I haven't given up, Nanna. Lord Lewyn said Mother was still alive. We can search for her together when the war is finally over. So... don't cry anymore, OK?
— Diarmuid

Diarmuid (Japanese:デルムッドDelmud) is a prince of theAgustrian state ofNordion, and the eldest child of its princessLachesis; his father's identity is unknown, but through his possession of theBeo's Sword is hinted to be the mercenaryBeowolf. He was separated from his mother and raised in theIsaachian village ofTirnanog in the aftermath of theBattle of Belhalla, alongsideSeliph ofChalphy and under the care ofOifey andShannan. He was later one of the first members of Seliph's liberation army in Grann 777.

Canonically as defined byThracia 776, Diarmuid is most likely Beowolf's son; however, in the gameplay ofGenealogy of the Holy War, Diarmuid's father can be chosen just like any other character, and the game is non-specific about his father. If Lachesis was not married in the course of the first generation, Diarmuid'srole is filled byTristan.

Biography

Diarmuid andLester* were on a scouting mission outside of Isaach withOifey when the Dozel army launched an assault on Tirnanog, but arrived early on in the battle to assist Seliph in combating the occupation.

At the climax of theFriege siege of the newly-reclaimedLeonster Castle, Diarmuid arrived with Seliph's army to launch a counterattack against the Friege army and assistLeif's beleaguered army. Diarmuid was sent into the castle as a messenger to Leif, entrusting to him a letter stating Seliph's plan to assaultUlster, and subsequently escorted Leif to meet with Seliph and reunited with Nanna. After Leif and Seliph's meeting concluded, Diarmuid transferred into Leif's army to continue to aid Nanna.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Diarmuid is a level 3Free Knight who joins three turns into the first chapter ofGenealogy's second generation. AsLachesis's child, he inheritsCharm, which grants a +10hit andavoid to all nearby allies, granting him a useful supportive utility. The skill can be stacked with his sisterNanna for up to +20 hit and avoid to allies;Lene's substitute,Laylea, also has the skill as well, and can stack hers alongside the siblings for +30 hit/avoid. He is also mounted, giving him versatile mobility at a time when most of your main fighters are footlocked, and his promotion gives huge bonuses to skill and speed. Diarmuid's primary disadvantage is that he does not have innateFollow-Up, as the one that Lachesis can eventually get is a class skill and not a personal one that can be inherited, which prevents him from doubling enemies slower than him. And while he can still gain the ability to attack twice once he getsAdept upon promotion, it's not as reliable as the more consistent Follow-Up skill. Even when he has a pairing that gives him Follow-Up, he has poor 1-2 range with his (typically) low magic, and his stats in general are mediocre, so he will fall behind.

For choices of fathers, Diarmuid would highly prefer one that has Follow-Up (as a personal skill) to pass down to him, so that his long-term combat can remain strong and reliable throughout the rest of the game without needing to rely on theFollow-Up Ring. He also wants to be able to inherit a strong sword, as he will otherwise likely be stuck with a weakIron Sword.Beowolf is the best option, as he accomplishes that, along with giving him hefty a boost to his HP growth, an amazing 80% strength growth, two useful offensive skills in Follow-Up andAccost, and can reliably acquire swords to pass down to him, while also passing down solid growths all-around. The other potential fathers with Follow-Up as a personal skill all have their varying benefits and demerits as Diarmuid's father as well.Midir cannot pass downbows and is generally considered a mediocre choice for most children.Finn givesMiracle, but will be forced to relinquish all of his belongings (including hislances, which Diarmuid cannot use) to his son and will be left with only a singleIron Lance when he reappears inChapter 7, which will significantly cripple his ability to defendLeif and Nanna during the early stages of the chapter.Alec givesNihil, removing Diarmuid's vulnerability toHorseslayers, but has no Holy Blood or any other useful skills to pass down.Azelle gives him a decent enoughmagic growth to put magic swords to decent use, but while Diarmuid will have decent strength and magic with Azelle as a father, he will not have enough to reliably one-round.

If the player does not want to give Diarmuid Follow-Up in favor of other useful skills, there are some viable options.Lex givesParagon, allowing Diarmuid and Nanna to reach their promotion faster and gives both children tanky growths.Dew givesBargain, letting the two children buy stuff and repair weapons at shops at half price, though it should be noted that Diarmuid and Nanna will not get Dew'sSol, as the skill is restricted to infantry sword users.Jamke givesAccost and earlyAdept as unreliable replacements for Follow-Up, though with theFollow-Up Ring, Diarmuid becomes comparable to Beowolf if Jamke killedChagall for hisSilver Blade.

Overall, Diarmuid has a lot of strength and can support allies well, but he needs Follow-Up to be viable, and he is usually eclipsed in power by other units in the generation.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Diarmuid is far from overpowered, but he is a decent contributor. His best combat trait is his FCM of 5, letting him guarantee a crit on the second attack with the right weapon. Diarmuid has an A-rank in swords both indoors and outdoors, and his dismount penalties are negligible outside of movement, so he can be useful on any map. He joins with a powerful personal sword calledBeo's Sword, which has high might, high crit, and a high number of uses. Fergus can use it as well, but if Fergus is dead or untrained, Diarmuid is the only candidate for using it. The weapon also grants its wielderVantage andWrath, but since Vantage negates Wrath, the sword might as well only grant Vantage.

Diarmuid is an acceptable deployment choice for every map after he joins, and can even contribute in endgame; he can also use theBragi Sword againstRaydrik. Aside from combat contributions, Diarmuid hasCharm, increasing the hit and avoid of allied units within three spaces of him by 10%. This means he can be helpful even if he never fights an enemy. His sisterNanna also has Charm, her bonus stacks with his and they have a mutual support. That said, Diarmuid is still predominantly a filler combat unit.
