Emblems (Japanese:紋章士Emblem person) are a spiritual being andclass introduced inFire Emblem Engage. They are the spirits of powerful beings from other worlds—the protagonists and important characters in theFire Emblem series—that reside inEmblem Rings. Emblems serve as the main driving force behind the plot ofEngage, and provide a myriad of benefits to any who wears their rings. During certain paralogue chapters, Emblems will serve asbosses to testAlear and their army in order to strengthen the bonds between them. Each Emblem has a unique personal class with its own distinct set of stats, weapons, and unit types, though all fall under the name "Emblem".
While normally a non-playable class, the player can temporarily take control of an Emblem as one of many possible summonable units viaVeronica'sengage attack,Summon Hero.

Characteristics
Emblems are incorporeal spirits resembling heroes from other worlds. Notably, this is simply a resemblance―Emblems are separate individuals from the people they resemble. In spite of this, Emblems have the memories and abilities of the person they were "in life".[1] However, these memories do not extend to the person's full life, instead only including what is contained within that person's myth.[2] For some Emblems, these memories may even include multiple contradictory paths,[3] indicating that Emblems are a combination of all iterations of a specific person's myth while being their own individuals.[4]
They are bound to jewelry, with the two known types being either rings or bracelets. Emblems are incapable of straying from their ring or bracelet, though they can move freely on theSomniel thanks to the power of theDivine Dragon.[5]
When worn, the spirits can be summoned through prayer or incantation by select Divine Dragons orFell Dragons.[6] Once summoned, Emblems bestow their power and abilities onto the person with whom they are synced. The most notable ability when synced isengaging. In this state, the Emblem and synced individual become one. The engaged individual has direct access to abilities andEngage weapons of the Emblem for a limited time. By bonding with a specific Emblem, the effects of engaging can be increased.
Depending on the power and intent of the dragon, Emblems may be summoned in their regular form or as Dark Emblems. Emblems also emit a glow in either blue or red as regular or Dark Emblems respectively.[7] Additionally, Emblems typically float a short distance above the ground.
As spirits, Emblems are largely incapable of affecting the physical world.[8] They cannot eat, yet retain a sense of smell.[9] They can only physically affect the world when synchronized by aiding the synced individual in battle, as well as sparring inside the Somniel's arena. Emblems are also incapable of changing their clothes[10] or weapons.[11] Though their forms have no sense of touch, Emblems seem to feel through their rings or bracelets in a limited capacity, as they feel bothered by both excessive grime as on as well as excessive polishing of their rings.[12]
Because Emblems are tethered to their home world, Emblems are vulnerable to distortions in space-time. If a world is destabilized, such as through portals to other worlds, the Emblems, without a physical form, become incapable of holding themselves together and may disappear altogether.[13] A typical Emblem cannot survive the travel from one world to another, and doing so for any extended period of time requires extreme power.[14]
When summoned toAskr byKiran inFire Emblem Heroes, Emblems gain their own physical forms, though they still glow blue and float.[15] Despite this, the Emblems feel no physical needs such as hunger.[16]
Summoning
Emblems can be summoned through two methods: prayers, and invocations.[6] Prayers are used by Divine Dragons to informally request an Emblem's aid. When summoned this way, the Emblem retain their free will. Prayer is fundamentally based on cooperation and the bond between the dragon and Emblem.[17]Lumera is the only dragon shown using this method.
Invocations are favored by Fell Dragons. Using an incantation, an Emblem can be subjugated, appearing as a Dark Emblem without free will. Despite using invocations,Alear can summon Emblems in their full, uncorrupted state, combining both summoning methods.[17] Invocations differ per Emblem. For Fell Dragons, an Emblem's incantation simply comes to mind upon obtaining an Emblem's ring. This ability does not extend to Emblems from other worlds, in which case the dragon is incapable of awakening a foreign Emblem by themself.[18]
However, not all Fell and Divine Dragons are inherently capable of summoning Emblems. This ability seems to vary by birth, asVeyle andNel cannot summon Emblems at all.
Dark Emblems
Dark Emblems are Emblems summoned using the power of a Fell Dragon. Dark Emblems possess no free will and cannot communicate.[17] They also cannot engage, instead being in a state referred to as Dark Sync. In this state, the synced individual does not receive the usual benefits of engaging, but still has access to both engage weapons andEngage attacks. Dark Emblems can be cleansed into their original state using the power of a Divine Dragon, or put to sleep by Fell Dragons like Nel.[19] After being cleansed, the Emblem only retains vague and fuzzy memories of their time as a Dark Emblem.[20] The two dragons shown to summon Dark Emblems areSombron and the Alear of a thousand years past.
Rafal is capable of summoning Emblems in something of an inbetween state. These Emblems, referred to as Fallen Emblems by Nel, still cannot defy the one they are synchronized with, though they retain some measure of awareness and the capability to speak.[19]
Miracle of the Emblems
Once every thousand years, the Emblems can gather together to grant immense power. This power can wipe out entire people, or open portals to other worlds. However, the miracle of the Emblems can be granted anytime, only when all twelve Emblems are in agreement. Due to the power required, the miracle can only be performed once.[21]
Through the miracle, the Emblems can induct someone into their ranks, turning that person into a new Emblem. With this method, someone can even be brought back from the dead. By combining the Emblems' power, a person's spirit is bound to a ring, which becomes their Emblem Ring.[22]
The miracle was first granted to Alear, making them the 13th Emblem, referred to as the Fire Emblem.

Alear: I had no idea. I wish I had realized... But if the portal is doing this, then it's only temporary, right? After we close it, you and the other Emblems will recover.
Marth: ... The moment the portal closes, there will be a great distortion. We will not be able to withstand it.
