Chulainn (pronounced /⁠ˈkʌlɪn⁠/^[key][1]; Japanese:ホリンHolyn) was anIsaachian nobleman and the son of the lord of Isaach's House Sofala, better known as a mercenary and gladiator travelling acrossJugdral. He allied withSigurd's army during the war withAgustria and beyond, until his presumed death in theBattle of Belhalla.

Biography

During theAgustrian war withSigurd's army, Chulainn was fighting in the Agustrian gladiatorial scene, having risen to the top rank of gladiators in the region. Upon being defeated in a match by a member of Sigurd's army, he joined Sigurd's army himself, finding inspiration in their pursuit of a cause other than money.

Chulainn is a playable character during the first generation of the game. He can recruited inChapter 2 by having any unit—barMidir andJamke—clear thearena. He is available up until the end ofChapter 5.

Analysis

As a unit

Chulainn is a reasonably fast and deadly sword fighter much in the same vein asAyra. He has access toFollow-Up through theSword Fighter class, and with his high speed he can usually attack twice. Often, he can even kill enemies with high defense whenLuna activates, but he may struggle to do so if it does not. He is also very adept at clearing thearena, where his higheravoid and Luna will give him the edge. This is fortunate for him, as like most foot units inGenealogy of the Holy War, Chulainn seriously struggles to stay close to the fight while mounted units ride ahead. As such, he loses out on gold and experience from map combat, but he can supplement himself with the arena. When playing forrankings, Chulainn is potentially good enough at clearing the arena that he can get all the desiredlevel ups just from there by making sure he has theParagon Ring whenever competing.

As a father

As a father, Chulainn is somewhat limited. He has Follow-Up as a class skill, so he will not pass it down to his children; similarly, Luna can only be inherited by Sword Fighters,Dancers, andThieves. Chulainn will pass down Minor OdHoly Blood, which boosts HP andskill, and raises his children's potential sword ranks by one level. When paired with Ayra, his Minor Od holy blood will stack with hers to giveLarcei andScáthach Major Od blood, drastically increasing their skill—and as such, their chances to activate Luna orAstra—and HP; additionally, Chulainn can pass down his swords to Scáthach. Besides Ayra, he can be a good match forBrigid, as he will pass down Luna to Patty and increase her base sword level to B, allowing her to wield theBrave Sword; while not generally seen as a combat unit, improvements to Patty's fighting ability can be very helpful if playing forrankings.Febail appreciates the skill boost from Minor Od blood (and also receives the highest HP growth in the game at 175%) but is otherwise mostly unaffected by this pairing. The only other child who can inherit swords from Chulainn isDiarmuid,Lachesis's son, but neither he norNanna can inherit Luna, and this pairing will leave both children withoutFollow-Up.

Personality

Chulainn considered the pursuit of money his primary motivation for his travels and work as a gladiator, but upon his encounter with Sigurd's army he came to consider it a hollow and meaningless endeavor compared to Sigurd's cause and the morale of his soldiers.^[2] Ever since they first met in their youth, he harbored a romantic interest in the Isaachian princessAyra, and was determined to defend her above all else.^[3] In this respect he was mindful of ensuring she was prepared in case he was no longer able to protect her.^[4]
