| “ | ...Sire, I...I cannot bear this! Failing to protect His Majesty...then leaving my brothers to die, slinking away like some coward... This indignity is too much to bear! One day I will repay them in kind. I will avenge the fallen... I swear it! | ” | — Cain, toMarth |
---
Cain (Japanese:カインKain) is an Alteancavalier in theFire Emblem series. He was present whenGra launched its surprise attack on KingCornelius's forces and returned to Altea to inform PrinceMarth of his father's death and deliver his dying words. He is friends with fellow cavalierAbel.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Cain is one of the Altean soldiers who fled to Talys alongside PrinceMarth after their country was defeated by Dolhr and Gra. Some years later, Talys is attacked and its princess goes to Marth for help; Cain, following his lord's orders, enters the battlefield with his fellow soldiers. Once they have rescued the king of Talys and Marth starts his campaign against Dolhr, Cain follows Marth for the rest of the war.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Cain joins in Chapter 1 with solid stats all around except for his mediocre speed and weapon level. After a couple levels, Cain's high growths everywhere except strength and defense will kick in, allowing him to rapidly outpace Jagen by consistently doubling enemies while being able to use strong weapons. He maintains these high stats for the rest of the game, apart from defense and possibly strength. Cain also has high mobility due to being a cavalier. He is a great candidate for the Paladin's Honor obtained in Chapter 12, due to his statistical superiority to the game's other cavaliers.
Overall, Cain is a great unit that only needs a couple of levels to start snowballing through the game.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem

Role
Cain's role is identical to his role inShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, being one of Marth's retainers. He is available for the entirety of Book 1.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Cain performs similarly to his original incarnation inShadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, but he takes more investment due to requiring more of an attack speed difference for doubling. Ultimately he is still one of the better units in the game due to his great stats when trained.
Book 2
Role
Cain is put in charge of protecting Altea while Marth led the Altean army in subduing the rebellion in Grust. After Marth turns against Archanea and fled toChiasmir Bridge, Cain approached Marth. Relieved that Marth was safe, Cain explained that he had broken through Archanea's forces to reach Marth, and that emperor Hardin was invulnerable to their attacks. He recommended that Marth flee to the north-western fort and escape by ship to the Khadein desert, which Marth reluctantly agreed to. Cain continued to serve in Marth's army for the rest of the war.

Analysis

Cain joins 1 level away from promotion right before the mount-hostile midgame. His stats after a promotion are generally better than Sirius's, except a lower weapon level. He will have issues for many of the following chapters, which are either indoors or dense in prohibitive terrain, though afterchapter 14 he will be able to use his full movement.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
Cain is originally sent to the battlefield alongsideKing Cornelius, but theAltean army is betrayed byGra, and Cornelius is killed, breathing his dying words to Cain. Cain then limps back to Altea with severe wounds and encountersMarth,Abel,Frey, andJagen. Although Marth wants to give Cain immediate medical attention, Jagen refuses until the group has escaped from the castle. Cain then gives Marth his father's dying words and accompanies him for the rest of his quest (unless he is chosen to be the decoy in Prologue IV).

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Cain has perfect availability, being around even in the Prologue ofShadow Dragon. His bases are decent enough for him to be useful early on, and he is capable of staying relevant throughout the game thanks to decent growths. His base class, Cavalier, has access to both swords and lances, making Cain flexible during the early chapters, before reclassing is an option. It also gives him higher movement than most other units the player has access to at that point of the game.
However, Cain's base weapon ranks are D in swords and E in lances, and this is a problem. Having a higher sword rank in this game is not nearly as good as having a higher lance rank, because most enemies past the first few chapters use lances and there are few good effective swords Cain can potentially use. Cain will consistently suffer from weapon triangle disadvantage if he uses his preferred weapon type in swords. It is not easy to fix this problem quickly, either, because the early chapters are flooded with axe users. Abel has a much easier time getting from D to C, because he can use Javelins at base and 50 weapon exp is easier to obtain than 100 weapon exp. The best way to mitigate his problems is to play the first few chapters patiently and cautiously, using Cain with an Iron Lance as the primary melee tank, pulling one enemy at a time, and healing him whenever necessary. This allows him to grind up his lance rank early on with minimal risk, as he doesn't start consistently risking being doubled by enemy Cavaliers until Chapter 6. Done this way, he can easily reach D lances and begin catching up to Abel.
Overall, Cain is a solid unit. While his weapon ranks are not very good because of the dominant enemy weapon types, he is helpful in the early game at least and is definitely better than units like Gordin, who lack long-term usefulness and prospects, and if the player is willing to work through his rough start they are rewarded with one of the best combat units in the game. Cain has good enough bases, growths, and flexibility to remain a worthwhile unit throughout the game. Abel and Hardin are definitely a cut above him, but you can always use all three.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.
Cain is the boss ofPrologue 7 if the player has chosen "yes" for the dialogue option in the previous chapter and is recruited at the start ofPrologue 8. Playing Cain's version of the map is generally preferred overEst's version, as while Cain is a more difficult boss to take down he is much more useful in the final map of the prologue. Cain will be among the most durable units in the prologue, while having enough base speed to avoid getting doubled by all the enemies, including the silver and steel sword thieves and can also avoid getting doubled by reinforcement thieves and theLevin Sword thief if they don't roll up on speed. Cain also sports 6 personal strength and a +1 to damage while using swords, making him one of the best damage dealers in the prologue.
Cain, unfortunately isn't as good once he rejoins inChapter 8. His personal speed of 4 holds him back from reaching the threshold necessary to double enemies, despite his high speed growth. Along with that, while his personal strength base is quite decent, his personal strength growth is only 25% meaning that he will often be lacking in damage. Along with that, by the time he rejoins in Chapter 8, he faces serious competition from other strong earlygame units that join earlier, likeCatria,Palla, andSirius. Cain does luckily join at level 9 meaning that with a bit of investment he can gain one level and early promote. With an early promotion, Cain gets access to more powerful classes. The most notable areSniper for higher speed and C rank bows, where with theScorpio shard and aRainbow Tonic, he is able to doubleChapter 9 Mages, gets access to flight in theDracoknight and can make use of his high weapon rank in swords in theSwordmaster classline.
However,Master Seals are a limited resource, especially in the earlygame with multiple playable units competing with them and after an early promotion Cain will fall off long term as he will struggle to reach the necessary stat thresholds to deal with the strong enemies in the the lategame ofNew Mystery. Overall, Cain is useful in the prologue and can be a serviceable filler unit with some investment during the midgame, but struggles due to the many strong units available in the earlygame that directly compete with him.

In the second episode, he and Abel disguise themselves to ambush pirates when enteringGalder. Later, in the night, they watchGordin andDraug arguing about Gordin's aiming. Finally, Cain and Abel help Marth getting rid of theSoothsire archers that were ambushing the Altean Knights in an attempt to help Marth rescueLena.
