Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Role

InEirika's route, Ewan first appears in Chapter 10, in which he findsTethys and asks her to let him adventure with her. He suggests to Eirika that they take a pass through the mountains toRausten, going through the village ofCaer Pelyn, where his teacherSaleh resides. In the next chapter, he guides the army through the mountains. When monsters appear in an abandoned fortress, Tethys tells him to stay behind and not fight. He obeys, but in Chapter 12, he begins to fight once someone visits a small house he is trapped in. Afterwards, he continues to fight with Eirika for the rest of the game.

InEphraim's route, Ewan first appears in Chapter 12 withSaleh, who tells him to findMarisa, part of the mercenary company. He goes to a village to find her, while Saleh goes to find theGreat Dragon. Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Beginning

In bothEirika andEphraim's routes, Ewan first becomes playable in Chapter 12. In both cases, his base level and base stats are horrendous. Since he is a trainee unit, he starts at level 1 in a trainee class, which is essentially a downgraded version of regular unpromoted classes. Ewan will have plenty of catching up to do.

Ewan dies in one round to nearly every enemy he will face, sometimes even to one attack. Therefore, he should avoid counterattacks and enemy phase combat at all costs. Fortunately for him, he uses magic, giving him 1-2 range. This flexibility lets him attack many enemies without facing counterattacks, which helps with training him. As a magical attacker, he also targets the enemy's resistance stat, which tends to be lower than their defense.

Promotion situation and choices

Ewan has a broad selection of promoted classes, thanks to him being a trainee unit. Upon reaching level 10 as aPupil, he can become aMage or aShaman. From Mage, he can become aSage or aMage Knight, and from Shaman, he can become aDruid or aSummoner.

If the player has completed both Eirika and Ephraim's routes before, there is a third option. He can alsopromote to a Pupil again, and then to a Pupil once more as his second promotion. Many players call this promotion path 'Super Pupil.' While Super Pupil can use all magic types, it is primarily a novelty. It is overshadowed by Ewan's other promoted class options, as it does not improve Ewan's constitution, cannot use staves, and magic triangle control is rarely useful.

The choice between Mage or Shaman gives Ewan access to either anima magic or dark magic. His best tomes, in either case, will beThunder orFlux respectively. The differences between these classes are minor outside of their weapon type. However, Shaman offers better statistical increases thanks to the +2 constitution bonus, letting Ewan wield heavier tomes without a speed penalty. The more critical part is Ewan's second promotion.

From Mage, Ewan can go into Mage Knight or Sage. Both offer a D-rank in staves and comparable statistical increases, but Sage also offers light magic at D-rank. In place of light magic, Mage Knight gives Ewan a mount and +2 movement instead of +1 movement, giving him 7 movement – on par withCavaliers. Sage has superior stat caps, but this is only relevant in post-game content. Mage Knight offers significantly higher mobility and mount utility, includingCanto and rescue-dropping. Its combat stats are comparable with Sage's combat stats, so Ewan does not lose combat potential by going Mage Knight instead of Sage. For these reasons, Mage Knight is the superior choice between the two unless post-game content is considered a factor. Even then, one may still value Mage Knight's movement over Sage's slightly better combat.

From Shaman, Ewan can go into Druid or Summoner. They have comparable statistical bonuses. Both grant an E-rank in staves, but Druid also offers anima magic at D-rank. Summoner, on the other hand, gives Ewan the ability to summon phantoms. The only other unit inThe Sacred Stones with access to Summoner isKnoll, and if Ewan has been trained all the way to Summoner, his stats will trump Knoll's in every aspect.

Phantoms offer unique utility. Enemies prioritize targeting them over targeting other player units, so the phantoms can save player units or bait enemies. They can distract enemy long-range weapon users, too. While they cannot use the rescue command, they still have access to take and drop commands, which can sometimes be helpful. Finally, while they only have 5 movement, they can move across any difficult terrain that is not a solid wall. This helps with their positioning and lets them bait enemies more easily.Druid's access to Anima magic is somewhat useful, but he will usually just use Dark Magic, and Summoner's summon ability has more use cases. Moreover, Summoner Ewan does not lose combat capabilities. He is still perfectly capable of fighting on par with his other class choices, but has added utility on top of that.

While Mage Knight is Ewan's best combat class overall thanks to its high movement, Summoner is the best utility class. Both classes are viable options depending on what the player wants from Ewan, but Summoner is notably better if Ewan is underleveled, and while there are many strong combat units inThe Sacred Stones, there is only one other Summoner.

Summary

Overall, Ewan has a horrible start and needs many, many levels to contribute. However, suppose the player is willing to train him. In that case, they will receive a potent 1-2 range combat unit – and if Ewan becomes a Summoner, they will also receive a unique utility unit. This makes Ewan a high-investment unit with a decent reward. Training him is by no means necessary to completeThe Sacred Stones, but it can be an amusing endeavor and has positive results.

Personality

Ewan is a cheerful, friendly child who loves to show his magic abilities. Although he is new, he can do many interesting tricks and often thinks about how to make something fun.[1] He is very laid-back and quite adventurous, such as when he insists that he go with Eirika to journey. Ewan also is very intelligent and enjoys brainteaser puzzles.[2] Additionally, he comes up with several great ideas, such as communication from great distances[3] and non-pegasus flying coaches.[4]

Ewan is the brother ofTethys, and he is linked toGerik's mercenary company, which Tethys is a part of. Therefore, he also knowsMarisa, a member of the mercenary company. He and Tethys are orphans, abandoned by their parents when young; however, Ewan does not mind, since he has gotten to meet many people because of this.[5] He often argues with Tethys that he is no longer a child, but he does greatly care for her. A few years ago,Saleh came to visit Gerik's mercenary group and met Ewan. According to Saleh, the spark in Ewan's eyes enticed Saleh to take him as a student.[6] Once, Saleh once took him on a training journey across the entire continent ofMagvel, on which Ewan was greatly mesmerized and impressed by the sights he saw.[7] Although Ewan can somtimes be careless, such as when he dropped a magic tome into a river,[8] Saleh greatly cares for Ewan and sees much talent in him, and Ewan greatly respects Saleh as a teacher.

Endings

Ewan, Enthusiastic Student
Ewan continued his studies, modeling his life after the teachings of Saleh. Eventually, his education branched off into different paths. His insatiable curiosity led him on a trip to explore the world.

Saleh and Ewan
Master and student returned to Caer Pelyn to study in peace. Ewan worked hard, and in time, his power grew to rival Saleh's. As equals, the two continued their studies together and expanded their knowledge ever more.

Ewan and Amelia
After the war, Ewan and Amelia set out, as promised, on a trip around the world. Their deeds along the way made small legends in the regions they visited. In time, Amelia gave birth to a daughter, and they settled down.

Trivia

  • Ewan is one of the very few characters in theFire Emblem series who can lose a weapon level when he promotes: if the player promotes Ewan from Pupil to Shaman, he loses his Anima rank.
  • In his B support with Amelia, in the Japanese version Ewan sees under Amelia's skirt. The English version changed this line so Ewan instead says that Amelia's outfit is similar to Princess Eirika's.
