Clarine (Japanese:クラリーネClarine) is a playable character inFire Emblem: The Binding Blade who first appears inChapter 4. A quite spoiled and snobbishtroubadour, Clarine is the daughter ofPent and the younger sister ofKlein ofEtruria.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Clarine is the second child ofPent andLouise, the counts of Reglay. As most ladies of Etruria, she has lived secluded and surrounded by all kinds of luxuries. However, previous to the games' events, she left the family mansion to visit her brother, Klein, who is the current Archery General of their country and whom she greatly admires.
While searching inLycia, she is captured byErik, the marquess ofLaus, who claims to be able of reuniting her with Klein. His real motive, though, is to offer her as a gift toNarcian, one of the Wyvern Generals ofBern. When presented to Narcian, she mocks him, barely keeping her life thanks to the unexpected invasion ofRoy's army. Erik locks her up, so that Narcian can use her later, butRutger, a mercenary hired by Erik, sets her free and makes her leave the castle amidst the confusion.
Suddenly, Clarine finds herself in the middle of a battle and decides to join Roy's side to stay out of danger. When Rutger appears on the battlefield, she rides towards him and angrily berates him for not treating royalty correctly; her remark about fighting against Bern makes him to defect to Roy's side as well. After the battle, she remains in the army for the rest of the war.
Some time after, when theLycian Army is fighting bandits in theWestern Isles, she finally meets her brother and convinces him to not attack the Lycian Army and to join their cause, confessing how mortifying the Etrurian nobles' behavior towards the islands is.
After Bern is defeated and the war is over, she returns home and carries on with her normal life, gaining the admiration of her peers with her kindness and charm.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Clarine is the firstTroubadour you get inThe Binding Blade. Because of this, along with being your second healer, she is an invaluable unit in the early game. Thanks to her mount, she has high movement at base, particularly useful thanks to the large maps in the game. She also has a lowConstitution, which gives her a very highAid, allowing her to rescue most player units, and the ability to be rescued by most characters. Her low constitution might seem like a flaw after promotion, but anima magic inThe Binding Blade has such low weight that the only tomes she loses weight on areBolting and the trial-map exclusiveFimbulvetr. This is also without mentioning Clarine's high availability, and her being the only unit with both mounted and healing utility for a large part of the game. Her competition isSaul andElen, who both lack a mount.
However, she comes with fairly low bases in every area, besides luck, speed, and resistance, and has a mediocre magic growth and poor HP and defense growths. Because of this, Clarine mostly relies on dodging, as she can often be one-shot by physical attacks, and takes a lot of damage from magic-using enemies. Luckily, thanks to the low accuracy of most enemies inThe Binding Blade, Clarine can dodge consistently if given a few levels or a support partner,Klein andRutger being notable examples, but the player should not rely on her dodge-tanking much as she can get one shot easily, and with the low experience gain of staves she will often be underleveled.
Clarine comes with a low staff of D, which allows her to only useMend and the Heal staff at base, but this will improve if she is used; by the time she can be promoted, she should have C-staves and another 28-31 out of 50 WEXP towards B-staves (Lv1 to Lv10 takes 81 casts ofHeal, before factoring in EXP from being attacked); this goes up another full rank with her promotion, leaving her very close to A-staves. Once she is promoted toValkyrie, she can deal chip damage with anima magic. However, she starts with an E rank of anima magic and she is not a good user of higher rank staves thanks to her aforementioned low magic.
Overall, Clarine is a solid unit that is invaluable in the early game and offers great utility throughout the game. However, she faces competition as the game goes on from other staff users with better magic, better staff ranks, or better combat.
Comparison with Cecilia
Once promoted, Clarine becomes the same class asCecilia. Statistically, Clarine has better speed and luck, while Cecilia has better magic and defensive stats. More importantly, Clarine starts with an E in anima, causing her to do a lot less damage than Cecilia, who can use stronger tomes. Clarine does have the staff rank advantage, notably an expected B-staves for Physic, but neither will have particularly high healing output anyways. Cecilia's greatest advantage however is that she does not need a Guiding Ring, and while Clarine can be used without needing a promotion, Cecilia will then be significantly better due to higher movement and the ability to attack.

Personality
Clarine is a self-centered and arrogant girl who is often rude to others, although she does have good intentions. She usually looks down on people due to their social status, and takes great pride in her Etrurian heritage, remarking thatLance is not as good as Etrurian knights are. She also seems to romanticize the concept of gentlemen and knighthood, asking either Lance or Rutger to take care of her at all costs,[4] and even authorizing the Pheraen cavalier to kiss her hand.[5]
Despite her mean appearance, Clarine does have a kind side, shown in her support conversations with Rutger andDorothy. She takes the timid archer under her protection and tries to make her a true lady, helping Dorothy with her self-esteem issues and becoming good friends in the process,[6] while with Rutger, she recognizes some of her mistakes with her treatment of the swordsman and apologizes to him. While growing up, she heard many stories aboutDieck, the mercenary who saved Klein's life. She is really happy to have met him at last, as she always considered him an important person.
She greatly admires her older brother, Klein, and strives to become a source of pride for him. Her need for his approval is so big that she is willing to do anything, even to mistreat others. Eventually, he calls her out on it, stating that she is still a child.[7]
Clarine takes great pride in her appearance; despite being in the middle of a war, she suggests Dorothy to wash her hair three times a day.[8] When reminiscing about her childhood with her brother, she mentions how one of her goals was to be the most elegant lady in Etruria. Yet, some time after joining Roy's army, she states that she does not want to go back to the mansion, even though she wants to see her parents.[9] According to her she would have to live a boring life. By then, she has grown up enough to desire a more interesting life than just decorating herself.[10] This shows that she has grown up as not just a snobbish girl but a quite introspective lady.
