Draug (Japanese:ドーガDohga) is aknight ofAltea in the service ofMarth. He is playable in four games—Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light,Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem,Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, andFire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem—and is, not counting prologues, playable from the beginning of all four games.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Draug is one of the Altean soldiers who fled to Talys alongside Prince Marth after their country was defeated by Dolhr and Gra. Some years later, Talys is attacked and its princess goes to Marth for help; Draug, following his lord's orders, enters the battlefield with his fellow soldiers. Once they have rescued the king of Talys and Marth starts his campaign against Dolhr, Draug follows Marth for the rest of the war.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Draug is immediately available on Chapter 1, meaning his availability is perfect. Within the first few chapters, Draug is able to double the axe wielding enemies if he is wielding anIron Sword, which allows him to be a strong combat unit, albeit he will often not be able to kill enemies, meaning other units will have to finish them off. In the long term however, Draug is not a very viable unit. His low growths mean there is not much room for him to grow, especially in defense, the most important stat for his class. He is also held back significantly by his class. Outside of the usual issues of low movement that all armor knights struggle with, in this game, armor knights are not able to promote. This greatly limits Draug's long term contributions, as he will be unable to gain promotion bonuses, or reset his level back to 1. A lack of promotion and low growths means that although he can be useful for the game's first few chapters, he should not be used beyond that point unless the player is particularly fond of him.

Analysis
Draug joins at a fairly high level, and is in a class that can use thechapter 3Knight Crest, making him potentially one of the player's first promoted units, and is one weapon level from using aSilver Lance. Unfortunately, General is a heavily flawed class inMystery of the Emblem: it has only 5 move which is poor indoors where the best classes have 7 and even the dismountedKnight class has 6 movement, and awful outdoors whereDracoknights andPaladins have 10 movement. It is also incapable of crossing rivers or mountains and is locked to lances which are the weakest weapon type due to their lower accuracy, higher weight, and limited effective options for killing bulkier enemies.
Draug himself also has unimpressive stats, with his mediocre base hp and poor growth rates making his hit-taking ability less than stellar. He also has a low strength growth, and his low base means that even after promoting he will likely not be fast enough to double 0 AS enemies (he averages 8-9 speed and theSilver Lance has 7 weight). TheAstral shards can be used to help his stat issues, though apart from anyone else being capable of doing this, Draug's best training maps come early on before the player gets access to them. Draug is far from unsalvageable if the player so desires, but this is more to do with the environment ofMystery of the Emblem than Draug.
Draug does come with decent enough base stats to help out in some of the early chapters. He has enough defense to take multiple hits from enemy Dracoknights, though due to his poor luck he has a 4% crit chance against them, and while he can survive a critical hit he will die to a regular hit and a critical hit.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
During Marth's escape from the fall of Altea, Draug prepared a ship so as to allow Marth and his knights to escape toTalys by sea. Optionally, while doing so he may encounterNorne and lead her to accompany Marth to Talys. From here, his role is the same as inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.
ShouldJagen be killed or used as thedecoy prior to the end ofPrologue IV, Draug will assume Jagen's role in the lead-up to the start ofchapter 1.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Draug is an armor knight available for the entire game. His standout attributes are his high defense (most of which comes from his Armor Knight base), decent strength and D rank in lances, which allows him to useSteel Lances andJavelins at base level. However, his speed is very low and he will frequently get doubled, especially on higher difficulties.
The ability to use Javelins can come in handy during the early chapters, particularly when some enemies need to be weakened—although Draug's base skill is low, so his accuracy can leave something to be desired. He also has weapon triangle advantage over the thieves who show up in the early chapters, which can allow him to weaken them for other units to kill. Sometimes, his high defense can allow him to tank hits other units cannot, which can once again be helpful, particularly if you are playing on a higher difficulty and need to take a map more slowly. However, this utility is essentially all that Draug has going for him. In his base class, Draug is very slow and will not only have one of the lowest movements among your units, but he will also get doubled by nearly every enemy who attacks him. This will eventually make him much less tanky than he appears, because he will take damage twice as many times as some of your other units.
Notably, this problem can be fixed with reclassing once it becomes available. Draug's personal defense base is low, but his personal speed base is actually very high. If he is reclassed to a class such asHunter, he will suddenly become fast, but fragile. This can allow him to contribute for some more time by chipping from a distance without fear of getting doubled, at least most of the time. However, doing this also removes the advantage of having a D rank in lances—instead, he will have an E rank in bows, which is only sufficient to use anIron Bow. As such, his post-reclassing utility is also very limited.
Overall, Draug has some utility in the early game, thanks to his strengths as an armor knight with D lances. However, he can only be utilized situationally and has little to no long-term potential. Reclassing him can fix some of his problems, but it also introduces new problems. Draug will always be handicapped in some way in comparison to many units better than him, and as such, he is typically benched after the earlygame has finished.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Draug starts as an Armor Knight. As expected, this gives him high bulk but low speed and movement. Draug’s bulk as an Armor Knight can be somewhat useful if he is utilized in the Prologue. However, as soon as the Prologue ends, Draug should immediately be reclassed into any other non-magic class. In doing so, he turns into a genuinely great unit who scales very well into the rest of the game.
Draug is a very versatile unit and can do well as a Cavalier/Dracoknight, Pirate/Berserker, or Hunter/Horseman. He has good bases and growths across all of these classes. Shifting to any of these classes flips Draug’s original role on its head; he becomes a speedy glass cannon who cannot take many hits, but who can deal plenty of damage. As a Cavalier/Dracoknight, Draug gets to utilize his D rank in Lances and dramatically boosts his movement right out of the gate. Going the Pirate/Berserker or Hunter/Horseman route will let Draug take full advantage of his high speed, though he will have to start with E ranks in either Axes or Bows. Still, he can raise these ranks with relative ease.
Overall, Draug is excellent and will serve the player well throughout the game, so long as he escapes the Armor Knight class as soon as possible.
