TheDevil Axe (Japanese:デビルアクスDevil Axe) is a rareaxe that was introduced inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. It is a high-risk, high-reward weapon: it has exceptionally highraw power compared to other axes, but it has a chance of backfiring and damaging its wielder instead of the target. If it backfires, the wielder suffers the same amount of damage that would have been dealt to the target had the attack not backfired, except in three games: InFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon andFire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, the backfire damage is calculated as if the user attacked themselves, and inThree Houses, instead of having a random chance of backfiring, it deals a fixed 10 damage to the user after every round of combat that it is used in. The weapon also has poor hit and high weight, except in the DS games where it is instead very accurate, and inShadow Dragon only moderately heavy.
Despite the danger it poses to anybody who would use it, the Devil Axe has some advantages. In addition to its exceptional might, it has a low requiredweapon level which lets almost any axe user immediately use it, and inThe Blazing Blade andThe Sacred Stones, using it awards a very high amount ofweapon experience to increase axe ranks. The risk of having it backfire is mitigated by its wielder'sluck stat, although there is always a minimum 1% chance that it will backfire regardless of the user's luck. Additionally, inEchoes: Shadows of Valentia itheals its user when they defeat an enemy, although since axes are usable only by enemies in that game, this does not help the player.

Trivia
- The unused Devil Axe inPath of Radiance is unusual in that it lacks a 3D model for units to wield in battle scenes. If it is hacked into the game, the missing model causes its user to freeze up in a bind pose (pictured below withBoyd), and the game crashes as a result.
- InShadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and its remakes, the villager inChapter 3 who givesMarth the Devil Axe describes its backfiring effect as consuming the blood and flesh of its user.[2]
