Dew (Japanese:デューDew) was a thief fromVerdane. He was captured and arrested by Verdane's PrinceMunnir and imprisoned in Marpha Castle, but was freed by PrinceJamke along withEdain and joinedSigurd's army in fighting in Verdane,Agustria and beyond until his presumed demise in theBattle of Belhalla.
Biography
When Jamke came to Marpha Castle to free Edain from imprisonment, she implored him to release Dew too, and in exchange he promised Edain that he was done with his thievery.[1] Jamke let the two free outside Marpha before leaving to confronthis father, and Dew and Edain fled the area to join up with Sigurd's army as it invaded Verdane to rescue Edain.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
As a unit
Thief utility inGenealogy of the Holy War is unlike any other game in the series. Thieves are typically intended to open doors and chests, but doors and chests do not exist inGenealogy. However, thieves inGenealogy canSteal money from enemies by damaging them. They can also freely give their money to other characters using the "Give gold" command. Since Dew is the only thief available for generation 1, he has utility unlike any other unit. He also has well-balanced growths that are solid for the first generation, with 40% growths on every stats apart from HP sans magic and resistance which are 10%.
Dew's combat before promotion is very poor, because his base stats are low except for his high speed and luck. He cannot use strong weapons to circumvent low bases, because his sword rank is only C. Powerful swords like theSilver Sword and theBrave Sword are B-rank or A-rank. For that reason, he will only deal damage in the single digits, and since he has no real offensive skills, he will never kill enemies on his own. He also cannot clear the arena before promotion, since most opponents are too difficult for him to face.
However, to steal money from enemies, Dew only needs to deal damage to them—even one point of damage is enough. All units deal a minimum of 1 damage inGenealogy regardless of the enemy's defenses, so as long as Dew hits, he will take the money. Swords being the most accurate melee weapon type in the game also helps. Once Dew gets hit, he should retreat from battle or receive immediate healing. His avoid is good and his defenses are sufficient to survive a hit, but dodging is unreliable. He has theSol skill, which heals him if it activates, but he deals so little damage it rarely helps him survive, and his base skill is not good either. InChapter 3, if Dew waits in front of theTower of Bragi, he will receive aWind Sword. While his magic stat is middling, he can typically do more damage against most physically-oriented enemies by hitting on their weaker resistance stat via the 14 might granted by ranged magic sword attacks. Additionally, having any 2-range attack at all allows him to safely steal money from enemies without fear of a counterattack, letting him get away with attacking certain enemies he wouldn't otherwise if he fought up close at 1-range. However, as with most weapons, other units are capable of using it as well.
Dew's strengths definitely lie in exclusive utility. No other first-generation unit can freely give gold to other units. The primary use of this is to give money to units who cannot or struggle to clear the arena, such as healers, since their income is low without visiting villages. Thanks to Dew, they can buy important items like theParagon Ring and repair expensive items like theWarp staff.
Dew is also the only first-generation unit with theBargain skill. Bargain lowers the cost of purchasing items by half, allowing Dew to buy important items like the aforementionedParagon Ring for much less gold than other units. This makes it easier to raise his level and reach his promotion. He also passes the skill down to his children, which makes him worth pairing. Without pairing Dew, the player will not haveBargain in the second generation. He can also use it to buy weapons or rings to manipulate the amount of money he gives without any net loss.
Because of how poorly he fares in combat, getting Dew to promotion can be very difficult without taking advantage of theParagon Ring. However, Dew's promotion is among the best in the game. It gives himFollow-Up, allowing him to take advantage of his high speed and double enemies. It also provides significant statistical bonuses across the board, including a point of movement. Finally, it increases his sword rank to A, letting him use every sword, excluding Holy Weapons. Coupled with Dew's solid growths for a first-generation unit, Dew can be a satisfactory combat unit after promotion, especially while using powerful swords, though he is still going to lag behind mounted units.
As a father
Dew is a good father for children who need to buy expensive items, because passing down Bargain allows them to buy items for half price. He also has good growths across the board despite his lack of Holy Blood, which can help his future children. He is a frequent choice forBrigid, becausePatty strongly benefits from having Bargain: Thieves struggle to gain experience, and a unit with Bargain can buy the Paragon Ring much more easily. Dew is also a good husband forSilvia in a ranked environment, becauseLene andCoirpre both need the Paragon Ring to speed up their experience gain. Lene is a Dancer, so she never faces combat and struggles to gain experience, while Coirpre is a late-joining staff unit, so he has less time to level up; Lene may also want to buy theKnight Ring, depending on who inherited it, so having Bargain helps with that as well.
It should be noted that pairing upLex gives his children theParagon skill, which is more convenient than buying the Paragon Ring with Bargain. For that reason, Dew should not be considered a replacement for Lex; however, he still provides a way to give more units accelerated experience gain, and that is worthwhile, especially for ranked runs.
Dew can additionally pass Sol to any infantry sword-wielding children—i.e.Larcei,Scáthach,Lene, andPatty. As Lene and Patty generally have poor combat and focus on non-combat utility, Sol is best utilized by Larcei and Scáthach. However, while they have high skill to activate Sol often and Scáthach can inherit Dew's swords, activations of Astra prevent activations of Sol, Lex andArden provide a more meaningful survivability boost than Sol, and Lex provides Paragon outright rather than making the Paragon Band easier to access.

Personality
Dew was something of a fast talker with a positive attitude. He thoroughly enjoyed his practice as a thief, both the actual crimes and the subsequent spoils,[2] but still tried to cover it up when asked (if not particularly well).[3] Even though he promised Edain that he would cease his thievery after being released from Marpha, he persisted in doing so anyway, if in a manner somewhat shy of letting her know of it. In the prelude to theBattle of Belhalla, he could sense the somber attitude everyone else in the army bore as they fought, and while he himself was marginally less somber about it he nonetheless felt the need to make amends with Jamke before the end.[4]

This is Dew, a thief from the continent of Jugdral! He keeps the mood lively with his fast-talking charm. | Having been caught stealing in the kingdom of Verdane, Dew encountered Edain, a lady of Yngvi, during his captivity in the castle's dungeon. | And when Jamke, the third prince of Verdane, came to help Edain escape, Dew was allowed to flee with her—after vowing to give up thievery. | Dew then joined Sigurd's army, where he aided his allies by using his thieving skills to access locked chests on the battlefield.[a] I guess he didn't have to give up thievery, after all... | ||||||||||
