Calendar

Thecalendar is a mechanic inFire Emblem: Three Houses. It indicates the passing of the year, and is a part of the game's story progression. Divided into 12 months, it passes day-by-day, and certain events such as characters'birthdays or special holidays take place on certain calendar dates. Most of the events on the calendar happen automatically, and only important events require action from the player. In-universe, the calendar ofFódlan is known as the Imperial calendar.[1]
Mechanics
On any day on the calendar, certain events may occur. Most such events are pre-determined, but certain events may randomly occur on any week day depending on the player's actions and game progress.
Pre-determined events are marked on the calendar through an icon. The following table lists icons and their meaning:

| Rare Monster Sighting | Displayed when a rare monster battle is available. In rare monster battles, the player is put up against two enemy factions, one consisting of a human team and the other consisting of a strongmonster enemy. The monster enemy can drop a random rusted weapon, some of which can be forged into rare weapons such asMercurius orGradivus. | ||||
| Birthday | Displayed on a character's birthday. On a character's birthday, the player may choose to pay 200 G to gift that unit flowers and increasesupport between them andByleth. If the player has unlockedTea Parties, they are also given the option to invite that character for tea instead. | ||||
| Holiday | Denotes a holiday. | ||||
| Fishing Spot Event | Denotes an event at thefishing spot. During events, the chances of obtaining rare fish are increased. | ||||
| Greenhouse Event | Denotes an event at thegreenhouse. During events, the player will be able to harvest more crops than usual. | ||||
| Dining Hall Event | Denotes an event at theDining Hall. During a Dining Hall event, a certain meal is served at the Dining Hall that the player will not have to provide their own ingredients for, and certain units will receive increased bonuses from sharing a meal with Byleth. | ||||
| Choir Event | Denotes a choir festival. Participating in choir practice during a choir festival increases the amount offaith andauthority experience gained. | ||||
| Lesson | Denotes a lesson. | ||||

| Mission | Denotes a chapter's final mission. This mission's completion is required to advance to the next chapter. | ||||
- Additionally, certain story events occur on pre-determined days. They are not marked on the calendar.
In addition to pre-determined events, support conversations may randomly occur on any week day if the player has obtained the required amount of support points. Only support conversations involving Byleth can occur in this way. Additionally, if Byleth has obtained support level B or higher with a student who is not a part of their house, that unit may randomly ask to join Byleth's class on any week day.
Lesson

Lesson
Lessons occur at the start of most in-game weeks. During lessons, the player may grantskill experience to any of their non-Byleth units and assign goals and group tasks. At the end of the week, the player's units gain additional skill experience based on their units' goals in addition to the rewards for participating in group tasks.
Free Day
At the end of most in-game weeks, Byleth will have a free day that they can spend at the player's discretion. There are four different options the player may choose between:
- Explore
- Fight
- Seminar
- Rest
During certain months, the player is forced to choose theExplore option during the first week. Additionally, during the first two chapters, the only certain options are available to the player as a part of the game's tutorial.
Explore
- Main article:
Garreg Mach Monastery#Exploring
Choosing theExplore option allows the player to freely roam the monastery. While exploring, the player has a limited amount of activity points that determines how many different actions they can perform during a single exploration session. Exploring the monastery also allows the player to use the different facilities of the monastery.
Fight
Choosing theFight option allows the player to participate inauxiliary battles to gainexperience, gold, oritems. If anyparalogues or rare monster sightings are available, they can also be accessed by choosing this option. The player may only participate in a certain amount of battles per free day, determined by theirBattle Points which scale with theirprofessor level. Auxiliary battles that don't consume any battle points are available exclusively onNormal mode.
Seminar
- Main article:
Garreg Mach Monastery#Seminars and Faculty Training
Choosing theSeminar option allows the player to choose a seminar. During Part I, only professors and knights can be selected as the host. During Part II, any recruited unit may be selected as the host with the exception ofBernadetta whose seminar is only available on the Crimson Flower route. After the player has selected a seminar,Byleth and up to five of their students whose study goals are similar to the seminar's goals participate in the seminar and gain skill experience in the corresponding areas.
Rest
Choosing theRest option will skip the free day. In exchange, theSword of the Creator'sdurability will be replenished by 5 points and all allies'motivation will be restored by 1.
Holidays
On holidays, one of two possible events will occur: Either the player can participate in choir practice, or they can share a meal at the dining hall. In both cases, the player will not be able to choose which units they will participate in the event with, but they will gain the same rewards that they would have gained if they had chosen the same activities during an exploration session.
Holidays related to the church are celebrated through choir practice, while holidays related to the three nations of Fódlan are celebrated through meals at the dining hall. Additionally, all non-church holidays are only celebrated during Part I. Church holidays are celebrated in both parts of the game, including the Crimson Flower route.
The White Heron Cup marks an exception, as it is a unique event that does not consist of choir practice or sharing a meal. Instead, it consists of a dance competition that allows one of the player's units to gain access to theDancer class.

History
Prior to the Imperial calendar's establishment, the people ofFódlan used a different calendar that began with the equivalent of the Guardian Moon and ended with the equivalent of the Ethereal Moon. The months had different names that were often abbreviated to simple numbers, but the names of the old months were lost. During Emperor Wilhelm's regime, it was replaced with the current calendar. The reason for the change is speculated in-universe to be to help to legitimize the church.[2]
Trivia
- Due to aglitch, it is possible to skip to unintended days on the calendar by holding a direction on the left control stick or D-pad at the right time when skipping a month. In months where the final mission is not on the month's final day, doing so allows the player to participate in otherwise unaccessible events such asFerdinand's birthday duringChapter 1. If the player reaches a month's final day without finishing the mission, the month will repeat, allowing for infinite resources.
