Claude von Riegan (pronounced /'klɔd vɑn 'ɹigən/[key]; Japanese:クロード=フォン=リーガンClaude von Regan), real nameKhalid (Japanese:カリードKhalid),[2] is one of the three main characters, alongsideDimitri andEdelgard,[3] appearing inFire Emblem: Three Houses. He is the heir of the noble family that leads the Leicester Alliance and the leader of the Golden Deer house at the Officers Academy.
Biography
Khalid was born the son of the king ofAlmyra and a noble fromLeicester. As a child, he often found himself discriminated against due to hisFódlan heritage. Khalid eventually left Almyra for Leicester and took up the pseudonym Claude von Riegan, but was again discriminated against due to his Almyran heritage. This led him to develop a desire to end Fódlan's long-standing isolationism in an effort to bring about a new world where everyone accepts everyone else. He was named heir to House Riegan in Imperial Year 1179 and enrolled at theOfficers Academy atGarreg Mach Monastery the following year along with several people from his kingdom. During a training exercise with PrincessEdelgard von Hresvelg ofAdrestia and PrinceDimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd ofFaerghus, he was attacked by bandits hired by an individual calling themselves theFlame Emperor, but was rescued by the mercenariesByleth andJeralt. Byleth was offered a teaching position at the Academy as a reward, and their choice of which house to lead would have far-reaching consequences for all of Fódlan.
In all routes, Claude spends the next year studying at the Officers Academy along with theGolden Deer. Eventually, the Flame Emperor is unmasked as Edelgard, and she assumes the Adrestian throne and declares war on theChurch of Seiros in order to destroy the Crest system she believes is stagnating the world. Edelgard launches a full-scale invasion of Garreg Mach Monastery and Claude fights alongside the Church, but the monastery is overrun and Byleth goes missing. Afterwards, Claude returns to Leicester and officially becomes the leader of the Alliance, using his political acumen to maintain a veneer of neutrality and keep the Empire at bay.
Crimson Flower
If Byleth chooses to lead theBlack Eagles and defects to Edelgard's side upon learning that she is the Flame Emperor, their return decisively tips the scale of the war in Adrestia's favor. Claude draws them to the Alliance capital of Derdriu intending to either kill Edelgard and win the war on the spot or remove Leicester from the conflict with a minimal amount of Alliance casualties. He is defeated, and may be executed or spared at the player's discretion. If spared, he wishes Edelgard luck before exiling himself in order to prevent the Alliance from continuing a pointless struggle in his name.
Silver Snow
If Byleth chooses to lead the Black Eagles and then chooses to stay with Rhea and the church and go against Edelgard, they will lead a resistance army to stop the Empire and rescue Rhea. Once the army receives troops from Judith at the Valley of Torment, she gives Byleth a letter from Claude. In the letter, he states that he "doesn't know exactly why, but he feels that he can trust them". He tells Byleth that in order to invade the Empire, they must go east and take the Great Bridge of Myrddin, with him distracting House Gloucester's troops so that the resistance army can pass through their territory along the way. By taking the bridge, House Gloucester won't be able to receive the Empire's aid, benefiting Claude's position in the war as well as giving the resistance army a foothold to invade the Empire. After the resistance army takes the bridge, the Alliance engages in a three-way battle with the Empire and the Kingdom at Gronder Field, resulting in massive casualties for the Alliance as well as Claude going missing. Some of the students believe that he is alive somewhere, and it can be deduced from the Verdant Wind route that the somewhere in question would be Almyra.
Azure Moon
If Byleth chooses to lead theBlue Lions, Claude grants them and Dimitri permission to move through Alliance territory in order to engage the Empire. Claude leads Alliance forces to Gronder Field to battle the Empire himself, and a misunderstanding draws him into a fight with the Kingdom as well; Dimitri emerges victorious, and Claude is forced to retreat. As Dimitri doubles back to retake the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad, Adrestian forces under the command ofLord Arundel invade the Alliance. Claude lures them to Derdriu to make a last stand and sends a request to Dimitri petitioning for reinforcements. His faith in Dimitri is proven well-founded when Dimitri outflanks Arundel and crushes his forces in a pincer attack. Claude gives him his Heroes' RelicFailnaught and information about ArchbishopRhea's whereabouts, disbands the Alliance and places its territories under Dimitri's governance, and leaves to pursue his own goals.
Verdant Wind
If Byleth chooses to lead the Golden Deer, Claude and his classmates become their pupils. Claude accompanies Byleth directly throughout their time teaching at the Officers Academy. Five years after the fall of Garreg Mach, Byleth returns the day before the millennium festival and reunites with Claude and the rest of the former Golden Deer. The two begin a full-scale war against Adrestia, using Garreg Mach Monastery as a base of operations. After killing an Adrestian general namedRandolph tasked with retaking the monastery, Claude receives allies and supplies fromJudith, the Hero of Daphnel, and launches a counter-invasion of the Empire. At Gronder Field, he engages both the Empire and the Kingdom in a three-way battle and emerges victorious; Dimitri is killed in the aftermath when he tries to pursue the fleeing Edelgard.
Claude presses forward into the Empire and takes Fort Merceus, but the fort is annihilated by "javelins of light" launched bythose who slither in the dark. He invades the Imperial capital of Enbarr and successfully kills Edelgard, ending the war. Afterwards, Edelgard's retainerHubert posthumously informs Claude of those who slither in the dark's intentions and the location of their base at Shambhala, an advanced underground city on the east coast of Fódlan on the border between Adrestia and Leicester. Claude besieges Shambhala and kills the leader of those who slither in the dark,Thales, but Thales manages to resurrect the ancient Liberation KingNemesis before dying. Nemesis raises an undead army and goes on a rampage towards Garreg Mach, but Claude and Byleth kill him and bring peace to Fódlan once and for all. In the aftermath, Claude leaves rulership of the newly formed United Kingdom of Fódlan to Byleth and returns to Almyra to become its king.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Claude is the leader of theGolden Deer house and among the best units in the game. In addition to having a good growth instrength, Clause possesses the second-highest growth inspeed, and the highest growths indexterity andcharm tied withLysithea andEdelgard respectively. In the early game, Claude has a base strength on par withRaphael though he will fail to double with abow until he obtains a few speed level ups; however, being one of four units to haveCurved Shot from the moment he joins and a higher strength than the other three gives him an edge in the early game and allows him to function as a reliable ranged chip on higher difficulties. If kept on a bow-focused path, Claude will be proficient more so at locking down the enemy rather than consistently killing enemies in one round. Bows are somewhatheavy and will limit Claude'sAS, but he obtains the rare and very usefulcombat art ofEncloser and he has his excellent charm growth, which grants highhit rates when usinggambits and highavoid against enemy gambits, both of which are fair compensation. Moreover, since Claude can useswords in any class, you can give him one to take better advantage of his high speed growth and work towardsFinesse Blade to take advantage of his high dexterity. Bear in mind that although bows' lack of melee range on enemy phase has been more or less eliminated by the introduction of the lightweightMini Bow and the skillClose Counter, Claude has average to subaverage growths indefense andHP respectively which limit Claude's staying power on the frontlines.
Claude possesses a minorcrest of Riegan which grants him a 30% chance of restoring HP equal to 30% of damage dealt when using combat arts. This crest effect is not very good. While on paper it may seem to be a solution to Claude's somewhat lacking defenses, the effect cannot be relied on and can only activate on the player phase. Moreover, If you equip HP based skills on Claude likeDesperation,Vantage or Defiant skills, his crest effect can deactivate them and ruin your strategy for enemy phase. The other perk granted by the crest of Riegan is access to theFailnaught's exclusive combat art ofFallen Star. In addition to granting an extra tenmight and thirty to the Failnaught's hit rate, Claude gains the Fallen Star status which guarantees he will evade all attacks in the next round of combat after which he will be subject to ordinary hit calculations. The combat art does not, as many players erroneously think after reading the art's description, allow Claude to dodge all enemy attacks on the enemy phase of the next turn ‒ it only works for one round of combat; accordingly, the combat art is best utilized in situations where Claude will see limited combat in the next enemy phase such as when fighting againstmonsters or bosses.
Claude has an excellent speed stat but needs help in strength, therefore his best promotion pathway isFighter toBrigand, master the class forDeath Blow, afterwards a side promotion toArcher for 3-range combat and to attainHit +20 is recommended. As for the advanced tier, Claude will likely be best as aWyvern Rider for general combat prowess,Canto, and the excellent mobility of flying classes. Moreover, spending time as a Wyvern rider in Part I will build Claude's proficiency in flying and work towards attainingAlert Stance+ earlier in Part II. As a side note,Sniper is also a viable option to obtainHunter's Volley andEncloser earlier. When Part II begins, Claude will automatically attain his unique classes ofWyvern Master andBarbarossa which are variants of the Wyvern Rider andWyvern Lord respectively. Automatically gaining such strong classes is a big boon for Claude as Barbarossa is his best option for his final class. While Barbarossa gives slightly lower class modifiers to speed and strength for the sake of a higher dexterity mod, it also hasBowfaire as one of its class skills, improving Claude's performance with his weapon of choice, and givesWind God upon mastering the class, a powerful two to five range combat art. Moreover, Barbarossa has the typical advantages of flying classes in the game such as high movement, Canto, and the unrivaled ability to dodge tank thanks to Alert Stance+. Additionally, flying classes have great synergy with Claude's modified personal skill in Part II which grantsPass. The combination of the two give Claude the best movement in the game next to Edelgard's ability to chainRaging Storm.

Claude is agreeable and often cheerful. Although he comes across as the type not to think about things too much, in reality he possesses a keen insight.
Claude's heritage from Leicester and Almyra made him an outsider to both; this instilled in him the desire to remove such cultural barriers throughout the world. Claude hides his troubles behind superficial charm, and rarely drops the façade.
Claude is a shrewd strategist and capable politician, able to keep Leicester together and gain Almyran support during the war against Adrestia.

Endings
Claude, King of Unification (single ending)
Claude returned to his homeland of Almyra and assumed the role of a politically active prince. After inheriting the throne, he worked to improve relations with Fódlan. In addition to establishing new trade routes, he fostered trust by sending reinforcements into Fódlan to help quell revolts by the remnants of the Imperial loyalists. Under his guidance, the peoples of Fódlan and Almyra were finally able to set aside age-old prejudices, and over time, the fallacies of old were all but forgotten.
Byleth, Ruler of Dawn & Claude, King of Unification
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth sought to rebuild the war-torn towns and villages and to help guide the reformation of the Church of Seiros. After a few months of peace, remnants of the Imperial army joined with those who slither in the dark and marched upon the capital city of Derdriu. The new kingdom lacked the power to repel the invaders, but when defeat seemed imminent, a battle cry rang out from the east. Claude, the newly-crowned King of Almyra, led a mighty army that broke through the rebel forces with ease. This show of solidarity forever altered the course of history, heralding a new age of unity.
Claude, King of Unification & Petra, Queen of Brigid
Claude left Fódlan, entrusting its future to his friends. He intended to travel to his homeland of Almyra, but his love for Petra instead drew him west, to Brigid. He won her affection, and after receiving the blessing of her grandfather, the king of Brigid, the two were wed. Some years later, each inherited their respective thrones. As the monarchs of Brigid and Almyra, Petra and Claude fostered friendly diplomatic relations between the two regions and Fódlan.
Claude, King of Unification & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra with Annette, whom he intended to marry. He announced this fact to his father, the king of Almyra, who approved of Claude's growth and Annette's wisdom and resolved to entrust the monarchy to them. Once he became king, Claude established a school of sorcery with the intent to use it as a bridge between Almyra and Fódlan. Annette took on a role as headmaster, supporting Claude's dream by opening the doors to students from every corner of the world. Relations between Almyra and Fódlan improved drastically as a result.
Claude, King of Unification & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra with Ingrid, whom he intended to marry. He announced this fact to his father, the king of Almyra, who approved of Claude's strength and Ingrid's virtue and resolved to entrust the monarchy to them. Even after they ascended the throne, Claude and Ingrid argued frequently. But while the queen chasing the fleeing king through the palace was a common occurrence, the couple must have loved one another deeply, for they happily raised many children together.
Claude, King of Unification & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
Claude disappeared from Fódlan after the war, leaving the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz, to support the new United Kingdom of Fódlan in his stead. He proposed revolutionary policies to restore the war-torn region at a rapid rate. When the rebuilding effort was complete, Lorenz turned his eye toward diplomacy, seeking to establish treaties of friendship with foreign nations. Almyra was no exception, and when the two parties met for a summit at Fódlan's Locket, it was none other than Claude, the new king of Almyra, who arrived to negotiate. Some speculated that this meeting had been Claude's scheme all along, but Lorenz and Claude both denied it.
Claude, King of Unification & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. When he became king, he asked Lysithea to be his queen with a heart full of love, and with the hope of fostering friendly diplomatic relations with Fódlan. Due to her shortened lifespan, Lysithea declined. Claude, unable to abandon his love for her, gave up the throne to go on a quest for a means to save her. Years later, he appeared suddenly before her, claiming to have found a cure. With her trust and love to guide him, he whisked her away, across the sea. It is unknown where they went.
Claude, King of Unification & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open trade routes with Fódlan, and entered into negotiations with Margrave Edmund. During this time, he was reunited with Marianne, who had grown under her adoptive father's guidance into a wise and talented woman. She offered him her aid, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective nations, they fell deeply in love.
Claude, King of Unification & Hilda, Free Spirit
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to take his place as heir to the throne. His family saw that he had grown strong and allowed him to claim his birthright. When he became king several years later, he made the surprise announcement that he would make Hilda his queen. Having studied with her brother to prepare for this moment, Hilda demonstrated an uncanny talent for diplomacy, and greatly contributed to establishing friendly relations between Fódlan and Almyra. The presence of a Fódlan-born queen for two consecutive generations did much to alter Almyran values.
Claude, King of Unification & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie returned to Sauin Village to repay her debts and mysteriously vanished afterwards. Some years later, when trade between Fódlan and Almyra began in earnest, the village received notice that the Almyran king would be passing through on his way to Garreg Mach. The village rushed to prepare themselves. When the anticipated day arrived, they were shocked to find Leonie at the king's side. She had gone to visit Claude in Almyra, and had ended up staying to become his queen. Faced with the sight of Leonie in the resplendent clothing of a monarch, her father and the other villagers could do nothing but stand in mute amazement.
Claude, King of Unification & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan, and asked Garreg Mach for aid. During this time, he was reunited with Flayn, who had been helping Seteth run the church. She agreed to help, and as they worked together to secure friendly relations between their respective regions, they fell deeply in love. It is said that Seteth never learned of their relationship.
Claude, King of Unification & Flayn, Slumbering Princess (Seteth died)
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to reclaim his place as heir to the throne. Several years later, when he became king, he took initial steps to open diplomatic relations with Fódlan, and asked Garreg Mach for aid. Alongside him was his wife, Flayn, who had gone missing during the war, but who now worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between their two lands for the sake of the late Seteth. It is said that some churchgoers disapproved of this new stance toward Almyra at first, but that Flayn's love for Claude proved to be a key inspiration in shifting the perspectives of the populace.
Claude, King of Unification & Shamir, Distant Archer
After the war, Claude returned home to Almyra and took his place in the royal family. Some years later he became king, and during his reign, promoted policies to improve relations with Fódlan and protect children who had been orphaned by the war. After he achieved his goals, he left the throne to a family member and left Almyra. During his travels, he encountered Shamir, who had been wandering the world as a mercenary. It is known that they traveled together from that day forward, but where they journeyed to remains a mystery.
Claude, King of Unification & Balthus, King of Grappling
Perhaps unexpectedly, Balthus accompanied Claude upon his return to his homeland of Almyra. While Claude assumed the role of a politically active prince, Balthus spent his days drinking, flirting, and brawling. As soon as Claude inherited the throne, however, all that changed. In the blink of an eye, Balthus became son-in-law to the great commander, Nader, and took up a position of military command in service to Claude's stated goal to improve relations with Fódlan. To foster trust, Claude frequently sent Balthus into Fódlan on missions to help quell revolts begun by Imperial loyalists.
