This page is about the weapon attribute. For the random increase in damage that this rate determines, seecritical hit.

Critical rate (also displayed as "Critical", "Crt", or "Crit") is a weapon attribute present throughout theFire Emblem series. It, in part, determines the likelihood of a unit landing acritical hit.

In most games, the minimum critical rate for a weapon is 0, though many weapons have higher rates; a series of weapons, most of which have "Killer" at the start of their names, are known for above-average critical rates, the most prominent being theKilling Edge. Additionally, certain weapons in select games, such as bronze weapons inFire Emblem: Radiant Dawn andFates, prevent their users from performing a critical hit at all.Fates,Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, andEngage also feature weapons with negative critical rates. These weapons inflict a penalty on the user's total critical rate, though the total critical rate cannot go below 0.

Critical rate can be loosely divided into two separate calculations: a unit'sbase critical rate, which is calculated first from the unit's stats and typically displayed on a unit's profile, weapons and other bonuses, and thebattle critical rate, the calculation used and displayed in actual battles which takes into account the opponent'sdodge.

Calculations

In all of its appearances, critical rate is solely used in the calculation of a unit's base critical hit rate; referred to here as weapon crit to avoid confusion.

If a unit or their weapon lacks the Critical skill, they are incapable of performing critical hits outside of combination bonuses, effective damage or Wrath.
+20% critical hit rate when the combination bonus is in effect.
If any bonus is not relevant, the bonus in question is taken to be 0.
A unit withWrath has their critical rate set to 100% when their HP ≤ (Max HP/2)+1.
A unit dealingeffective damage has their critical hit rate set to 100%.
Thracia 776(Skill) + (Weapon Crit) + (Support bonus)In battle, a unit's critical rate on follow-up attacks is affected by theirfollow-up critical multiplier.
Furthermore, the critical rate on the first attack is capped at 25. This does not affect the calculations for the critical rate of the follow-up attack.
Additional hits from Brave Weapons or Adept inherit their properties from the previous hit.
If any bonus is not relevant, the bonus in question is taken to be 0.
A unit withWrath has their critical rate set to 100% for their non-follow-up attacks when the foe attacks first.
The Binding Blade(Skill / 2) + (Weapon Crit) + (Support bonus) + (Class bonus)The class bonus is +30 if the unit is aSwordmaster orBerserker.
If any bonus is not relevant, the bonus in question is taken to be 0.
When using aLight Brand at indirect range, the critical rate is locked at 0.
The Blazing Blade(Skill / 2) + (Weapon Crit) + (Support bonus) + (Class bonus) + (S-Level bonus)The class bonus is +15 if the unit is aSwordmaster orBerserker.
The S-Level bonus is +5 if the unit has an S level in their currently equipped weapon.
If any bonus is not relevant, the bonus in question is taken to be 0.
When using aLight Brand orWind Sword at indirect range or aRunesword, the critical rate is locked at 0.
The Sacred Stones(Skill / 2) + (Weapon Crit) + (Support bonus) + (Class bonus) + (S-Level bonus)The class bonus is +15 if the unit is aSwordmaster,Berserker,Journeyman (3) orRecruit (3).
The S-Level bonus is +5 if the unit has an S level in their currently equipped weapon.

Battle critical rate

In all games, the minimum possible battle critical rate is 0%. In most games except forThe Binding Blade, the maximum possible battle critical rate is 100%. An attack cannot be a critical hit unless it hits, thus even if the critical rate is 100%, a unit will not always land a critical hit.

  • The weapons with the greatest raw crit in the entire series are theAshera Staff andMatrona inRadiant Dawn, both of which have 100 crit. The weapon with the next-highest crit is theGreat Club inFates, with 55 crit (45 points behind the two staves).
