TheBrigand (Japanese:山賊Mountainthief) is a class ofaxe-wielding fighters who travel on foot. They first appear inFire Emblem Gaiden as an enemy-only class internally usingswords, as axes do not exist inGaiden.

The Brigand is traditionally an enemy-only class, with the exceptions beingFire Emblem: Thracia 776, in which playable characterMarty is a brigand;Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, in whichGonzalez is a brigand; andFire Emblem: Three Houses, where the Brigand is a standard promotion option for all playable units. In most games, they can cross mountains.

Brigands generally have low stats in all categories, but above average HP and strength. As enemies, they are not at all difficult to defeat. However, playable brigands often have better stats than those of enemies. Their ability to cross mountains can be useful.

InThracia 776, brigands can change class to theWarrior class. InThe Binding Blade, brigands becomeBerserkers. In the coding forThe Blazing Blade andThe Sacred Stones, Brigands still promote to Berserker, but this can only be seen via hacking the game.

Similar criminal axe classes arePirate,Bandit, andBarbarian.
