Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (Japanese:Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. リンカーンVSエイリアンCode Name: S.T.E.A.M. Lincoln VS. Aliens) is a turn-based strategy game released in 2015 for theNintendo 3DS hand-held console. It was developed byIntelligent Systems, the principal developers of theFire Emblem series, but unlike it and its sister seriesWars, the game is controlled from the third-person perspective of the playable units and plays not unlike a third-person shooter, with the player using each unit's personal supply of steam power to either move the unit or have them attack the enemy aliens. The third-person perspective prevents the player from having an overhead view of everything happening on the map like inFire Emblem, instead forcing the player to strategize based only on what their units see happening around them.

The game is set in the year 1865, in an alternate,steampunk-themed reality where the technology of thesteam engine has led to a technological revolution and become a staple of life. When an alien species begins an assault on Earth, the President of the United States,Abraham Lincoln, commands a covert strike force known as S.T.E.A.M. to repel the aliens and defend Earth. The player controls agents of S.T.E.A.M., which is made up of a mix of real people and characters from North American literature, with the chief protagonist beingHenry Fleming. Through the use ofamiibo, characters fromFire Emblem can also be commanded.

Gameplay

Navigating the map during the player's turn.John Henry is the current active character and is readying his Bear Grenade weapon to bomb an alien, whileMarth andLion wait behind him.

The game is divided into chapters, which are themselves divided into multiple maps, and in each map the player commands an army of up to four characters and navigates them across the battlefield to defeat the aliens and reach the goal zone at the map's end. Secondary goals include collecting medals and gears scattered around the maps, which when enough are collected will unlock new sub-weapons and boilers for the player's characters to use as the game progresses.

The ability to perform actions revolves around a character's personal supply of steam power. Every character starts a map with a supply of steam and expends it to perform actions, with moving one tile costing one unit of steam while attacking involves multiple units, depending on the weapon used. Characters are capable of attacking as many times per turn as they want, as long as they can afford the steam cost, but the farther they move, the fewer times they will be allowed to attack. The steam supply can be replenished by picking up steam canisters or stopping at checkpoints as the character moves around. Characters are allowed to end their turn without using all of their steam, and if they have enough steam remaining to allow a weapon use, they can performoverwatch attacks, or counterattacks, during enemy phase if an enemy wanders into their sight.

All characters are assigned three pieces of equipment: amain weapon, asub-weapon, and aboiler. A unit's main weapon is their primary personal weapon which nobody else can use, while the sub-weapon is one of many which the player can assign to units as they please; in battle, these are toggled between at the flick of a switch on the console's touch screen. Boilers are back-worn devices which are the source of a unit's steam power, and each offers a different maximum steam capacity, rate of steam replenishment per turn, and boosts to offense, defense or mobility. Characters also possess two innate skills: a regularability which is in effect at all times, and a powerful one-offspecial which can only be used once per map.

Playable characters

In addition to the thirteen regular playable characters, fourFire Emblem characters can be used by connecting the game with their respectiveamiibo from theSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U amiibo series. TheFire Emblem characters operate by slightly different rules compared to the regular characters: they are unable to equip any boilers or sub-weapons other than the ones they come with, and if they are defeated, theycannot be revived at checkpoints and must be re-summoned after the battle by using their amiibo again.

Marth's two weapons areFalchion and aRapier, both of which are close-range weapons.

Marth's stats are as follows:

Marth
Max ♥130
Main weapon:FalchionBoiler: Marth's Cape
Pow60Rate1RangeEMax☁️12☁️ Rech.6Off.+0%Def.+0%
An heirloom whose power awakens in the right hands. Uses 2☁️.A cape of finest silk, suitable for a heroic warrior-king.
Sub-weapon:RapierAbility: DestinyOverwatch attacks cannot harm this character.
Pow10Rate5RangeE
A fine weapon for poking enemies in their weak points. Uses 2☁️.Special:LodestarHeal all nearby units of substantial damage!
LibraryMarth:This extraordinary young man claims to be a king and renowned swordsman from another world. The former claim is impossible to verify-the latter I will devoutly attest to.
Milton on Marth:Marth seems to have stepped directly from the pages of one of the Grimm brothers' household tales. While out of place in our modern world, his regalia is undeniably stylish. If only there were a place where similarly clothed people could convene and play in such costumes...

Ike

Main article:Ike

As inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U, Ike appears in this game in hisFire Emblem: Radiant DawnHero attire, and is once again voiced by Michihiko Hagi and Jason Adkins in Japanese and English respectively. His two weapons areRagnell andUrvan, the former allowing him to attack enemies over an impressive distance by throwing shockwaves, and the latter dealing heavy damage to multiple enemies and objects in close proximity to him.

Ike's stats are as follows:

Ike
Max ♥180
Main weapon:RagnellBoiler: Ike's Cloak

A blessed sword that strikes with tremendous force. Uses 4☁️.A rough cloak of uncouth materials, yet somehow all the nobler for it.
Sub-weapon:UrvanAbility: PushMove crates or enemies.
Pow70Rate1RangeE
The axe of a great warrior. Can swing into multiple foes. Uses 3☁️.Special:AetherTurn into a whirlwind of blades targeting all enemies to the front.
LibraryIke:Ike's manner is a little rough, but he is a formidable soldier who swings his greatsword and giant axe with ease. He seems to be made entirely of muscle and poor manners.
Milton on Ike:While Ike is not of high birth, he is noble in his character. His talents are those of a professional soldier, yet he is never eager to raise his blade. When asked, he simply replies that war has cost him dearly, and he hopes by his efforts to keep others from losing what he has lost.

Lucina

Main article:Lucina

Pow50Rate1RangeA
An ancient, powerful bow for banishing evil. Uses 2☁️. Also, string.Special:AwakeningDash through enemies in an all-out assault (empties Steam).
LibraryLucina:Lucina speaks of coming from the future but appears to come from some pseudo-medieval past. Whatever her origin, she is a woman driven to prevent some tragedy she believes is coming. She brings considerable martial skill to bear on her effort
Milton on Lucina:Lucina's talk of a dark future that she has traveled from seems preposterous...but still gives me chills as if someone had walked on my grave. Come to think of it, if she is from the future, she may well have done so at some point...

Robin

Main article:Robin

As inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andWii U, Robin appears in this game in his maleTactician attire fromFire Emblem Awakening, and is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya and David Vincent in Japanese and English respectively. His two weapons are theLevin Sword andTome, the former allowing him to strike enemies with lightning at medium range, the latter allowing him to launch fireballs at a great distance.

Robin's stats are as follows:

Robin
Max ♥150
Main weapon:Levin SwordBoiler: Robin's Robe
Pow30Rate1RangeDMax☁️13☁️ Rech.7Off.+0%Def.+0%
Unusual sword whose shape hints at the power within. Uses 2☁️.A robe of mysterious origin and purpose, of a unisex style.
Sub-weapon:TomeAbility: TacticianImproves team's critical attacks.
Pow50Rate1RangeS
A book of explosive, steam-powered magic spells. Uses 3☁️.Special:ThoronA stroke of lightning that pierces through all foes.
LibraryRobin:This young tactician has an aura of mystery, though, to be fair, everyone looks more mysterious in a robe. Robin's strategic acumen is matched only by a (unique?) ability to use a book to conjure fire and lightning. We are blessed to have such a soldier.
Milton on Robin:Even among all the extraordinary members of S.T.E.A.M., having an actual sorcerer aboard feels uncanny and off-putting. Intriguingly, Robin firmly rejects this title, saying something about the wrong "class". Somehow I don't think we're using the word in the same way...
