Brigid (pronounced /ˈbɹɪd͡ʒɪd/[key]; Japanese:ブリギットBrigitte) is a archipelago located between southwestFódlan andDagda. It is ruled byPetra's grandfather during the events ofFire Emblem: Three Houses. The archipelago is often heralded as "the perfect union of the gentle sea and nature's bounty".[1]

Geography

Brigid bordersDagda in the west and theAdrestian Empire in the east. Its climate is described as noticeably warmer than that of Fódlan,[2] and its nature is described as "abundant". The people of Brigid are described as excellent hunters and fishers.[3]

History

While not much is known about Brigid's past, it has been recorded the lands have often been contested by the nations of theAdrestian Empire andDagda for many years. In Imperial Year 728, the Empire invaded Brigid which, at the time, was allied with Dagda. The people of Brigid refused to surrender, which led to their nation being subjugated by the Empire once they successfully took over.[4] From there, Adrestia attempted to use their newly acquired foothold to invade Dagda as well, which in the long term proved to be unsuccessful.[5]

In 1175, the Dagda and Brigid War occurred, an event in which both nations joined forces in an attempt to invade the Adrestian Empire, managing to cause considerable damage by destroying House Ochs and House Nuvelle, which occupy the land's shores.[6] Before they could reachEnbarr, they were countered at a port town.[7] During the war,Count Bergliez killed the leader of the Brigid forces.[8] As a result, Brigid was turned into a vassal state of the Empire, andPetra, the king's daughter, was sent to the Empire as a symbol of Brigid's vassalage while her grandfather ruled the nation in her stead.[9]

Petra was later sent to study inGarreg Mach Monastery in 1180, joining theBlack Eagles house, studying and fighting alongside many future heirs of Adrestia's noble houses.

Three Houses

WhenEdelgard von Hresvelg declares war on theChurch of Seiros in 1181, Brigid is put into a delicate political situation as the new Adrestian Emperor desires Brigid remains an ally of the Empire.

If Petra is inByleth's party, the future heir of the nation returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war regardless of their chosen side; ifBernadetta is on Byleth's team as well, the player gains access to the paralogueForeign Land and Sky in Imperial Year 1185, where they and Byleth's army travel to Brigid and defend the land from invading forces, either from the Church of Seiros (Crimson Flower route) or from the Adrestian Empire (non-Crimson Flower routes). Once the war is over, Petra becomes the new queen of Brigid and renegotiates her archipelago's situation with Byleth's chosen faction, giving Brigid back its independence.

Should Petra not be recruited on the Blue Lions and Golden Deer routes, she joins the Adrestian Empire and supports them in the war. It is unknown what happens to the nation should Petra be slain in battle.

Warriors: Three Hopes

When the Officer's Academy is closed, Petra returns to Brigid and succeeds her grandfather as queen of Brigid.[10] When the Adrestian Empire declares war on the Church of Seiros two years later, she joins the war on the empire's side. On the Scarlet Blaze route, she remains loyal to the empire in the hopes of renegotiating Brigid's relationship with the empire.[11] On the Azure Gleam and Golden Wildfire routes, Petra can be convinced to join the respective army's cause, which Edelgard notes will require the empire to reconsider its stance toward Brigid.[12] However, the empire never takes direct action against Brigid.

Culture

The people of Brigid worship spirits they ascribe the various forces of nature to. WhenByleth receives Sothis's power, Petra explains that Brigid has legends according to which people have spirits living inside of them. These people are described to have supernatural powers as well as shining hair and glowing eyes.[13] According to Petra, Brigid's dances are very different depending on the dancer; she ascribes the differences to the different music.[14] She also claims that assassination attempts are common in Brigid, and that she herself has been the target of one in the past.[15]

Hubert:It is unfortunate, but while you were called our guest, you were actually a hostage. You were meant to be insurance that Brigid would not restore its alliance with Dagda and attack us. The Empire required leverage, and after all, you are the princess of Brigid.
