This article is about daggers and knives as a weapon type. For the specific weapons, seeDagger (weapon) andKnife (weapon). For the skill permitting their use, seeKnife (skill).
Jakob attacking with numerous daggers inFire Emblem Cipher.

Thedagger (Japanese:暗器concealed weapon) orknife (Japanese:短剣dagger) is aweapon type which was introduced inFire Emblem: Path of Radiance and is subsequently present in it,Radiant Dawn,Fates, andEngage. They are the least powerful weapon type in all the games they appear in saveEngage, wherearts are generally weaker, but tend to have goodaccuracy. InPath of Radiance andRadiant Dawn, they are by far the mostlightweight weapons. Additionally, inFates, every dagger has the ability to inflictstat reductions on enemies, and inEngage they allpoison enemies.

Daggers and knives often have enhancedrange, being able to attack both at melee range and at a distance. All knives inPath of Radiance are melee range only, while the knives ofRadiant Dawn andEngage are divided into two varieties, daggers (melee only) and throwing knives (enhanced range). InFates, all daggers have enhanced range.

InPath of Radiance, knives lacked an actualweapon level of their own, instead having their use locked to classes possessing theKnife skill and thus allowing any such unit to use any knife; they gained a proper weapon level and according rank scaling inRadiant Dawn.

InFire Emblem Fates, theirHoshidan counterpart is called theshuriken (Japanese:手裏剣shuriken). They are almost exactly the same as daggers and share a weapon level, differentiated by the effect that, when equipped, they increase the wielder's speed by 2, and, on average, they have lower hit rate.

In the Tellius games, knives do not interact with the weapon triangle, and are neutrally effective against all weapon types. InFates, daggers, along with shuriken, occupy the blue weapons niche in the weapon triangle alongsidelances and naginata, beating out red weapons (swords/katana andtomes/scrolls) but losing out to green weapons (axes/clubs andbows/yumi). InEngage, daggers, along with bows and tomes, suffer a one-sided disadvantage againstarts, having no advantage over any weapon type.

Overview

Fates debuff system

Main article:Status effects#Buffs and debuffs

InFates, the key advantage of daggers is theirdebuff ability. When a dagger successfully hits, its target has temporary stat reductions applied after the battle ends; all daggers reduce thedefense andresistance stats, and most also reduce one or two further stats in addition to defense and resistance. These debuffs do not stack but can be combined with other debuff effects on different stats (if there is a conflict, the larger stat reduction takes priority). Debuffed stats recover by 1 point each turn until the stat is back to normal.

Engage poison system

Main article:Poison (status)

InEngage, the key advantage of knives is their ability to inflict thepoison status. When a knive successfully damages a unit (including viachain attack), it increases the damage the unit takes during combat, acting by directly increasing the opponent'sattack stat. Poison can be stacked up to three times, with each stack increasing the damage the afflicted unit takes: one stack makes them take +1 extra damage, two stacks make them take +3, and three stacks make them take +5. Additionally, poison does not wear off on its own, and can only be removed by using anAntitoxin or aRestore staff, or viaskills likeLifesphere andDetoxify.
