| “ | Why do you challenge me? You are not worthy of being my foe. Flee while you are able. | ” | — The Black Knight, toIke |
|---|
TheBlack Knight (Japanese:漆黒の騎士Jet Black Knight) was the strongest of the Four Riders ofDaein during theMad King's War and the right-hand man to the Mad KingAshnard himself. He is an enigmatic warrior, never seen outside his blessed, pitch-black armor, and feared for his immense strength. His obsession with the former Daein generalGawain evolved into a bitter rivalry with Gawain's son,Ike, who swore to slay the Black Knight and avenge his father. Believed to have been killed by Ike in the war's last days, the Black Knight resurfaced three years later during Daein's struggle for independence from the Begnion garrison, as an ally of the Daein freedom fighterMicaiah.
Biography
The Mad King's right hand

Prior to the Mad King's War, the Black Knight was a member of theDaein military under the command of GeneralGawain of the Four Riders, who taught him swordplay. Years later, he entered Ashnard's employ under the guise of an anonymous warrior only known as the Black Knight. Despite revealing nothing about his identity, he easily won Ashnard's trust with his immense strength and became one of Ashnard's most trusted agents. As the Black Knight, he made use of numerous mysterious artifacts: he wielded theregalia swordAlondite, he wore a set of black armor, blessed by the goddess, which rendered him invicible to weapons which had not been similarly blessed, and he usedwarp powder to instantly transport himself. He also provided Ashnard with a second set of blessed armor as a gift.[1]
During his service, he eventually tracked Gawain—now calling himself "Greil" and leadinga mercenary troop—to the border forests ofGallia, where he and his mercenaries were fighting Daein forces to safely escortElincia to Gallia. By the time he arrived, Greil stood in the middle of a standoff between the Daein army, led byPetrine, and a Gallian army led byRanulf. The Black Knight convinced Petrine to retreat, then retreated himself.
That evening, the Black Knight found Greil in the forests near Gebel Castle, where Greil and his mercenaries had been lodging. The two fought a duel, where despite the Black Knight's insistence, Greil refused to wieldRagnell (offered to him by the Black Knight "so that I might see you at your full strength") and continued to wield his axe,Urvan. Greil recognised the Black Knight as his former student and remarked that the knight had no chance against "the man who taught [him] how to fight", but the duel was a brief one and ended with the Black Knight impaling Greil, right in front of Greil's son,Ike. The Black Knight demanded to be given Lehran's Medallion, threatening to kill Ike andMist if Greil would not comply, but was quickly forced to warp away by the sound of a roar fromCaineghis.
During the Mad King's War
The Black Knight later traveled to the port city of Toha to check on the progress of the Daein generalMackoya, who had come to subjugate the city ahead of schedule while following rumors about the journeys of Ike, the Greil Mercenaries, and their laguz allies after their attack on the Canteus Castle prison. At Mackoya's request, the Black Knight chose to stand aside and leave the task of apprehending Ike to Mackoya's soldiers, to give them a much-needed opportunity to fight.[2] After Mackoya's men failed to stop the Greil Mercenaries, the Black Knight emerged to fight them himself, but was too late to prevent them from leaving.Ranulf engaged him in a duel to prevent him from interfering with Ike's escape and was soon overwhelmed,[3] saved only by the arrival of Sephiran, who distracted the Black Knight while Ranulf escaped.
After this battle the Black Knight reported to Ashnard in Melior, who assigned him to lead an invasion of Gallia while they bided their time for another chance to take Elincia and the medallion. For this mission, the Black Knight was instructed to avoid provoking Gallia into sending their full forces against Daein just yet, likely in anticipation of ensuring Gallia had the strength to keep fighting in Ashnard's planned Tellius-wide war.[4]
Later in the war, after Ike won the support of Begnion's army and set out to attack Daein, the Black Knight passed this news and his low opinion of Ike's potential as a warrior on to Ashnard. He also informed Ashnard of the survival of twoherons, and Ashnard entrusted him with abducting one of them and ensuring that both the heron and the medallion enter Ashnard's possession.[5] Soon after the Crimean army's victory in Talrega, the Black Knight oversaw the delivery of the medallion toEna andPetrine at Daein Keep.
Moment of fate

As the war progressed, the Black Knight took a keener interest in Ike's growth as a warrior. He appeared at the battle of Castle Delbray to observe from a far, and was challenged to another duel by Ike. Ike failed to injure him at all because of his blessed armor, and the Black Knight instructed him to wield Ragnell the next time they fought so that they could have a proper fight.
Soon after, the Black Knight concocts a plan to abductLeanne, one of the two surviving herons, fromPhoenicis Castle for use by Ashnard. After carefully planning to ensure that KingTibarn was well away from Phoenicis,[6] he infiltrated the castle, ambushed and mortally woundedLotz, and stole Leanne away under threat of murdering her comatose father,Lorazieh. He then delivered Leanne to Ashnard, who had her imprisoned at Gritnea Tower in preparation for awakening the dark god through the use of galdrar. After Gallia and Phoenicis' armies joined the war on Crimea's side following the battle at Marhaut range, Ashnard ordered the Black Knight to divide up the Daein forces to defend both Fort Pinell and Nados Castle, and then inquired after Ashnard's order to have Ena killed. While Ashnard no longer cared about Ena's fate, so long as she did not interfere withhis dragon mount, the Black Knight chose to proceed with executing her.
While the Phoenicis and Gallian armies engaged Daein forces at Nados Castle, the Black Knight arrived at the scene of a battle and defeated an entire unit by himself, then left the defense of the castle to GeneralHafedd while he dealt with Ena. After promising to deliver an apology toNasir for her, the Black Knight struck her with a grievous but non-fatal blow, just as Ike arrived. Ike challenged him to single combat, wielding Ragnell, to avenge his father once and for all. Ike revealed as they fought that Greil had crippled himself, explaining the Black Knight's easy victory, which causes him to realize that Ike might someday equal Greil in strength and be a worthier opponent. In order to ensure that Ike reached his potential and that he someday had a worthy battle, the Black Knight let Ike win their duel.[7] Once the Black Knight fell, his soldiers triggered a trap built into Nados itself that caused it to collapse, and Ike fled the battlefield with Ena, Nasir, and Mist, leaving the Black Knight's body behind.
The Black Knight lives
The Black Knight was widely believed to have died to Ike at Nados, if not by Ike's hand, then by the rubble of Nados collapsing on top of him.Bastian, one of Elincia's retainers, ordered Nados's ruins to be searched the next day but they found no trace of the Black Knight in the castle at all.[8] This belief continued to be held for the following three years, until the last days of the Daein Liberation Army's war for independence from the Begnion garrison.
On the night that news came of Sephiran's investigation of the garrison's misdeeds,Micaiah, the army's leader, took leave of their camp to sit alone in a nearby wood, where she was ambushed byJarod. Before Jarod could kill her, the Black Knight warped in and shoved Jarod away. Though he did not explain how he knew of the attack to Micaiah, he and Micaiah took on Jarod's men in the dark and won. The Black Knight then attempted to finish off Jarod himself, but before he could, Jarod's aideAlder took the lethal blow on behalf of his master. At Micaiah's insistence the Black Knight let Jarod go to bury Alder, and Sothe soon arrived and instantly assumed the Black Knight to be a threat to Micaiah. While explaining the situation, Micaiah sensed an impending doom caused by her choice to spare Jarod, and despite Sothe's objections the Black Knight swore to protect and serve Micaiah no matter what.
The following day, Jarod retaliated with a defiant fire-bombing assault on Nevassa, and Micaiah led the Daein Liberation Army in a siege of Daein Keep to stop Jarod. The Black Knight assisted in this fight as well. Though he requested that Micaiah stay back to keep herself safe as the army's inspiration, she insisted that she would fight as everyone else did, reminding him of an unknown woman.[9] After the Liberation Army's recapture of Daein Keep, the Black Knight was present for KingPelleas's coronation, but he left Daein soon after.
News of the Black Knight's role in the restoration of Daein soon reached Crimea. Elincia passed this news onto Ike after the defeat ofLudveck.
Judgement

| “ | I knew it. I knew that even if the end of the world came, you'd be the last one left standing. | ” | — Sothe |
|---|
Ultimately, the warring across Tellius resulted in the goddess enacting her judgement and turning almost all beorc and laguz to stone.
As she traveled to Begnion through the Grann Desert, Micaiah and her Silver Army were attacked byLekain,Numida, and theDisciples of Order. The Black Knight warped into the middle of the battle to protect Micaiah, and after the battle, he offered to take her to the Tower of Guidance to save her from the judgement. Micaiah refused to abandon her allies, and the Black Knight left, saying that he would come to offer this again before the next judgement wave came and petrified her allies.[10]
The three armies soon arrived at the Tower of Guidance, and the Black Knight awaited them inside. For the first time, he removed his helmet in the presence of others, confirming his identity to them. While Levail and the Disciples of Order occupied Ike's allies behind a barrier, the Black Knight and Ike challenged each other to a final duel to the death, uninterrupted by the others: both had long been anticipating the chance to test each other again, to put an end to their rivalry once and for all, and to finally surpass the other as warriors.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
The Black Knight makes recurring appearances as an enemy throughout the game. He appears inChapter 11 on the next enemy phase after the player entersMackoya’s range, and again inChapter 24 at the end of turn 7 (Easy and Normal) or 5 (Difficult). In both of these appearances the player has no ways of damaging him and he can easily kill most units, so the goal is to finish the chapter as quickly as possible and to stay out of his range. His final appearance is as the boss of thesecond half of Chapter 27, whereIke duels him with onlyMist for help. The goal of the map is to defeat the Black Knight, but if Ike does not have the stats or skills to do it in time, he can simply retreat or survive for six turns to end the fight and continue with the game.
In all appearances, the Black Knight possesses blessed armor which nullifies all damage not inflicted by Ike'sRagnell,Giffca'sClaw,Tibarn andNaesala'sBeaks, andNasir andEna'sBreaths. The latter five units are not available at any point where the Black Knight appears, so Ike is the only unit able to fight him after receiving Ragnell in Chapter 27.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
The Black Knight is playable for brief periods of time in Micaiah-focused chapters. He first becomes playable inPart I, Chapter 9, as one of only two playable units in that map along with Micaiah herself, and continues to be playable in thePart I, Endgame. He leaves the party at the end of Part 1, but rejoins several turns intoPart III, Chapter 6. He is not playable again after that point, but reappears as a NPC inPart IV, Chapter 3. During his time as a playable unit, the Black Knight'sdeath is an automatic Game Over, although that is extremely unlikely to ever happen given how strong he is compared to the enemies of those chapters.
The Black Knight makes two appearances as an enemy unit. Along with the rest of Micaiah's army, he is present as an enemy inPart III, Chapter 7. While defeating him is not part of the chapter'sobjective, the task of having Ike engage him in battle once with both surviving is required for the chain of events which eventually lead to recruitingLehran. His final appearance is inthe second stage of the Part IV, Endgame, as the boss of that chapter. He and Ike are sequestered in the upper half of the map, and the Black Knight's defeat is the chapter's objective.
When he appears as an enemy, the Black Knight retains his stats and inventory from his last playable appearance, except in Endgame. While he is already at his maximum level, it is possible to use stat booster items on him to increase his stats and make him slightly more difficult to fight as an enemy. However,Alondite is locked to him while playable and cannot be removed from his inventory, and none of hisskills can be unequipped.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
The Black Knight is a temporary companion who joins the Daein army at the close of Part 1 and is playable for Part 1's final two chapters and Daein's first chapter in Part 3; his deployment is mandatory in Chapters 1-9 and 3-6, and required to recruit Lehran at the end of the game in Chapter 1-E. Befitting a literal endgame boss who is dropped into the player's party approximately a quarter of the way into the game, the Black Knight is monstrously powerful. He boasts stats far in excess of the enemies you are facing and an unbreakable 1-2 range personal weapon in Alondite. He also possesses the mastery skill Eclipse, which ignores Defense and multiplies his Strength to a degree guaranteed to be fatal to any unit in the game, even the final boss (if he was available for that fight). In Part 1, Jarod is the only enemy capable of even surviving the Black Knight's first strike, and is still doubled and eradicated without any trouble. The laguz in Chapter 3-6 fare little better, being doubled and one-rounded nearly to the last man. The only enemies the Black Knight encounters who are even theoretically capable of surviving direct combat with him are Mordecai and Lethe, the latter only if she has gained two points of Speed while under the player's control to avoid being doubled. Even better, only a trained Mordecai with two points of Strength or an S rank in Strike attacks can hope to even dent the Black Knight's 40 Defense, never mind actually being able to defeat him. The Black Knight's only flaw as a direct combat unit is his bottom of the barrel 6 movement, which can be circumvented by using Jill to ferry him around the map.
The obvious problem with the Black Knight is that due to his temporary playability, any kills he takes are wasted experience. This isn't much of an issue in Chapter 1-9 since he only competes with Micaiah for combat, who may be at or approaching her tier 1 level cap at this point, but in his other two chapters the Daein party is quite undertuned and starved for experience. Thus, using him becomes a balancing act of taking advantage of his power while he's around to get Micaiah's party through one of her hardest chapters while not overusing him to the point that the Daein party is left unprepared for the trials ahead. One good way to take advantage of the Black Knight without dooming the other party members is to unequip Alondite and use him as an invincible point man and meat shield, pulling in enemies so that the other characters can gang up on them.

Black Knight/Heroes
There are five different variations of the Black Knight available inHeroes; two of which feature him unmasked.
Personality
During the Mad King's War, the Black Knight appeared ruthless and cold-hearted. On the night that he killed Greil, he threatened to torture and kill Greil's children to get him to reveal the location of the medallion, and at the duel at Nados Castle, he threatened to kill Mist as well to destroy Greil's entire family.[11] Despite this, after the Mad King's War, he appeared to be more chivalrous, refusing to kill those who would not fight back.[12]
Described by Greil as willful and arrogant,[13] the Black Knight was highly confident in his own combat abilities and pursued worthy opponents among both his beorc and laguz foes. He was particularly intrigued by the idea of challenging Gallia's KingCaineghis, and viewed his fights with Ranulf as a way of sampling just how strong Caineghis really was.[3] This hunger for a good battle, and the idea of challenging Greil—and later, Ike—again someday, is what drove him through most of his life. In his view, fighting an unworthy foe was a waste of time.

| “ | Ike: I've found you at last. Black Knight: Hmph. You see me, and instead of fleeing, you come to face me. Interesting...and foolish. Ike: I will keep challenging you until I have avenged my father! Black Knight: There will be no next time. I will snuff the life from your breast here today. Ike: I will not lose! Ready yourself!! | ” | — The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Chapter 24 ofPath of Radiance. |
|---|
| “ | Black Knight: What an odd fate. This will be the third time I have defeated you. The first was in the forest of Gallia. The second at Delbray in Crimea. Ike: We've met twice, and I've lost twice. But the third time will be different. Black Knight: Oh? Ike: My sword-fighting skills were given to me by my father. If I stay true to them, I cannot lose. Black Knight: Did you never think that using your father's techniques on the man who killed him would be futile? Ike: My father robbed himself of using his stronger arm. If he had, he would not have lost to the likes of you. Black Knight: Hah... You think so? Let us test your stronger arm then. Come, son of Gawain... Show me your strength. | ” | — The Black Knight, when fighting Ike inChapter 27 part 2 ofPath of Radiance. |
|---|
| “ | Mist: ...Sniff...sniff... Black Knight: Do you tremble in fear, little daughter of Gawain? How... entertaining. But if you value your life, you will leave this place at once. Mist: You... you took my brother and my father! My sword may not even scratch you, but I don't care. This one blow... will contain... all my anger... and all my pain... Rrrraaaaa! I'll kill you! | ” | — The Black Knight, when fightingMist in Chapter 27 ofPath of Radiance. |
|---|
| “ | Jarod: I see you're pretty impressed with yourself! Black Knight: Did you think the likes of you could be a worthy opponent for me? Know your place. | ” | — The Black Knight, when fightingJarod inPart I, Chapter 9. |
|---|
| “ | Jarod: Well well well. Look what we have here. The loathsome phantom of old Daein... Why in blazes are you here? What inspired you to slooooowly clank your way up out of your grave? Black Knight: My purpose is not for you to know. Jarod: Oh. I feel so rejected. Must I crack that helm open and ask your ugly, naked face directly!? I have to take vengeance for Alder's death, after all! Black Knight: This is how you meet your death? Sad. Come at me then, and join your friend. | ” | — The Black Knight, when fighting Jarod inPart I, Endgame. |
|---|
| “ | Stand aside. You are no match for me. | ” | — The Black Knight, inPart III, Chapter 7 ofRadiant Dawn. |

When you told me that he had crippled himself, I realized that I had never fought him at all, merely his shadow. Ike: What are you getting at? Black Knight: I saw immediately that you were not your father's equal, but that one day you might be. So I did the only thing I could to keep you alive... I let you win. Ike: ...You did, didn't you? But I had to let you live, so that you could continue to train and perhaps one day be worthy of Gawain's legacy. My armor's blessing is gone, let us see if that day is today. Ike: I promise you that it will be. Begin. | ” | — The Black Knight, when fighting Ike in Part III, Chapter 7 ofRadiant Dawn. |
|---|
| “ | Ranulf: Oh, I thought I smelled you earlier. We just have to stop meeting like this. Black Knight: ... Ranulf: Back in Gallia, in Crimea... We just ran into each other recently, too. I don't know about the others, but I can tell who you are. You have one heck of a stench. Black Knight: ...Enough talk. Prepare yourself. Ranulf: Still won't own up, huh? Fine. If that's the case, I'll just tear your mask off and show everyone myself! | ” | — The Black Knight, when fightingRanulf in Part III, Chapter 7 ofRadiant Dawn. |

- ↑"Ashnard: You are an enigma, dark one. Everything you possess is fey and of unknown origin.
Black Knight: The armor I presented to you...Do you find it dissatisfactory?
Ashnard: No, it has my approval. My wyvern Rajaion, and this armor which renders any enemy attack impotent... Both are well suited to me. They both shine because they are mine! And now the medallion, and that galdr as well, both belong in my hands!" —Ashnard and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑"Mackoya: Now then, where is our special guest?
Black Knight: I'm right here, General Mackoya.
Mackoya: Oh! Sir Black Knight! I hope I didn't keep you waiting.
Black Knight: No, I just arrived. Let us proceed...I would hear your report.
Mackoya: There are no problems whatsoever. I've nothing to report, save the tedium of it all. The farther west we travel, the weaker the Crimean fighting spirit becomes. Each town displays less and less resistance--now they literally throw wide the gates at first sign of our approach! With duty as humdrum as this, I worry that my troops may become sloppy and lose their edge.
Black Knight: As a fellow warrior, I can sympathize with your plight.
Mackoya: I thank you for your understanding.
Black Knight: This town was not scheduled for subjugation until much later...Tell me, why are you here now?
Mackoya: Yes, as to that...Mere days ago, a castle that held Crimean prisoners of war was attacked and the captives freed. The perpetrators were Crimean soldiers accompanied by sub-humans. According to our intelligence reports, their trail led here...
Black Knight: I see.
Mackoya: The princess of Crimea is said to have fled to Gallia. If we can capture this band, we may gain information on her location.
Black Knight: Do you require my assistance?
Mackoya: I thank you for the generous offer. However, if you were to enter the fray, it would be over in a twinkling. My men are starved for combat. I would beg your restraint so that they may be allowed some...entertainment.
Black Knight: As you will. The field is yours. Turn your soldiers loose, and may their blades run red with glory.
Mackoya: Your graciousness is greatly appreciated." —Mackoya and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑3.03.1"Black Knight: ...The mercenaries boarded the ship safely. Now, how to proceed...
Ranulf: You're not impeding that ship. I won't allow it.
Black Knight: One of Gallia's beast warriors...I've met you once before. Yes...at the castle near the sea of trees.
Ranulf: From where I'm standing, we've actually met twice.
Black Knight: Oh?
Ranulf: I saw you that night...Standing in the light of the full moon. The night you murdered Sir Greil.
Black Knight: Ha ha! So you were the one traveling with the beast king, eh? Interesting. By measuring his aide's strength, I will naturally learn more of the king's true power.
Ranulf: Hate to tell you this, but my king is not to be measured against the likes of me. He is far beyond that.
Black Knight: All the better. Now then, let us begin." — The Black Knight andRanulf,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑"Ashnard: Our only concern is the princess of Crimea and the medallion. We must wait and watch until such time as we can strike.
Black Knight: ...
Ashnard: In the interim, I want you to take charge of the invasion of Gallia. Be smart. You must not allow Gallia to bring their full might to bear. Understood?
Black Knight: ...As you will." —Ashnard and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑"Ashnard: So they've left Begnion, have they?
Black Knight: According to our spy, they march with a regiment of Begnion's army. They plan to take a land route through Daein and then into Crimea.
Ashnard: Hah! They plan to cut across Daein? With nothing more than a single regiment at whose core is a tattered band of ragtag mercenaries? Gawain's son leads this rabble, yes? How does he stand up to his father's legacy?
Black Knight: He doesn't. He's just a boy, not yet worthy of his father's name.
Ashnard: Hmph. Disappointing.
Black Knight: Though his skill with the blade is rough, there is something...uncanny about him. People seem drawn to him. And not just Begnion's apostle, either. He's also gained the trust of the Serenes survivors...and of King Phoenicis as well.
Ashnard: The herons are alive?
Black Knight: It appears that two members of the royal family survived.
Ashnard: Heh heh... Look how nicely the table's been set for us. Bring one of them to me... I care not which one. And I want the medallion as well.
Black Knight: ...As you wish." —Ashnard and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑"Ashnard: For you, it did take quite a long time...Didn't it?
Black Knight: Diverting the sharp eyes of the hawk king proved to be quite difficult. It required much planning and care." —Ashnard and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - ↑"Ike: So, you are alive. Somehow, I knew it wasn't over yet.
Black Knight: Of course it wasn't over. You were a boy trying to live up to the memory of the greatest swordsman in history.
Ike: And yet, I was the one who walked out of the castle that day.
Black Knight: You have your father to thank for that.
I've relived that fight so many times... How could I not have seen it before?

Ike: I promise you that it will be. Begin." —Ike and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑"Ike: The Black Knight... The man who killed my father... But I defeated him three years ago. I'm sure of it. At the very least, he couldn't have escaped when Nados Castle came crashing down on him.
Elincia: The day after you fought, Bastian ordered some men to search the remains of Nados Castle. There was no trace of the Black Knight. No armor... No sword... No corpse. If the Black Knight that was seen in Daein was indeed the same Black Knight... He might prove to be a threat to Crimea." —Ike andElincia,Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑"Micaiah: That shout...that's Jarod! For Daein's sake, this time I swear I will put an end to him.
Black Knight: Maiden, take no risks upon yourself. You are the heart of this army, the soul that inspires us. We must not lose you. Leave this battle to me, and stay back.
Micaiah: Thank you for your concern, Sir Knight. But I am going to fight. You and everyone else are putting your lives on the line. I will not shirk my duty.
Black Knight: You...are much...like her.
Micaiah: What?
Black Knight: ...Nothing." —Micaiah and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑"Micaiah: Sir Knight! How good to see you! You always save me from danger.
Black Knight: Maiden. I have a favor to ask of you. Will you come with me? My master awaits you at the Tower of Guidance.
Micaiah: The Tower of Guidance? If I may ask...who is your master?
Black Knight: You will see when we get there. Please take my hand. We will be there in the blink of an eye.
Micaiah: ...I can't. I can't leave everyone behind. We have to get to the tower together.
Black Knight: Your allies will turn to stone when the light of judgment next shines. I do not wish for you to see it.
Micaiah: The light will strike again? When? Please tell me!
Black Knight: ...Maiden. I will come for you again. Make up your mind by then." —Micaiah and the Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - ↑"Gawain's daughter, eh? Good. Now I can pull out the entire family tree by the root." — The Black Knight,Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
