TheBishop (Japanese:司祭Bishop) is anadvanced magicalclass which debuted inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. Traditionally thepromoted class forPriests andClerics, they are primarily potent healers but also have access to one or more types of offensive magic, depending on the individual game: the broadertome category in theArchanea games, the three types ofanima magic in theJugdral games, andlight magic in theGame Boy Advance andTellius games; inThree Houses, Bishop has access to all magic, but itsabilities strongly benefitwhite magic in particular.
SinceThe Binding Blade, Bishops are defined primarily by their exceptionally highresistance, the strongest of their stats, while also possessing highmagic and goodskill andspeed. However, theirHP anddefense are lacking like most magical classes, rendering them frail and vulnerable to physical attacks.
In the majority of its appearances, the Bishop is the promoted form of Priests and Clerics. Originally inFire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light andMystery of the Emblem, the Bishop is also the promoted form of theMage, acting as the sole advanced magic class; in most later games, theSage replaced it as the Mage's promotion.The Blazing Blade andThe Sacred Stones have the offensively-orientedMonk also promote to Bishop. InRadiant Dawn, after promoting from Priests, Bishops can in turn class change to becomeSaints. The class is an enemy-only class with no class change association inGenealogy of the Holy War andThracia 776, where theHigh Priest instead acts as the promoted form of the Priest. The Bishop class is entirely absent inGaiden and its remakeEchoes: Shadows of Valentia,Awakening,Fates, andEngage.
