Edain
| ||||||||||||||||
|
| “ | No, I wish to remain here. Injuries are inevitable in war. As a humble servant to the gods, it is my duty to stay here and aid your wounded. | ” | — Edain, toSigurd |
|---|
Edain (Japanese:エーディンAdean) is a nun and noblewoman fromGrannvale'sYngvi dukedom, a descendant of the CrusaderUllr, the daughter of LordLing and the sister ofBrigid andAndrey. While the bulk of Grannvale's army was off to war inIsaach,Verdane launched a small-scale invasion, successfully seizing Castle Yngvi and kidnapping Edain, with the kingdom's PrinceMunnir taking her back to Verdane. While her childhood friendSigurd led his few remaining knights into Verdane to rescue her, she was released from their imprisonment by PrinceJamke to travel to meet up with Sigurd's forces, with which she remains throughout Sigurd's troubles with Grannvale until theBattle of Belhalla, which she survived.
Biography
Despite their determination to protect Edain when the forces of Verdane surrounded Castle Yngvi,Midir and the other Yngvi knights fell to PrinceMunnir and his army. Munnir took Edain with him back to Yngvi, mentioning to his subordinateGerrard that he intended to marry her. Edain was imprisoned in Castle Marpha, Munnir's castle, awaiting his attention following the suppression of the invadingChalphy forces; during her imprisonment, she metDeirdre and told her about Sigurd.[2] PrinceJamke came to Marpha to free her, along with the arrested thiefDew at her request; he instructed the two to flee while he returned to the capital to attempt to persuade his father, KingBatu, to stop the conflict.[3]
Upon reuniting with Sigurd, she refused his request to head back to Yngvi, determined to help others with her healing abilities. She mentioned that she was motivated to join the nunnery to help her find her lost twin sisterBrigid and give her, the major-blooded descendant ofUllr, theYewfelle to wield. The two did indeed eventually reuniteduring the fight with the pirates of Orgahil which Brigid had led until very recently; while Brigid initially disbelieved her, Edain confirmed her identity by giving her the Yewfelle and having her successfully attempt to use it.[4]
Edain was one of the few known survivors of theBattle of Belhalla. At some point after the battle, she travelled toTirnanog, a village inIsaach, and became an abbess at its abbey.[5] There, she helpedOifey andShannan raiseSeliph,Larcei,Scáthach andDiarmuid, acting as a surrogate mother to the four; she also had her own children,Lana andLester.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
As a unit
Edain joins the army in Chapter 1 of the first generation. Her only weapon rank is a B in staves, so while her base magic is high and her base stats outside of HP and defense are decent for her joining time, she cannot fight until promotion. With a B rank in staves, she can use most staves in the game, such asWarp andReturn. After promotion, Edain can use every staff exceptValkyrie. Edain's primary issue is her very low movement; she can never keep up with the mounted units dominatingGenealogy of the Holy War, which makes it difficult for her to contribute.
By repeatedly using Warp or Return to send a unit to the home castle while at the home castle, Edain can gainexperience very quickly, and can reliably reach level 20 by the end ofChapter 2. Edain's promotion gives her a C rank in fire, thunder and wind magic, allowing her to fight; however, she has no skills and cannot use high-rank tomes, making her combat lackluster. Edain's promotion also increases her staff rank to A, but does not increase her movement, so she will continue to fall behind.
Given her low movement, Edain's most significant use is to move units around the map with Warp. She will not be able to keep up with cavalry, and her magic is so high that it's overkill for herMend staff, as it will likely fully heal an ally due to how it works in this game, so it's best to give it toEthlyn, who could make more use of it with her higher movement, and just give her Ethlyn'sHeal staff, as she will make better use of it to put an ally back into shape compared to when Ethlyn uses it; she can use thePhysic staff, but 10-range will likely not be enough later in a chapter, considering how low her movement is. If the player chooses to play slowly, Edain will be able to contribute much more, but in fast playthroughs, her usefulness is extremely limited. As such, it may be best to leave Edain inside the home castle so she can gain experience and have some use by Warping units who enter it.
As a mother
Edain's most notable pairing options areMidir,Jamke,Claud, andAzelle. Midir and Jamke will strengthenLester at the cost of weakeningLana, while the other two cripple Lester's offense for Lana's magic and staff utility. Midir and Jamke can both pass down bows andAccost to Lester, while Midir passes downFollow-Up and better skill and speed growths and Jamke passes downAdept and better growths in strength, HP, and luck. As Lester will not have Follow-Up without inheriting it or theFollow-Up Ring, Midir will sire a stronger Lester, and as strong as Adept is, it does not stack with the Brave Bow, which will be Lester's main weapon with either pairing. The downside to Midir is that Edain's inferior movement means he will have to stay away from combat to build love points with her; Jamke does not have this problem, as he has much closer movement to Edain.
Claud and Azelle significantly limit Lester's combat potential, but in return provide much earlier access toRescue, which is otherwise inaccessible untilChapter 10. Rescue can make traversingGenealogy's large maps much faster; additionally, there isa glitch involving Rescue that allows a unit to have infinite turns. Azelle provides the Rescue staff inChapter 4, but it cannot be inherited; Claud provides Rescue inChapter 5 (which in faster playthroughs can only be obtained by the end of the chapter), but a Lana fathered by Claud will have a high enough staff rank to inherit the Rescue staff. Claud also gives Lana the ability to useFortify.

Edain: Brigid, listen well. I am your twin sister! We lost you to pirates years ago, when you were just five years old. I've searched for you for years. I never lost hope that we would meet again.
Brigid: This is all so sudden... No. Weird feelings like this aren't enough! I need proof!
Edain: Proof, you say? Here. Draw this bow.
