war that would later be known as theWar of the Eagle and Lion. Loog's forces eventually emerged victorious, and the northwestern part of Fódlan would gain independence, forming theHoly Kingdom of Faerghus in Imperial Year 751.[6] In Imperial Year 801, a rebellion broke out in the Leicester region in the northeastern part of Fódlan. Faerghus seized the opportunity and occupied Leicester.[7] Eventually, the lords of Leicester refused to accept the next archduke governing their region, and plotted to form an alliance independent from Faerghus, leading into a war that would later be known as theCrescent Moon War.[8] In Imperial Year 901, theLeicester Alliance was officially formed.[9]

Following the Alliance's foundation, dominion of Fódlan remains split across the three nations. TheChurch of Seiros continues to be the primary faith of Fódlan, and exercises great power over the continent and its people.[10]

Locations

Garreg Mach Monastery

Main article:Garreg Mach Monastery

Located in theOghma Mountains at the center of the continent is the Garreg Mach Monastery, which houses theChurch of Seiros and the Officer's Academy. At the Officer's Academy, there are three houses: TheBlack Eagles,Blue Lions, andGolden Deer. Students from all three powers attend the academy.

Adrestia

Main article:Adrestia

The Adrestian Empire in the modern day comprises the southern half of Fódlan and has endured for the past 1,000 years;[11] it once held dominion of the entire continent. The imperial bloodline in Adrestia carries theCrest of Seiros in its veins. While Adrestia has lost its absolute dominion of the mainlaind, the kingdom ofBrigid, situated on the archipelago to the west of Adrestia, is subservient to it.

Edelgard von Hresvelg, heiress to the empire, and the members of the Black Eagles house hail from here.

Faerghus

Main article:Faerghus

The Holy Kingdom of Faerghus is located in the north and is ruled by the royal family and its loyal knights.[12] Shortly before the games' events, it has annexed the bordering country ofDuscur, as well as the southern part of the neighboringSreng region.

PrinceDimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd and the members of the Blue Lions house hail from this frigid region.

Leicester

Main article:Leicester

The Leicester Alliance is a league of nobles located in the east that bend their knee to neither king nor emperor.[13] It is instead ruled by a roundtable of five great noble houses, lead by House Riegan.

Claude von Riegan, leader-to-be of the alliance, and members of the Golden Deer house hail from this region.

Surrounding nations

Main article:Countries surrounding Fódlan

Fódlan is surrounded by several other nations. Although some of them are part of the same land mass as Fódlan, they are not considered part of the continent. Others are only accessible on the sea way, and information on many of them is rare, as theChurch of Seiros prohibits official contact with outside regions.[14]
