Falchion (Japanese:ファルシオンFalcion), often referred to in dialogue as thedivine blade Falchion (Japanese:神剣ファルシオンdivine sword Falcion), is asword introduced inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is widely known and revered as the "blade of light" (Japanese:光の剣sword of light) ofArchanea, and it was forged by the Divine Dragon rulerNaga for mankind in order to better protect themselves against the threat of roguedragons. It was adopted by the kingdom ofAltea as one of their national treasures following its use against theEarth DragonMedeus by the kingdom's founder,Anri, and has in the centuries since been famously used by several of Anri's descendants:Marth the Hero-King andChrom andLucina ofYlisse. Thefirst exalt has also used the blade, though his relation to Anri is not known.
History
1100 years prior to theWar of Shadows, and 500 years prior to the formation of theKingdom of Archanea, Falchion was forged byNaga from one of her own horns, in case mankind ever needed to defend itself from dragons, and was placed in theFane of Raman along with theBinding Shield. In the year 498, during the fifth year ofMedeus's reign of terror on the world, the heroAnri traveled to theIce Dragon's Temple under the guidance ofGotoh to obtain the blade, and used it to kill Medeus and end theDolhr empire.
After the fall of Dolhr, Anri founded the kingdom ofAltea, and Falchion became one of its ancestral relics, passed down through the successive kings until, one hundred years later, it belonged toCornelius, the fourth king. In the year 602, at the onset of theWar of Shadows and Medeus's revival, Cornelius departed with the blade with the intent of fulfilling his destiny as Anri's descendant, but was killed inGra's betrayal.Gharnef took the blade and kept it safe for the majority of the war. Two years later, the blade was retrieved from Gharnef's corpse byMarth, Cornelius's son, who used it to slay Medeus for the second time.
In the year 607, in the initiating act of theWar of Heroes, the forces of the Holy Empire of Archanea invaded and conquered Altea while Prince Marth was on an expedition inGrust, and the blade was again taken by the revived Gharnef. It was not recovered until the last moments of the war where Gharnef was defeated again, and from there Marth used it to again slay Medeus, now resurrected as atrue Shadow Dragon.
As the following millennia passed, Falchion's divine blessing waned over time, and the parts which were not the blade itself began to decay and lose their durability; as a result, the sword was continually given new hilts over the ages, with the hilt coming to take an entirely different shape as a result of these repairs.[1] A thousand years after Marth, it came into the possession of thefirst exalt, who empowered it with aHoly Blood pact with Naga, also locking it his lineage and using it to defeat the Fell DragonGrima. The first exalt foundedYlisse, and his descendants—the royal family of Ylisse—continued to safeguard Falchion.
Another millennia later, this weakenedFalchion (Japanese:封剣ファルシオンSealed Sword Falcion) was inherited byChrom, Ylisse's prince, and used in his wars againstPlegia,Valm, and theGrimleal, and once againstVallite soldiers. The Falchion's full power was revived byNaga herself to facilitate Grima's defeat following his revival, restoring it to the state ofExalted Falchion (Japanese:神剣ファルシオンDivine Sword Falchion).
A second, time-displaced incarnation of Falchion, dubbed theParallel Falchion, was brought back by Chrom's daughterLucina from her disastrous future.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (anime)

In a flashback in the first episode,Prince of Aritia,Cornelius was the bearer of Falchion (rendered in the English dub asFalcion) as in the games during the Gra betrayal. He attempted to use it to fightGharnef, but failed and was slain. The anime's visual depiction of Falchion differs greatly from the games' depictions: its hilt is a steel-blue with a gold blade, and the sword crackles with electricity as Cornelius unsheaths it. During his attack on Gharnef, Cornelius uses it to parry some of theImhullu tendrils launched at him.
Kirby Super Star andKirby Super Star Ultra
In "The Great Cave Offensive", Falchion appears as one of several obtainabletreasures referencing other Nintendo franchises, worth 325,000 gold. In the English version ofSuper Star, it was just called "Sword" as it predated the international presence of theFire Emblem franchise; the name "Falchion" was restored to it inSuper Star Ultra, the game's remake.
Super Smash Bros. series

Marth wields theShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light/Mystery of the Emblem version of Falchion in his appearances as a playable character inSuper Smash Bros. Melee,Super Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. All of Marth's moves, save for hispummel andthrows, utilize Falchion to swipe or stab to attack. InSmash Bros., Falchion has asweet spot at the very tip of the blade, and blows Marth inflicts with Falchion's tip—commonly referred to as "tippers"—deal greater damage and far greater knockback than attacks with any other part of the blade. Falchion's sweet spot and length are crucial parts of Marth's gameplay, and the location of Falchion's sweetspot is in contrast toRoy, whoseBinding Blade has its sweet spot in its center (at the very base of the blade starting fromSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U), and toLucina, whoseParallel Falchion lacks a sweet spot and so deals even damage across the blade.
Falchion makes several other appearances inSuper Smash Bros. in various roles. The silhouette of theMystery version of Falchion is used by the games as theicon representing theFire Emblem series as a whole. Additionally,Chrom wields his version of Falchion fromAwakening in his appearance inRobin's Final Smash,Pair Up. Lucina also wields her Falchion variant, theParallel Falchion, in her playable appearance.
Monster Hunter: Frontier G
As part of theChrom andLucina armor set crossover promotion, theWii U version ofMonster Hunter: Frontier G features Falchion as a usable weapon. Chrom's armor set is accompanied by his basic Falchion (Japanese:封剣ファルシオンISealed Sword Falcion I), while Lucina's armor set instead gets herParallel Falchion variant (Japanese:裏剣ファルシオンIReverse Sword Falcion I); both are paired with theFire Emblem as a shield and single-handed sword set.

Marth wields Falchion in his guest appearance inCode Name: S.T.E.A.M., and Lucina wields her Parallel Falchion inCode Name: S.T.E.A.M. as well.[2]
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
Falchion isItsuki Aoi's default and weakest Carnage. Itsuki also has access to Exalted Falchion and True Falchion, two stronger Carnages also based on Falchion.
Project X Zone 2
Chrom and Lucina both use their respective Falchions inProject X Zone 2 as their main weapons, used mainly in their Dual Falchions and Fire Emblem: Awakening moves. The Exalted Falchion is also a piece of gear, raising ATK by 297 and TEC by 50.
Miitomo

As part of a collaboration coinciding with the release ofFire Emblem Heroes, an accessory based on the Falchion was made available inMiitomo. Between February 3rd and March 2nd, 2017, users had the opportunity to purchase it from the Miitomo Shop.[3]
Dragalia Lost
| This article or section is a short summary of Falchion inDragalia Lost. Dragalia Lost Wiki featuresa more in-depth article. |
The version of Falchion from the Archanean games was part of the login-bonuses that players were able to receive during the "Fire Emblem: Kindred Ties" event with more copies being rewarded from playing the event itself. It is a weapon of the Fire element and held the ability "Primed Recovery" prior to game version 2.0.
The modified version of the weapon fromFire Emblem Awakening also appears in the event, wielded by Chrom of Ylisse, though there is no weapon data for it in the game and it is unobtainable as a weapon by the player.

Trivia

- In what is presumably an oversight,Celica wields theArchanean Falchion, a weapon she cannot use in any game, in her prerendered cutscenes inWarriors.
- As part of a promotional campaign for the US release ofFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Nintendo of America commissioned the firm OlliN Sword Design to produce a life-size replica of Falchion. The sword was made with a stainless steel blade and a bronze guard, pommel and grip with embedded carnelian and lapis gems, measures 45 1/2 inches (115 centimeters), and is reportedly so heavy that raising it is a challenge.[4] It is uncertain how many were produced, although the quantity is presumably very small. One of these Falchion replicas was given away in a promotional raffle at Nintendo'sShadow Dragon booth atAnime Boston 2009,[5] and another surfaced six years later in a tweet by Nintendo of America, as part of a joke talking about theNew Nintendo 3DS.[6]
- Tyrfing, a sword appearing in games after Falchion's introduction, bears a distinct resemblance to Falchion in their original designs: its originalGenealogy of the Holy War design is very similar to theShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light andMystery of the Emblem version of Falchion.
- Falchion's title in Japanese is also the Japanese name of theLight Brand.
- The Ylissean Falchion features severalAncient Letters inscribed into its inner rim; when translated, it states "sniamer llits erutuf eht tsol si esle lla nehw". This is an English sentence spelled backwards; when reversed, it says "when all else is lost the future still remains".
- InFates, despite the weapon description's claims, Falchion is not properly character locked to Chrom; if this weapon is hacked into the player's inventory, it can be used by any unit that can use swords. However, upon returning toMy Castle, the weapon will be removed from their inventory and replaced by a placeholder item simply titled "None". This item turns back into Falchion upon revisiting theBefore Awakening DLC.

Owain: But where fang meets sinew, Falchion remains a mortal work. Even genius cannot hope to stop the turning of the great wheel! And so it is reborn with each generation; transformed, butever the same in spirit.
