— Opening narration ofChapter 11E,Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade

TheEight Legends orEight Generals (Japanese:八神将Eight Divine Generals) were eight powerfulhuman warriors who fought inthe Scouring inElibe, leading the forces of mankind in banishing thedragon race from the face of the continent.

Overview

Late in the conflict, when thelegendary weapons were created to efficiently combat thedragons, eight of the warriors judged to be the most powerful in the human forces were chosen to wield them; these eight came to be known as the "Eight Generals" or "Eight Legends".[1] Led byHartmut, the Generals travelled to theDragon Sanctuary in what would later become Bern and launched an assault upon it and its dragon occupants, wielding the legendary weapons. In this battle, the immense power of the legendary weapons and of the dragons reacted to each other and caused theEnding Winter, forcing the dragons to takemanakete form. Human legends would later falsely claim that the Winter was caused by dragons alone, and that the Generals and the legendary weapons fixed it.[2]

Even with the dragons forced into the weaker forms and rendered helpless, the Generals nonetheless pressed the assault, mercilessly slaughtering the manaketes;Jahn was among these manaketes and escaped with only a deep wound inflicted by one of the Generals.[3] When they ventured into the Sanctuary, they foundIdunn in manakete form, who transformed into herdemon dragon form and engaged them in battle; she was struck down by Hartmut wielding theBinding Blade, which reacted to Hartmut's hesitance and failed to kill her. Afterward, at Hartmut's insistence, the Generals created a sanctuary in which to seal her away using the Binding Blade andFire Emblem.

With the war over, the Generals went their separate ways in the now-peaceful Elibe. Most of them formed a new nation in some corner of the continent, and they all enshrined their legendary weapons in a hidden location to attempt to prevent their immense power from being misused;Bramimond placed a powerful magical seal upon all of the weapons from his new home, theShrine of Seals, preventing their use without him lifting the seal. By980 years later, Bramimond andAthos were the only Generals still alive; Athos assisted theLycian lordsEliwood,Hector andLyn in fightingNergal, a former friend of Athos who intended to summon and control dragons for his own personal use, and to this end persuaded Bramimond to lift the seal upon the legendary weapons so they could be used against Nergal. After Nergal's death and that of the three dragons he managed to summon, Athos himself died from exhaustion, and Bramimond also passed within twenty years.

    Roy: That much I know...
Jahn: The strongest human warriors were chosen to wield their newly crafted weapons.

  2. "Jahn: They came and attacked this sanctuary. However, the immense power of the weapons clashing with our own power... It caused something none of us had anticipated.
    Roy: What happened?
Jahn: The laws of nature started to collapse. Snow began to fall in summer. Stars shone in the middle of day...
Roy: You mean it caused the Ending Winter? I thought it occurred because the dragons released vast amounts of energy...
Jahn: Is that how your legends go?
Roy: The power of the legendary weapons were used to restore order to nature. That's what I learned.
Jahn: So in other words, we were the cause of everything bad that happened. How typical of you humans. But the truth is as I said.
" —Jahn andRoy,Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
  3. "Jahn: When the order of nature collapsed, we dragons suffered the most. With nature weakened, we could not maintain our dragon forms. And so, we sealed our power into gemstones and took human form.
    Roy: The dragonstones...
Jahn: Yes. We were utterly powerless against the humans. In human form, we were even more feeble than the humans themselves. The humans took the opportunity to slaughter us.
Roy: Why did you choose the form of humans? Why not some other shape?
Jahn: In the new order of nature, the human form required the least energy to transform into. The Eight Legends mercilessly crushed us as we were helpless in our human form. I too suffered deep wounds.
